    Barbie in the Nutcracker is probably the most incredible film ever made. I grew up on it and my sister and I rewatched it maybe two Christmases ago and it was even better than I remembered. Completely worth watching and absolutely hilarious. My one issue with Barbie movies is that they never get over their boxes on pointe! The animators always have them pulled back! Clearly they need your help.

    For all those wondering or feeling betrayed by Barbie in comparison to the ballet Swan Lake on stage_
    This is closest to the original libretto by Tchaikovsky and Begichev and especially to the sources. Very well done, Barbie!
    (Musäus' The stolen veil, Daniel Auber's Le lac des fees, and "Sacountala")
    (without Tchaikovsky's dramatized additions from his dark opera mood (; )

    So, a question: I saw Swan Lake several times in different theatres, performed by different companies. The ending was almost always different in all of the versions I watched. There was one in which both Prince and Odette died, one where only the Prince died, one where only Odette died and one with sort of "happy" ending where villain died but the couple went their own seperate ways. So is there like original version, or canon one, if you will?
    Update: The OG version apparently had both of them die. It's worth noting that thanks to the user in the replies, I have found out that 14(!) alternative endings have been noted in performances by big ballets - who knows how many more versions have been adapted by smaller companies!

    • @flowerdolphin5648
      @flowerdolphin5648 2 года назад +36

    • @felicity1877
      @felicity1877 2 года назад +9

      Hey, just as update from me -what does it mean" both of them die"? In the original version, Odette is running away from Siegfried and he takes her protection crown down and throws it into the lake, and Odette is falling into his arms, and botn start hiding unter the waves....In many ballets and operas, the water would be home for spirits and fairies, and there would be an ending having both reunited (just like in the opera "Lurline", the ballet "Ondine"). Hey, just the question what the original Swan Lake is...In Tchaikovsky's original libretto Odette's mother was a good fairy and the other swan maidens were fairies, too, living at the lake under the rule of Odette's grandfather, who gave Odette the magical crown as protection, and so Mattel just actually mixed up both (later deleted) characters into one!!!
      (I did the whole research as videos on my channel (; )
      Swan Lake is based on the fairy tale "Swan Pond" by Musäus (also known as "The Stolen veil"), which had been adapted into the opera and ballet "Le lac des fees"/"Fairy Lake" with music by Daniel (!) Auber - with a happy ending, of course. So, the Barbie version is trying to be very faithful to the original sources!
      The tragic ending is something only added by Tchaikovsky, and still somehow mysterious, as both are drowning in the lake, though Odette had told the prince that it would be her and her grandfather's home....Tchaikovsky had been preferring very dark operas around the time he had been composing Swan Lake, and I guess, he would have done it later otherwise. He had earlier composed a children's ballet "Lake of the swans" for his family.

    One of my very favorite takes on Swan Lake is Mercedes Lackey's The Black Swan. Odile is Rothbart's daughter and a sorceress in her own right, although Rothbart tries to keep her magic confined to more domestic skills. He sets a challenge for Odette to both keep her and the other swans trapped and to ensnare a neighboring queen who uses womanly wiles to maintain power. It's an excellent spin on the tale.

    I went to my first Swan Lake performance around age 6, not knowing the ending. I've been to other performances since, obviously knowing the ending. (Loved the movie, too!) A related anecdote:
    My mother hand made a custom lace shawl for my wedding many years ago. The pattern was inspired by the movements of Swan Lake. Some of her friends were... unsure if it was appropriate - because of the ending. So, mother made one in a midnight blue-black first (which was gifted to husband's grandmother) and made my wedding shawl in ivory after I saw the finished black version. Both were extremely beautiful and Swan Lake is my favorite ballet. Still happily married 13 years later.

    I grew up with Barbie and my all-time favorite movie was Barbie Nutcracker! I still watch it every Christmas, as well as the original Nutcracker. It was the film that made me love ballet but sadly I did not pursue it. Either way, I still have a heart for it, and thus was the reason I subscribed.

    I am floored. I've never seen this movie, but I watched Swan Princess a lot as a kid. There's no dancing or the original music in that one. I literally didn't know that it was based on Swan Lake until today.

    I loved these movies as a kid. I think it's really cool how they showcased fantastic classical music to a young audience in a way that was accessible. It doesn't have any ballet scenes or use the original music but there was another version of Swan Lake made for kids that I loved called the Swan Princess that you might enjoy.

    I love your reactions, especially when you do dramatisations of the videos. This was pure gold.
    Firstly, talking of childhood and traumatising dancers, if you haven't seen Dance Moms Swan Duet between Maddie and Chloë then you need to. It was really early on, maybe even season one. They were amazing, Chlöe was stunning! She's really good at dark and they were perfect together.
    Secondly, I live on a canal barge in London UK and we have loads of water birds around us, but there is nothing like the sight of the early morning winter sun shining on the frozen canal, glittering like tiny diamonds and see the Swan couple come out from under the bridge, we might all be frozen to the moorings, but he majestically raises himself up, wings unfurled and flapping to get his chest over the ice edge then crashes down on it shattering some more, each time he breaks another three feet of ice, then you see her emerging from under the bridge, in total contrast to her Mr Swan's forceful rise and drop, she gently glides out, through the narrow channel he's created for her, serene, beautiful and blindingly white in the low sun, he puffs his chest out even more when he sees her emerge, gliding, with no obvious effort. It is the most beautiful and breathtaking sight, you'd love it! 🩰

    As far as I know they actually used motion capture with real dancers to create the dance scenes, which is why they look fairly realistic apart from the tiny feet xD

  • @Galliri

    Your comment about working with a real dancer in that first scene - this film and the Barbie Nutcracker one both used mocap to animate choreography from the New York City Ballet!
    There's another film based on Swan Lake called the Swan Princess that basically used the Disney formula - animal sidekicks, musical numbers etc. Doesn't use the original music at all, and adds whole chunks on to the plot. I'm not sure if you'd be interested in reacting to it since all of the actual ballet parts are missing, but it's a genuinely enjoyable movie that I loved as a kid. Somehow, it has 9 sequels.

    When my daughter was little she was obsessed with ballet. We couldn't afford lessons but we rented every ballet movie we could find. This was the early 2000s before streaming video etc. On the Barbie Swan Lake DVD there was also an extra tutorial that explained all the names and how to of the dance steps.

    I will always be sad that Disney blocked Mattel from using "Sleeping Beauty" in their title, because I read they were planning to do the Sleeping Beauty ballet too, but because of Disney, they scrapped the idea and did Rapunzel instead.

    I have yet been able to see a live ballet, but am glad to know how the real ballet is supposed to end for whenever I get the chance to see it in person lol. I Would've been crushed to see it expecting the movies end lol

    Sooo, I am way too old to have grown up on Barbie ballet movies, BUT my favorite actual Barbie as a kid was the ballet one. She had a big, fluffy tutu and pointe shoes. My only complaint was the tiny gold crown on her head that wouldn't come off!
