Mega Man 3 (ＵＳＡのロックマン３) is the first game in the Mega Man / Rockman series to introduce sliding (though the ability to charge the Mega Buster would have to wait until game 4). It also introduced Rush the robotic dog, who provides the abilities of Rush Coil, Rush Marine, and Rush Jet. Furthermore, after you beat the 8 robot masters, the game makes you revisit modified versions of four stages to fight the Doc Robots, who imitate the robot masters from Mega Man 2. This set a precedent in the Mega Man series to have additional stages between the main robot masters and Dr. Wily's fortress.
This run completes the game about 00:20.62 seconds faster than the previous movie ( tasvideos.org/1150M ) thanks to a new route, more glitches, and better optimization.
This run was console verified using micro500's TASLink replay device ( • TASBot plays Rockman (... ) (with a window mode of 3.5 ms).

9 years later and the run still stands. It's amazing of how well you can optimize a game glitches an all to get this time.

@@ChromeCobra420that's not what they meant. We all know TAS are all mechanical but the inputs still have to be made by a human . What the OP comment meant was Megaman 3 must've been pretty optimized and well put if even a TAS had to take 30 mins to complete

Top Man's stage always cracked me up because of how obvious it was that they ran out of ideas. "Uhh, what else can we do with tops? OK screw it, giant cats and a bunch of jungle textures and stadium lights."
due to the robot masters being fan submissions, the developers often just made levels and then assigned robot masters to them with minor changes made to fit them more. ever notice how heat man's stage is essentially just a sewer?

Maybe this factors in too but in development someone tripped on a cord of Keiji Inafunes computer and fucked up what was the original background of Top Man’s stage so he had to re do it again real quick

I discovered this as a kid actually. For some reason I tried to slide and jump right after that screen transition and found that weird glitchy existence.
Spike death sound audio glitch is my favorite swag strat

My first Mega Man experience, and my favorite Mega Man of all-time. Every stage song, a banger, including Wily's entire Castle. I played the living ish out of this game growing up. And, not only for the challenge, but for the soundtrack as well.
Not even a TAS can use Top Spin without taking damage.

You can actually use top spin without taking damage. If an enemy dies in one hit, mega man won’t take damage. You can actually see this tactic in action at 2:56.

Wow that was beautiful! I used to play this when I was a kiddo. Brought back memories of just how bad I was at it hah. Still beat it after many many attempts!
The fastest time I beat in my own Speedrun was like a low 44 minutes this was when I have the weird space jump glitch and the up climbing motion was very slow when it happened to me that’s why I ended up beating it quickly in 44 minutes.
Update: After not speedrunning Mega Man 3 for a long time I now beat my old record and now my fastest time is now 42:57 which is my new fastest time.

There's a glitch that lets you scroll your cursor to weapons you don't own yet. I forgot exactly how it works though, I've done it on real hardware.

I know the regular glitch where you get Rush Jet, but with empty energy.
You just beat shadow man, scroll to his weapon on the sub screen, and move over to the spot where Rush jet would be, then correct power ups to fill it up. Secret of the pros. ;)
@@Yakushii what's hard to understand about that? It simply carried over into the next level, and all weapon energy gets refilled when you start a new stage.
it's a testament to how much of a rush job mega man 3 is that not only does it run faster without the music playing but there are multiple easily accessible bugs that can clear the music for a time
You do realize the 6502 is both the main CPU AND the sound chip/CPU? It’s not like the Mega Drive where you can make another microprocessor the sound CPU (that being the Z80). The NES was extremely limited in general. Even bigger games like Battletoads is susceptible to massive performance issues, no matter how impressive it is.

A pretty funny tip: all Robot Masters in MM3 are weak to their own weapons, doing 4 points of damage per hit.
It's really a tragedy that Top Man's ability isn't the counter to Hard Man.

@@LunaMinuna the word "top", as in "to give top", can mean to give oral sex. Hard Man feels self-explaintory.
@@LunaMinuna no joke. Hard man's ability is technically the super effective weapon to top man, but it is so slow, it essentially would kill a speed run.
21:40 Spark Shock's only use in Mega Man 3. And people mock the Top Spin!
People give way too much slack to the Top Spin. It's a very good weapon with clearing hordes of smaller enemies.

Also, Wily with Gamma can also be killed with Search Snake and Shadow Man with the Shadow Blade, as the video clearly shows.

Mega Man speedruns get REALLY interesting once Rush and the Sliding mechanic were implemented.
Mega Man 1 didn't have much, Mega Man 2 had zips because of the Item, but Mega Man 3 now has you rhythmically pressing Down+Jump while also trying to figure out the best Rush routes
1 didn't have much? What do you mean? Elec, Ice, Flame, Bomb and Guts stages all have zips, and so do all the Wily stages. The only one that doesn't really have anything is Cut. Every stage after that has glitches and zips, and a lot of them.
this game's speedrun being "interesting" can be more attributed to it being incredibly rushed and held together with duct tape than introducing rush and the slide

Speedruners try to cut down on lag where they can through gameplay. Mario 64 runs typically adjust the camera on dire dire docks because of this reason since the submarine causes lag. You can still see lag on top man's stage when more than one of the Met dozens spawn, they just kill most things before they cause lag
There's a rom hack that greatly reduces the slow down, and even restores some of the content left out before the game shipped.
@@heroteen16 That's on a cart twice as big as this though; the base game was already trying the deal with the memory restrictions on the 3Mbit cart the game was in.

@@heroteen16 Theoretically, yes. However, it can't be played on hardware right now because NES flashcarts can't handle games higher than 512KB/4Mbit.

@@solarflare9078 no, the inputs are made by TAS, the programmer of the TAS decides which frame it shoots, jumps or whatever.
I Remember having a family computer and having like those cartriges that hold a lot of games, and coincidentally, It had megaman 3. Literally only Megaman 3. and something was really off about it, I Couldnt take damage from ANY source, aside from things that instantly kill you like voids and spikes and stuff. Odd.

Maga Man 3 was one of the hardest Maga man games and yet this guy beats itm like its nothn
It isn't a guy playing it, it's a bot playing it that these 2 have made to run this game. They can go frame by frame and do what they want to do, then have it run the game using those inputs those chose. It takes weeks and months to set it up, then the bot does it automatically.
Mega Man 3 isn't hard at all. The doc robots, maybe, but it's otherwise of average difficulty. Nowhere near among the likes of Mega Man 1, Mega Man 4, Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man 9, Mega Man 11, etc
A fine TAS........ I always thought they were getting slim on Robot Master ideas by this game.....

1st ver: Lost 1 hp when U take 1dmg.
2nd ver : Lost 2hp when U take 1dmg.
