Is Sea of Stars Worth Your Time? (review)

- Overall Sea of Stars is a good game, it's just not a great one.
Sure, it hits the nostalgia in all the right ways, But I walked away disappointed. Because while this game has all the heart and polish of a masterpiece, with best in class visuals, and catchy music, the pacing and weak writing hold it back from being the best classic JRPG for the modern day.

Thank you. I thought I had been taking crazy pills with how well this game is being recieved. Kudos to a genuinly independent dev team for making and publishing such a polished product, but Sea of Stars plays its full hand gameplay and exploration wise in the first 5-10 hours and there isnt enough sunstance in the story or characters to stop the gameplay loop from getting boring fast.
Yeah super impressive what they've done. Like really, good for them. But this game needs to be half the length.
Dam yall have wildly pessimistic takes for no reason lol. Being jaded isn't easy though I guess. Game is 30 hours not even long. It's literally impossible to even scratch the surface of exploring in tbe first 5-10 hours. Playing with the relic that lowrrs HP by 95% and making enemies invincible while casting adds a very tough challenge. Wheels is fun until you defeat the watchmaker. In this video he mentions 20 minute fights. So the inability of the reviewers directly translated into a negative review when it sounds like they jyst don't understand what's going on.
@@dannyhilljr518 hifi rush is 10 hoursish, undertale is 7 hours and maybe many other that i havent played also have great story for that amount of time, not everyone have a lot of times in their hands, some clear 60 hours game in 1 week, some in months. And yeah very tough challange, owh how i love using moonerang over and over again because the other 2 often need to use MP to heal. Like of course the we wont be using that from start of the game to the final boss, right?
I agree i dropped the game after roughly 10 hours because it just felt too safe. The game is just perfectly okay, i highly doubt i'm missing out on much by not finishing it.
It's a good game, I just don't think it's worth your time if that time is limited. I would have loved it when I was 12 and had all the time in the world for something like this.
Its Nice to see that you have an opinion that most of people disagree and still you do your own thing. You have a history with jrpg and are more sensitive if your needs are not met. Good for you my man👏🏼

The red bar along the bottom of your video thumbnail made me think I had already watched this video, so I was ignoring it and even about to click the "Don't recommend -> already watched" buttons until I saw how recent this video was. You should remove that red bar if you want more views on your videos.

I like that there's a lot of thought in this to the nice and the yikes in the game, looks really awesome but if the pacing is off then i can see why you'd be disappointed in it

After Octopath Traveler 2, it really painted Sea of Stars in a dull light for me. I can't see Sea of Stars as anything other than aggressively mediocre and overrated... and it just won't ever shut up about Garl.
I saw a couple of other reviews stating Garl was the highlight...I just don't see it. His dialogue always took me out of the moment.
Did you finish this game? I feel that a lot of the complaints here are valid for the first act, the beginning is rough. But i found a lot of the story elements in later acts, as well as additional characters you meet, elevate the story to something more than "cliche character is chiche"
The alchemist and his backstory for instance, or seriaa and her mystery history. The island home you build, let alone Garl's later arc.
I understand not spoiling the game, but that is counterintuitive when you're not recommending it.

I think the last quarter of the game hurt it overall. Without spoiling anything, I was left disappointed and underwhelmed with the ending. I still overall liked it. However, the pacing was rough for the story and it didn't do anything special. It was just a good game overall that could've been much better.
iam genuinely surprised you didnt mention the combat that have the same moveset from start to finish

I had never played a turn based rpg before and loved this game, I’ve looked at many reviews and no one I’ve seen has also not played a game like this, and half of every review is comparing it to 30 year old games
You have never played turn-based rpg before and loved this game, make sense and good for you. You see turn-based is simple so traditionally the story is where they compensate over the simplicity of the gameplay, sadly this game doesn't accomplish that. They dump all of their budget on the graphic that they straight up cutting the money for the writing department, hell I don't even think they had one to begin with.

@@matheuscabral9618 I don't typically use a term "mary sue" towards a video game character, but he fits it like a glove. I'm sure developers just wanted to give a Joe Everyman a spotlight, but they went overboard and created a literal cooking God who solves every problem in his path, is loved by everyone, and when he's not on the screen everyone wonders "where's Garl?" or "remember how fun it was to be with Garl?".
Garl is force-fed down the player’s throat at the cost of any chance to develop Zale and Valere. It feels like the two main characters would have been better served as silent protagonists if this was the direction the developers wanted to take the Sea of Stars cast. When they do open their mouth, Garl interjects and talks over everyone else. It’s all so ridiculously done.
I was massivly anoyed by the lack of mouse-support on pc... is it fkn 1980??? I dont have any console, ergo no controller and so i refunded the game half an hour after i installed it...
No. A watered down version/clone/derivative of Chrono Trigger. Too easy, too infantile, too shallow
