    Episode 43
Is Double Dragon 2 for the NES the best game in the series? What started out as a simple upgrade kit for the original arcade game quickly turned into something MUCH bigger! When the game finally hit the NES, the developers added TONS of extra content - it was a whole new game!
This time Technos fixed the major problem with the first NES game and got the 2 player co-op mode working! This would become one of the all-time greatest 2 player games for the NES.
So how did this amazing game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the game play where we'll learn:
    * What are the different DIFFICULTY MODES? Why should you choose Supreme Master?
    * SECRET Tricks to start with EIGHT lives instead of the usual FOUR!
    * How to perform ADVANCED ATTACKS! The Hyper Uppercut, Hyper Knee, Spinning Cyclone Kick, Hair Grab, AND MORE!
    * Secret CODES you can use to CONTINUE after running out of lives! Different codes for different Missions!
    * Techniques for defeating every enemy type: Williams, Ropers, Lindas, Chin Taimei, and more!
    * Gain TONS of EXTRA LIVES by using a dangerous GLITCH!
    * EASY ways to get through DIFFICULT PLATFORMING sections!
    * Strategies for defeating EVERY BOSS, even the SHADOW WARRIOR... AND MORE!
    Thanks for watching!

I agree, though I preferred the platforming in II to the same in I and III. I's controls were far worse for even simple jumps, and III had no margin for error. II was awful, but when you ccoplished a jump section it felt really good, you know?

Interesting fact: All subsequent versions of Double Dragon have ended up denying Marian's death. In both the arcade and the DD3 NES game, Marian is alive. In the NES version of the game, she is possessed by the final enemy, Princess Noiram (Cleopatra in the Japanese version). Strangely, in the arcade DD3 and Super Double Dragon it is mentioned or appears in the manuals. In the DD3 arcade it is said that she is also the seller of the weapons store.
The only game that accepts Marian's death in the second game is the fighting arcade "Rage of the Dragons", although it is not official canon. It was recently announced that Marian will be a playable character in River City Girls 2.

  • @caslaBBalsac
    @caslaBBalsac 2 года назад +2

Mechanically speaking, the Doppleganger records your attacks throughout the game, and uses what you use.
Energy Balls represent weapon use, and disappearing represents your grab attacks. So you can theoretically cheese it by avoiding weapons and grabs. Test it with a game genie even. In fact, this doesn't relegate you to weak attacks either, as it appears to have no analog to your whirlwind kick, jump kick, or knee.
Also, Marion isn't dead in DD3, just captured by Cleopatra or mind controlled, depending on the version.

    • @Rascarrr
      @Rascarrr 2 года назад +1

In DD3 it is actually way easier to make it to the final stage than in DD2, because DD3 has less instant death bullshit parts in it. The secret to that game is to only do the jumping spinning kicks whenever you're controlling Billy and/or Jimmy. It is by far their best move and will kill enemies in two hits. (in most of the stages anyway) Once you get the second dude (Chin?) just use his punch combo. Just stand with your back against a wall and mash the punch button and you will own enemies with it. It is crazy powerful.

Wow! I'm happy to see everything here. Also finally a game I know more than you!
The three things you didn't mention are...
    1) When an opponent is starting to stand up, they are in the kneeling position if you try to throw a punch you'll actually throw a knee. The knee effectively puts them in the bent over animation.
    2) Instead of just kneeling them in the face when you have them bent over you can press down and punch and you deliver an elbow to the spine. It's stronger than the knee. A ton of enemies can be beat with a stomach kick to bend them over then two elbows to the neck then throw them over your shoulder. Pretty sure doing that to someone in real life has similar effects.
    4) When in the level with the overhead ceiling the most effectively strategy is to jump into the ceiling. It doesn't hurt you. Then when you start to stand again press both buttons. This fires off the hyper knee. Which is the most damaging move in the game. It also lifts you back up into the ceiling. Which sets up another knee. Rinse and repeat.
    5) When crossing the lake in mission 4 the bottom path is easier. The reason why is if you press up and walk up against the wall where the ladder is it lines you up perfectly with the best line to take it's just jump jump jump jump at that point. You don't need walk up on the little floating piece as your video showed. It's easy to walk up too much and fall into the water.
    6) The same as above in a way. When you are on the second to last level... Just before walking into the big room you press up and press against the wall. That's puts you at the perfect height to be able to strike the ninjas that run out after you.
    7) You showed it but didn't describe it. When you are getting up and in that kneeling position you can press both buttons to jump which will do a hyper knee. Or you can press punch and do the hyper Uppercut. I talked about it in number 4, but wanted to point out that it wasn't mentioned. It's pretty much the best way to attack enemies in the game.

I love the inclusion of the cyclone kick. It looks super cool and in a lot of side-scrolling beat'em ups, it would be considered a "special" move and probably cost you life.

Definitely a favorite of mine. I ALWAYS had trouble passing the Mansion of Terror stage due to the notorious platforming. I definitely need to memorize those codes again and definitely whip out the NES and play it again.
One thing for sure, the PC Engine/TurboGrafx CD version, which is heavily based on THIS version, starts with the Shadow Warriors attacking a few civilians and the Lee brothers rescue them. However, when they get to Marian's apartment, the Shadow Warriors killed her. The ending is also the same in that version too which Marian is brought back to life after defeating the Shadow Warrior boss. It's also 2-Player simultaneous and you can change the settings in the options menu. You'll love the animated cutscenes there. Main problem: It costs a FORTUNE to own that game, so you'd probably have to play it via emulation or a repro.
The Japanese Megadrive version was basically a port of the original Arcade game done by PalSoft, which I believe was a division of Technos.

Back when I was a kid, we called the "Hyper Knee" the "Phoenix Knee." This game in particular was one of my fave NES titles, and as a result, I pounded away at it for hours on end. Ended up getting so versed in that attack that everything was dying at a rapid pace.

Always glad to see more Double Trouble! When I first played the game and hit the false ending, I was a little peeved that I didn't get the actual final boss. But I liked the game enough to play it again start to finish on Hard. Definitely one of my favorites for the NES.

For cyclone kick, you don't need to repeatedly press both attack buttons. Just press one time the attack button when you're almost at the higher point of your jump

You can use the ladder against the Abore during the gauntlet. Climb up the ladder, he jumps up, you give him the tornado kick and climb down the ladder, he jumps down, you give him the tornado kick and climb up the ladder, rinse and repeat til he’s gone

Thank you for sharing this. I have a fondness for this game as it is one of the first NES games I remember defeating. I have a Xbox One and it was available in their App Store, so I got it for around $5. This video definitely makes me want to play the game.

Love your vids. I keep going back to the classics as part of reliving some of my fav childhood times. These games are so much fun and actually make me LOL with some of these moves and characters. I forgot about most of the moves so when I did them accidentally it was a total welcome surprise. Love blasting the enemies off the screen or up in the air. Was still in grade school when most of the NES library came out and to this day I impressed myself with some of the games I beat or got far despite the 8-bit difficulty then.

That Burnov strategy... the only thing that comes into my mind is he: "wait up, you won't go any further" after the knee attack: "Aaaargh.... flies off-screen and cease to exist". XD
I knew about the mission 5 excesive extra lives glitch (hard to setup, but really a fun one just to see the messed up value of lives on the screen).
Love at the end how you don't endorse to do the violence spree to save a loved one.
One thing I didn't know was the continuation codes, I do wonder if those work in the Double Dragon & Kunio-Kun Collection... maybe I have to check that out myself.
