I’m a business owner and I can confirm they’re not giving us our business license. I paid $1100 and they denied me. Then gave me a court hearing where they said if we pay $250 we’ll be good to open. I paid and they’re still sending city workers to try and shut me down.

One thing these elected officials have in common is that when someone is speaking to them they put their head down and focus on marking up some paperwork.
That is one of the most disrespectful things I have seen because it means they see the people they represent as being worth nothing and it my opinion also that they do not have confidence in their mandates.

Why would a church need a business license??
The US Government considers Churches to be a business that collects then distributed donations so are required to get a tax number to qualify for exemptions. Counties, towns and cities require churches to obtain a permit for the same reason. The permit allows those entities to inspect their buildings to ensure they're structurally sound, have proper sanitation and easily accessible emergency exits. If the church prepared meals for members or to give away, the permit allows inspection by health officers to see if those meet restaurant codes for being clean, sanitized, have safe appliances and proper refrigeration.

Small local governments which allow staffing bloat to set in are not doing the city any favors, and don't automatically result in a higher standard of governance. Mayors of some local governments, small but even mid-size, have less workload, stress, and demands on their time than a mom-n-pop business.
@thehall9000 If you know how business runs. They all have a structure. No matter the size. Every branch of government has certain jobs. The City of Harvey has a Police department, fire department, an office of the clerk, a water department, planning and inspection department, public works department among other departments. Of course it’s going to have to employ people in different aspects of the city.
Those things have to be in place in order for it to function as a municipality!

Requiring a business license for a church that’s not operating a daycare nor any other kind of business is asking for trouble.
Nope. Most counties, towns and cities require churches to obtain a permit to operate as a business. The IRS considers Churches to be a business so require them to obtain a tax number to qualify for tax exemptions. Local permits allow the local governments to inspect their buildings for structural soundness, proper sanitation and easy to access emergency exits. If they have a kitchen where meals are prepared, the that's inspected by the city health department to ensure those are kept clean and sanitary, have safe to use appliances and proper refrigeration.

But when a building is just a church, no other businesses like daycare or feeding ppl then requiring permits is getting into a sticky situation. We dealt with it here by allowing churches in any zoning district because it opened the argument that zoning influences land prices & only churches in certain zoning districts is placing a requirement that they be able to afford the property. I still remember & elvyed official saying “I don’t see a trailer, I see a church.” Hard to believe but they let a church put a mobile home on a lot! Churches have more voting power in some places & when elections are held in June instead of November it’s excellent for getting voters who pay attention to the local issues but at the same time voter turnout is low. When there’s over 5,000 ppl in a district & less than 200 vote it makes for tight races. So I learned that in my area not to mess with a church. We used to joke that we’d wish they’d convert to snake handlers so we didn’t have to deal with some of the ppl. 😂

sorry about your luck, guys, but it's hardly rare that a church is required to get a business license, and such paperwork is important depending on if you're incorporated or not. this doesn't take away their non-profit status. the mayor should give clear and simple reasons why, though.
