I use an old toasteroven that I put outside on a table for anything that creates fumes. Yes I have to do smaller batches and more time but I have found that a better option then dealing with some of the bad fumes that lingered even with fans on from some of my crafting .
@@kpoppaen8751 most of the toaster ovens have a bake setting with temps up to 450F some even higher. So i just set it at the temp I need and bake for the results wanted.

HAD to finish cutting every single one of the blank cds I had (which was 4" high. Not sure if it was 50 or 100 lol but my thumb feels like it was 100! LOL!) and are putting them together to get ready to paint more!
I would paint each cd a swirl of colors, let them dry, then draw the lines with a micro tip sharpie before cutting. If you score the sharpie lines before cutting you won’t chip the paint. That way you don’t have to paint individual squares after cutting. Save time! Also you can fol the foil backwards after baking to pop the tiles off more easily.
Use graph paper instead of taking the time to draw lines. That will also allow you to do a couple sizes on each CD. This is an awesome idea, I was going to sell an old toaster oven but I'm keeping it now!
The rubberish cutting mats used in sewing are FANTASTIC for crafting! They come with grids and other measuring stuff printed on them already. It's been one of my best investments for crafting. 😁
There are also plastic scoring knives which work like glass cutting tools. Handheld electric hot knives work with regular X-acto blades, or get a good old pair of laminate cutting shears from your local hardware store. just a few suggestions on tools that might be a little less hard on your hands.

If the layers stick good enough to the bottom layer, maybe even book pages. But that might burn?? I can feel my brain thinking of many different ways to decorate between layers. I love this idea!! I expect you could use hard plastic like from packaging or food plastic boxes. Or Shrinky Dink acetate. Punch hole in corner for charms for journal jewelry. Unlimited ideas I think. A sharp enough exacto knife should be able to give you a score you could snap off along. Couple that with a cutting mat that has a grid already on it and your production time would be cut down dramatically with the investment of about $20 bucks in useful tools.
Soooo cool I love it. You seem like such a beautiful human being and wanted to let you know for your safety and those you love second hand stores for very cheap sell mini ovens. Sometimes the toxic of the paint and CD are left behind & when you cook regular food in your stove after, the toxicity can be left behind and hurt your health. Maybe have a mini toaster oven dedicated just for crafting and the other just for cooking. Loved the tile idea sooo much.
I watched a few other tile videos but yours was the best. You gave good instructions and I love your tiles. My landlady threw out a bunch of CD's yesterday and we dug them out of the trash today after I saw your video. 🤗
I’ve done this and it’s so fun! Just a couple notes to add: when you’re drawing your grid lines.. First: it helps to apply a small piece of tape on two ends to hold it in place for good straight lines. Second: don’t use too much paint.. it’ll squeeze out and make a mess of your edges…. And third: I also set the oven to 500 degrees but cut the time down to 13 minutes instead of 15. I’m getting better and better! I love this project!

I do a lot with polymer clay (plastic) I love what you are doing BUT you really need to get an old toaster oven and do this outside. Smaller batches yes. But at 500’ you are breathing the off gas of the paint. Fans won’t protect you. As someone who got asthma at 60 years old I can tell you you must protect your lungs. You’ll be thankful later. Am I going to try this? Yes!

I have 2 almost full spindles of blank cds (the old way to back up files from computers) I never used. Probably at least 150. I have the supplies if I can just get up the energy to do this. Great project!
Same here, down to finding the energy to do it. We've been 101-107 for several weeks, no end in sight. So I'm thinking, since she suggested drying them before baking, we could stack them in layers in some closed containers and put aside for cooler weather to bake. Meanwhile we figure out how we want to use them. Maybe scout out a few thrift shops and junk piles too. 😉
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial! These tiles somewhat resemble enamel on copper - something l have always wanted to do. I'd like to try affixing tiles to a window or light sconce for a faux stained glass effect. Looks like everyone's getting wind chimes for Christmas this year. Lol!
*{Easy way to remove the marker lines}* Throw all of the cut pieces into a ziploc bag, pour in a healthy dash of rubbing alcohol (the amount you use depends on how many pieces are in the bag)-seal it up and then shake/rub the bag around for several seconds, until they’re all clean. Then I fish them out and put them on a towel to dry. If I’m doing a LOT, I will reseal the bag to keep the alcohol from evaporating, so I can use it again and again-only adding a little bit of new alcohol as needed.👍
Fabulous! Fun project, excellent video. My suggestion to anyone trying this or similar projects is wear safety glasses while cutting and do your curing (baking) outside. Use a dedicated oven, never used for food again. I got a big toaster oven, two shelf model for under $10 at a yard sale. I use it outside with a stand fan nearby blowing away from my working area. Safety first is a real thing.

it would be ideal to use an oven you dont use for cooking - same goes for reheating circuit boards, very bad vapors land on the walls and then circulate everytime you reheat it.

I have found that rubbing alcohol will remove sharpie/permanent marker from most objects. Try adding a little alcohol to a cotton ball and wipe each tile after cutting if you don't want black edges or an x in the center tiles. With black marker, the sooner you remove it the better results (in other words, don't wait 6 months and expect the best results!) 💖🌞🌵😷
Acetone or nail polish remover would also work in the event of not having any rubbing/isopropyl alcohol. Not sure which of the 3 would work the best though.
@@RuinedTemple , be careful using acetone on plastic... acetone will melt plexiglass and other plastics. And it will take the finish off objects if you happen to splash any. Rubbing alcohol doesn't do any of these things... it just works on the marker. 💖🌞🌵😷

I had based my comment off of a recent personal experience with using acetone on one of those frosted translucent plastic open-top totes with the handle in the middle that are often used for storage & organization in or on bathroom cabinets, cupboards, drawers, shelves, countertops, or under the sink for all sorts of smaller products, supplies, tools, etc. that ppl tend to store there. It had some kind of paint that had spilled & dried in the bottom of it, so I poured a small amount of acetone in the bottom, just enough to cover the paint, & waited a few hours before dumping it & rinsing it out. It removed the paint without any melting issues, but I’m sure that it’s a much different kind of plastic than those thin l’il CDs! Probably best to stick with alcohol for this one, folks! This tut calls for melting by way of heat after you sandwich those colors in, NOT by way of chemicals before you even get the chance. 😉

Has anyone tried using them as wall tiles for tiling kitchen walls. We're in the process of refitting ours and would love to make 2 inch squares to use in this way. I was totally thinking these would look so cool in a kitchen! You could probably cut the cost down on that significantly using these. I feel like the install process would be the same as using resin tiles.
I am so glad I stumbled upon this video. I participated in the whole process up to the baking. Its super fun. It was a bit difficult to completely clean the CD. I had no alcohol in the house. Your tiles turned out really nice and it gives me many creative ideas. Maybe you can also just use two thin sheets of Plexiglas. you can also do everything with paint first and then cut pieces. But hey, lots of room to experiment. Thank you very much and many blessings.
If you boil those cds for about 10-15 minutes after you've cleaned them, they soften and can be easily cut with scissors.
How long do they stay soft? Would you have time to Trace your grid lines on the cd before cutting or do the harden back up rapidly?

Yes! My pyrography pen has a stencil cutting tip, and that works extremely well for fine cutting of plastic.

With a paint pen or metallic acrylic paint, you could add copper-colored borders to your tiles.

Has anyone tried using them as wall tiles for tiling kitchen walls. We're in the process of refitting ours and would love to make 2 inch squares to use in this way. I was totally thinking these would look so cool in a kitchen! You could probably cut the cost down on that significantly using these. I feel like the install process would be the same as using resin tiles.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this video. I participated in the whole process up to the baking. Its super fun. It was a bit difficult to completely clean the CD. I had no alcohol in the house. Your tiles turned out really nice and it gives me many creative ideas. Maybe you can also just use two thin sheets of Plexiglas. you can also do everything with paint first and then cut pieces. But hey, lots of room to experiment. Thank you very much and many blessings.
You could use plexiglass, but the cd adds an iridescence to the tiles. 💖🌞🌵😷
Wondering if handsanitizer will work to clean the CDs, esp. with a high alcohol content?
