Picked up an exclusive Malibu yesterday in OKC (Sharp things on May Ave - they have three left as of Feb 3 2024). Dragon scale, abalone button, 20CV, reverse tanto non coated. Black handle. This thing is delicious.
I was finally able to get a Malibu from my local knife store a few months ago and I've been carrying it frequently! Really happy that Protech is making more manuals this year and I'm excited to see what else they will bring in the future!
Really enjoying these Collab videos with The Knife Life!
I'm looking forwards to Pro-Techs next steps as well! Thanks for your continuing support!
I'm so glad they kept the blade clean with no thumb studs or cutouts. I wish more companies would follow suit. Button locks are so nice to operate as they keep your fingers out of the blade path.
Right after the Shot Show videos started, I said “Pro-Tech is gonna get a lot of my money this year” and so far I’ve been right. Love the Malibu and Mordax both as well as their autos.
The Knife Prophet himself! I've been fully converted, I like all of Pro-Tech's knives!
Appropriately timed. Got my runt 5 and my Malibu in the mail yesterday from you guys. I love them ❤
Love this series, keep it up!
Dave and Pro-Tech are top notch, love the Malibu and the Mordax.
I'm glad you enjoy the videos! Thanks for your support!
My only complaint about my Protech Malibu operator is that it was not Sharp to a standard that I would expect from ProTech. It is hands-down my favorite knife I've purchased and I have a lot of knives when buying it I did not realize how hard this knife was to come across so glad I paid the extra money for it
i don't know if it is a more recent problem but both my malibu and my runt 5 came with pretty unimpressive grinds, my malibu was okay aside from uneven bevels but my runt was really bad.
about 70% of my runt's edgecwas shiny and dull and the bevels were very uneven, it even made benchmade's grinds look good lol.
i hope they realize the problem and teach that sharpener how to do it, cause having such well made knives with shoddy grinds is kinda a bummer.
@@RUclips-Censorship-Police brother when I went to put my Edge on my Malibu I hit it with the 400 and a little piece in the middle chipped off the original Edge I called them up bitching they turned around and told me to send it back to them and they would analyze that I said there's no need you heat treated it wrong still waiting on a reply from the service department probably will never buy another Protech again and I'm not all too impressed with Microtech either
@schlunggicheib6068 Same. I had a malibu get delivered half an hour ago and it was duller than my EDC that I've been abusing. Damn shame that I have to sharpen a new knife.
Finally got a Malibu, haven't arrived yet, but im in EU and you guys are far far away, waiting with anticipation tho.
Great video! Love Protech. They're great knives and Dave seems like a great guy.
Thanks! Pro-Tech is awesome and Dave is pretty cool!
I love the presentation on the Malibu and plan to add one to my protech collection as a everyday user
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Which Malibu are you looking at snagging?
The Malibu is so close to being perfect. Unfortunately it's almost comically thick behind the edge -- at least on my early version. If they gave it a nice, thin hollow grind it would be unstoppable. Oh yeah, also add an opening slot. 😀
same on my newer magnacut version, it's not the best performer tbh.
@schlunggicheib6068 still feel the same about the knife? I have a local shop that has the malibu in magnacut, and I was considering it. Spyderco has some magnacut models coming, but are still several months out.
@@matthewweaver1123 Super disappointed in the Malibu I picked up with Magnacut steel. Sticky lock button and blade so dull (brand new) that it hangs up trying to slice paper. I'm returning it.
I have a first production PR1 Malibu and love it. I bought another in the textured handle. It's even better for EDC.
Nice presentation. Great video.
Nice knowing the history of a great knife. Thanks 🎯
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
1:10 - 1:15: I'll be the first one to say that some of the other knives that "were not" Cali legal, are actually legal in some counties. For example, in LA County, any folder, OTF, switchblade, automatic, and Swiss army knife that has a blade length of 2.99" or below are legal by LA county law. If you're in orange county, and if I am no mistaken, it will only be illegal if the blade length for any knife type I mentioned above is under 4", 3.99" or below, are legal by orange county law. You can legally break the state limit law then, in California. So it's also dependent on where you're at in California.
Edit: The law changed in California recently for the length of folders in Cali. Some guy got prosecuted for using a utility knife, without the intent of hurting anyone, and was just cutting some light amount of wood or whatever, with a 4 or 5 inch blade. So if you have a 3.5" folding knife, it's now legal in California. Any blade length for any folder is legal now in California. If you Google "California folding knife blade length 2023", even though it's a 2021 article, it's okay to have any folder with any blade length for that folding knife. Shouse has this new law under 2023, so it's been changed recently.
noncompliance is way more fun here anyway so I just carry what I want :)
I love my Pro Techs
i received my magnacut malibu this monday and while i'm amazed by the action, i think the knife is overhyped.
why? i think the blade could be a better performer, the stock and grind aren't very impressive for a edc knife, they should've made a high hollow grind and take maybe 0.5mm off that stock.
also the build is pretty simple which isn't a bad thing, but it feels kinda weird when i consider that i paid nearly 300 bucks for it, i have reate made peña's which feel much more high-end and offer full ti construction for the same price or less.
it's certainly a good knife and i dig the magnacut, it's just not a $300 knife and i have better performers for edc tasks (also i wouldn't say that it is a hard user, cause even with the cross-hatch pattern it doesn't offer enough traction and the ergos feel kinda crampy if you have bigger hands).
Great video, I'd love to see more content with similar concept
We are working on other videos right now! If you haven't seen it yet there is also a more complete history on Pro-Tech itself. Let us know if you have any requests!
@@TheKnifeLifeChannel off the top of my head a video about history of pocket knifes in general would be interesting to see and to top it off you could debate about where the pocket knife world is going, is there going to be more knife people or less. Well, idea about debating where the knife world is going isn't as good because now I think everyone can answer that for themselves. Anyway I can't wait to see more videos
Loving my MX101-Blue!
just one black reverse tanto in stock at bhq (better get it now) - now im a big malibu fan - but the best "ability" of anything in life is avail-ability - sadly the malibu is near impossible to p/u - im not just talking the basic black - smooth ones - but even the higher end $500+ nurled - annodized - colored one....so if one can never actually pick up the knives - even at $500+ how good is it actually ? just saying - i know PT is a niche company - but "out of stock" like 90% of the time it tough to swallow
There is a handful of other knifemakers that produce limited quantities despite the growing demand. Protech not withstanding.
BRS (Blade Runner Systems), HOM Design, Squid Industries, and Chris Reeve to name a few. They have next to nothing in stock very frequently. I don't even know how they stay in business.
BRS, Squid, and HOM make excellent balisongs that flippers loves to get their hands on.
And every other folding knife collector wants a Chris Reeve. Lol
Nature of the beast I suppose.
Would like to see a history of Spartan/ Harsey knives..
Noted! Thanks for letting us know!
Great History Of Protech Awesome Company
I own a few button lock flippers. The detent on the Malibu is leaps and bounds better than the others.
It really is in its own league...
Pro-tech....please make a cleaver version of the Malibu flipper !!! Something that doesn't have a pointed blade!!
looking forward to magnacut mordax
Thank G i already got one 💪♥️🔥😎😅
those tritium button operators are hitting the stores! grabbed one up luckily
Love this knife. But im still super annoyed with the sticky button issue present on 3 of my malibus
I keep waiting for an auto Malibu!
Here's another request for the history I'd like to see next:
History of the cold steel dragonfly wakizashi sword
Noted! Thanks for letting us know!
James Allen and the Knife Life makes me want to skip dinner and buy knives 😂
Hmmm... maybe make sure to eat at least a little!
Does the arcform slimfoot factor into the Malibu’s history? They certainly share some design similarities
Based on my research it does not. But my interest in Arcform has been piqued.
I’ve been trying to buy this knife for over three years and I cannot get it very upsetting
Blade hq has some right now
You clearly don't look at the secondary market because they are everywhere. I sold one a month ago
Same
About to list a textured black 20cv, skiff bearings and 15 deg mirror kme edge. Can get a nice one in secondary if you look around and patient.
@@NoseClams secondary market is clearly higher
im still waiting for a lefty model
I know Strider isn't a big company for blade hq but I'd like to know a little bit about their history
How a history of ZT video?
This dude is giving me: “it all started the day Dave Wattenberg was born…” vibes
Excellent video
Looking forward to a left-handed Malibu ...
