Disney's darkest villain song! Layne killed it! I've listened to this dozens of times already and his "BURN IT!" still makes me giddy and gives me chills. Cesar's air guitar... chef's kiss!!! Geoff's "What" made me sit up a little straighter. Yikes! He's such a good voice actor; his narrations are awesome too. J is definitely still part of the group, just on sabbatical. I love seeing Geoff take lead, but those arpeggios he did in the background while J.None sings... holy shamoly! He's so good at those.
Lol love that "BURN IT!" Part I feel like he got that line from the movie.
I’ve always been surprised that Disney opted to turn Victor Hugo’s Hunchback into a kids’ movie. The original story is *dark,* full of all the worst ecclesiastical abuses of power, subjugation and demonization of women, and fetishization of marginalized ethnic groups. Frollo is one of Disney’s most evil villains, and I think Voiceplay did his song incredible justice here. Geoff was terrifying, and I think Cesar, especially, did a fantastic job representing Frollo’s wild swings between piety and depravity.
A lot of the source material that Disney uses for their animated movies is really dark. Most people just don't realize it. The Lion King has straight up murder in it. The Little Mermaid is based on a folk tale about a dark siren of the deep (which Disney turned into a heroic princess). Frozen is based on a story about an evil ice queen (which, again, Disney turned into a heroic princess).
Nice to see Tony with the guys, even if Geoff does call him an idiot😀
I think Geoff enjoyed that way too much.😂 No wonder he didn’t want Kathy to do that part.

For a while, I thought no one could do Hellfire like Jonathan Young...This version is killer!
Both versions are totally different. And both versions are amazing and awesome!
Check out Tomi P's of Bassgang fame.... his version of Hellfire is maybe the only version I might like more than Jonathan's or Voiceplays... (to be more clear, it's Tomi P's solo version, had nothing to do with Bass Gang, it's more of a Peter Hollens or Geoff-Like multitracked version... it's amazing and criminally underrated!).

Yep - Hunchback of Notre Dame. Geoff's part is seriously vile. The guard is Tony Wakim. Did you miss Cesar's air guitar and riff? This song is stunning, wicked, mesmerizing and utterly unforgettable. All of them did the work to make this untouchable.
The hooded man is Tony, one of the original members who co owns the production company with Layne. With him there we had 4 generations of Voiceplay baritones there Layne, Tony, J, and Cesar The note from Geoff was D1 and that high from Eli was an F5!!!
It's sad that they have to keep replacing baritones, but then again, I don't think we could handle more than a couple lines of Layne singing (we'd all die of sweetness), Tony's Phantom was just so good, J is a godsend and DEFINITELY still part of the group, and Cesar adds even more playfulness and youth to the group... plus when he gets to sing in Spanish I melt, haha!
This was an incredible version of the song from Hunchback of Notre Dame. I think they picked the right person in Geoff to play Frollo. He played the tortured but egotistical Chancellor very well. He falls for Esmerelda and decides that if he can't have her than no one can, and she must burn at the stake as a "gypsy thief". The slight rough edge to his voice is the perfect touch and the basement bass notes every time he talks of hell is the perfect match for the character. Another winner for Voiceplay! WOW!!! I think my favorite arrangement for Layne. This was amazing!

Judge Frollo, the villain of Hunchback, is probably considered the scariest Disney villain. This is definitely song that is beautiful, but damn. You kinda just want to punch his entitled butt.
Yes. I actually detest Frollo. He is the a pitta me of the worst of mankind. But the song is so powerful and beautiful.
keep in mind esemerelda is 16 and frolo is like 50+
^this. Frollo's treatment of Esmerelda would completely unacceptable even if she were a mature adult, but her being 16 just makes it so, so much worse.
So glad you noticed the "more baritone" - which I also enjoyed! This grows on you like mould once you listen to it a few times....
This was the ultimate villain song. So close to the mark for Disney. This version is just epic.

Yep, TOTALLY Dennis! J. None is still a member of this group, he's just on sabbatical, but very much a part of Voiceplay. I love the duet between him and Cesar, their voices blend so nicely! Fantastic reaction!
Idk what’s crazier, how bad ass this song is, how creepy it is in context, or the fact it was an OG Disney Song.
Yes, the percussion really drives this song. And I love hearing Cesar doing more featured baritone snippets; plus his playing lead guitar is priceless. Of course, Geoff, Eli nd J were phenomenal as usual.

*sighs happily* I'm so glad they did a cover of one of the best Disney Villain songs.
I do highly recommend watching the movie! I'd argue that it's the darkest Disney movie* even with the happy ending (changed from the book because Victor Hugo does not do happy), but the themes had a profound positive effect on me when i saw it in the theater as a young child, and it's still one of my favorites. And of course, the music is phenomenal.
*I don't count The Black Cauldron because i like to pretend the movie does not exist. How they managed to turn such a wonderful book into that absolute travesty of a movie is a mystery for the ages.
There can never be a comparison between a single person singing a song and then the complex arrangments that VP bring to it. There's just no comparison.

This is without question more powerful than the original. But I honestly can't decide which one is better.
Geoff rarely has Layne singing in his arrangements, or he cuts away so you can’t see it. But Layne has gotten more comfortable singing in the videos, so he almost always gives himself a line to stand out. (That’s what we’ve all been asking for!). But never more than a line. Just to tease us.
I can’t stop listening to this song.

This is a Disney song. In a movie for kids
I’m missed watching it my son must not have been the right age. But I went to watch it after I heard them do a snippet of Hellfire in one of the top tens. I could not get the evil of that man out of my head for quite some time. He is everything that’s wrong in the world. But the song is incredible so I’m glad I watched it so I know the backstory. But at the same time, I wish I hadn’t seen it.
