Water Conditioner & Bottled Nitrifying Bacteria: Why They're Important

- One of THE most common problems I hear from beginners in this hobby are ammonia spikes/ nitrite spikes, or they will tell me they have very cloudy water, which is typically due to elevated ammonia levels causing a bacterial bloom in the water column.
The most important thing to have handy when dealing with high ammonia/nitrite levels is a water conditioner that will render them temporarily non-toxic. This high ammonia or nitrite can immediately cause short-term damage, long-term damage, or death, so it is very important that you have on hand a conditioner that can you can use to save your fish in the meantime while you tackle the root problem. Conditioner is also very important for detoxifying tap water of course.
The second most important product to have on hand when dealing with high levels of these compounds is bottled beneficial bacteria. Chronic high ammonia levels can mean that you are overstocked or your tanks are under filtered, but random spikes in ammonia due to instability post large volume water change, instability post filter maintenance (a lot of beneficial bacteria can die when filters are shut off during filter maintenance), accidental over feedings, use of medication that kills beneficial bacteria, unknown sources of decaying matter...etc, can happen to even the most properly filtered and stocked tanks. For this reason, I also believe having extra beneficial bacteria on hand can be very helpful when trying to bring stability to the nitrogen cycle of a system after it's been thrown off.
Once again THANK YOU to Fritz Aquatics, check out their website, they have plenty of great products for fish keeping: fritzaquatics.com

Face so smooth...it's mesmerizing...😳
I have my own aquariums and these little videos full of tips are very helpful. Thank you! (How’s bubba and brad doing?)
Very happy your educating people! I do love their beneficial bacteria products. I can confirm they do work and help speed up process of cycling new tanks.
Pretty nice description about how necessary some special bacteria is
Fritz sponsor! Noice!!
Hate to say i found your channel on an accident on shorts but had i known when i had small goldfish they maybe wouldnt have died so thankyou
Amazing video!!!👍
We are going to need a video on how to properly reduce fish stress during water changes in large tanks (I have a 125 gal) in places where water is hard. Even conditioning the water prior to adding tap has caused me trouble (I think). Super difficult to change 40 gallons by mixing conditioner with water outside the tank
Without the beard idk. You're a whole different person
hi luke, i have a 40gallon breeder fish tank with 3 orandas. i lost 2 so now i only have one. my problem is the tank seem to get a lot cloudier than usual with the one fish and i just dont understand why. do you have any ideas? my tank was clear before with the 3. how can it look dirtier with just 1?
Hi Miss Margaret! Good info Luke. When you are new to the hobby unless you research this stuff you don't know about. I knew when I got my fish because I researched first.
Do you need to let the water sit for you put in a tank? Do you need different bacteria for fresh and salt water?

In high school I won some goldfish at the fair and I didnt have anything to keep them in. I put them in a mason jar and sat them in the window so they would get some sun. One died after a few days but the bigger one lived for several months. I would change the water every other day and I just use sink water. I pour him into my hand and then pour the water in and put him back. At first i used cold water but then I learned I had to use warm water and then that I could let the water sit for a day in a different jar.
I hope you hit 1m subs
Aw, I think Margaret is an intangible asset to the channel.
In the region where I live it's not easy to find bacteria to sell, I had to cycle my aquarium without and it really took long months until it was ready, even so I ended up ordering them online but it's really expensive and it hasn't arrived yet.
I another brand of water conditioners and bacteria (beneficial, boosters/sustainers), but I'm curious about this brand... Fritz, was it? I'll have to check it out.
thats enough water conditioner and beneficial bacteria to last eons
