    Explanation for the schooling behaviour:
    Fish can't see red light (since it is usually filtered out by the water (this is also the reason the sea is blue)), so when you only have red light, they can't see anything and think it's night time and school for safety.

    Red is the natural colour fish see at night. So they school for safety in numbers as they think it's nighttime

  • @marysoldeeley2218
    @marysoldeeley2218 7 лет назад +9

    To react like that, they must school at night to sleep. Most critters don't see red. They just think it's night :) That looks fantastic! Great work!

  • @StarWonder
    @StarWonder 6 лет назад +13

    For wild fish at least, probably the same for your babies, the red light making them all go to one side, it's a schooling and protection reaction. Red = night, and that's usually when predators come out. So they go into a tight ball for protection. During the day, there are fewer predators hunting them, they can see very clearly, and so on. In and around the wood they cannot school safely, it's easier for an individual to be picked off. This also can be a hunting technique as well, where they get together in a tighter formation. When a school of fish is also in a tight ball, they look MUCH bigger to predators, and can ward off the potential predator by becoming a mass that is too big to attempt to nibble. Any one of these behaviours, or even all, could be what your Rainbows are doing.

  • @NeverSeb
    @NeverSeb 5 лет назад +60

    By red light they hide. Because in nature the sunset means, that night is comming. And with the night the predetors are comming too.

    I think your red light may simulate sunset and the Raibows are swarming because that's what would happen in the wild, when the Sun goes down they swarm

  • @tysonsfishingandcamping5495
    @tysonsfishingandcamping5495 7 лет назад +7

    the reason they school in the red light is because it imitates night time. Most fish cannot see red light so its a way many people get to watch their fish act as if it were night.

    Lots of fish can't see red spectrum, hence responding in a similar way to no lights on. Best way to check for unwanted critters in a reef tank is to phase a red period into the night time cycle. Looks awesome dude

    • @alexmoody9259
      @alexmoody9259 7 лет назад

      Maybe something to do with the shorter wave length of the spectrum towards the red end.
      It's likely that red also can't penetrate very deeply in to water.

    Red light is the first to dissipate in water and a lot of fish don't see that color well, so it's possible they schooled with only the red light because it looks like the lights were killed entirely to them.

  • @derekschwendemann2468

    the fish school together like that because, although the light went red it also got significantly darker, so the fish feel threatened in lack of day-light and form a fish ball to protect themselves against potential predators.

  • @About46Pandas
    @About46Pandas 7 лет назад +8

    Red light has the largest wave length compared to other colours, so perhaps the fish can't see the red light? If so, they would assume it's dark, making them instinctively huddle in groups for protection.
    Sounds reasonable, but I don't know for sure. Anybody know how far up the visible light spectrum fish can see?

  • @Rytoast99
    @Rytoast99 6 лет назад +21

    For those wondering about the red light thing. Most fish cannot see red light so to them it would be the same as it being completely dark which causes them to think it is night where they school up for safety

    • @moncheval3816

    • @chabka34
      @chabka34 7 лет назад

      My guess was that they thought they saw blood in the water which would mean in Predator was nearby and schooling is a defensive tactic

  • @SuperTadpole75
    @SuperTadpole75 7 лет назад +14

    If they are anything like certain insects like ants. They cannot see red light. So it would be pitch black to the fish. Maybe since they think its night its a defensive mechanism to stay safe and together since its dark to them.

    • @PropKnucklesFPV

      Soup Badger colors and intensities of light are two different things.

    • @SuperTadpole75
      @SuperTadpole75 7 лет назад +1

      For ants if you place clear plastic over them so the light that shines through turns red. They still believe its dark and continue to work as if its dark. Take it away and they disperse to darker areas (When dealing with a colony). A good test would be see how they react with little to no light as well I suppose. Could be similar.

    Love the tank. Rainbows are one of my alltime favorites. As for your red light question.. I have seen many different reasons in the comments from stress to cant see red( they can and very well).. its an anti-predation mechanism. Throughout the Rainbows native range most predatory fish are crepuscular and are most actively hunting at dusk and dawn when the visable light spectrum ranges between 460-700nm due to scattering of VIB light during these times. Yes thee ol' safety in numbers is at play.

    I think they might be reacting like that because of mating behavior. They see a very bright red, it and are attracted to the each other naturally, also most fish mate in the early morning where the lighting is softer, red is a much softer frequency light than white/green/blue.

  • @christianlindau4892
    @christianlindau4892 5 лет назад +10

    Educated guess : In the wild, red lighting coincides with sun-set. This is when the predators come out, and your bite-sized pets instinctively gravitated towards the darkest, safest corner.

    I guess they have the same subconscious feeling for colors as we do. Probably the red water reminds them of a bloodbath when an attack has happened by a foe. So, of course, they look for safety. I do not understand why your aquarium lights come up with this feature since it seems pointless for the fish or even make them panic...

    Definitely should turn off the lights in the tank for the first few hours or so after introducing the fish to the new habitat. Reduces stress.

    I would absolutely love to see you construct a tank that consists only of native freshwater fish in the US only. Sunfish, bass, darters, perch, hell even a muskie or pike idc as long as its native to the United States i would absolutely 100% be thrilled to see that!!!

    The fish can't see red light, to them it suddenly gets dark, so they get closer together for protection.

    I'm happy to see you smiling after what you've been through over the past month or so. This tank looks fun! I would be hypnotized if it was in my home! Are they schooling fish? It looks like they are all over the place at random, but eventually will they swim in groups?

    Hi from the UK , Been following your videos for some time now, devastated for your loss of the arrowana.
    Would love to have seen the 375g as a chiclid setup but can't help agree with your thoughts on this being a favourite tank... keep up the awesome work.

    I'd recommend trying out another monster fish besides an Arowana. I'd love to see another monster fish get the spotlight in this huge tank.

    I have red gel films to put on my aquarium to trick the nocturnal fish into thinking it's nighttime and coming out

    As a dedicated rainbow keeper, I was hoping you do a variety of rainbow species, but even with just the red irians that is amazing. Some day I plan to have a big tank like that full of rainbows. Well dons, sir!

    Red wavelengths of light are the first color to be filtered out from light when it goes through water. Most aquatic animals can't see red light since red light doesn't exist in water except at the surface. Since it doesn't exist there then most animals in water have never developed a need to see red light. If you use only red lighting then everything will think it is night and act like they do in the dark (since to them it IS dark). We see them acting here the same way they do in complete darkness.
    In saltwater tanks we use this for watching or scouting for nocturnal animals. A lot of "bad" critters in saltwater tanks are nocturnal and you can use red light to catch something like a mantis shrimp that is killing your pets at night. Also in general there are tons of saltwater critters that are nocturnal and using red light would allow you to see the other "half" of your ecosystem that you would otherwise never realize was even there.

      Excellent explanation, but I fail to see how something unwanted (like a mantis shrimp) could end up in a tank if you hadn’t put it there in the first place?
      I admit I’m a novice and am probably reading your comment out of context.

    Most fish can't see red light very well so when it suddenly becomes "night time" they school up for safety

  • @witness00fleming

    Most fish have pretty terrible vision for red wavelengths of light. Likely when you turned off everything but the red light the rainbows freaked out and thought the sun just fell. Schooling is a stress response so I guess they got scared.
    I'd be interested to know how these guys behave at night when the lights are off and if they school together then too.

    Red is the colour which penetrates the least in water, and the fish probably don't even see it. So as soon as you turn off all the other colours they will see darkness and shoal together for protection.
