    I really appreciate this sort of content. Yes, it's cringe, but it reminded me of shows when I was a kid. Good work guys.

    This always seemed like a utopian dream, to redevelop that old toxic wasteland and make it a healthy, pleasant place to stay. Yet here we are. I also hope one day they will make it easier to access Tommy Thompson park, and revitalize the Hearn power plant.

    Unless there are enforcable restrictions, whoever gets one of those "affordable housing" units, as defined by CMHC, will immediately turn around and sublet them for the true market rent which is currently around $2000 per month for a one-bedroom apartment. A monthly rent that will still be well out of reach for most people. Like the rest of harbourfront this is just another place to build $1 million+ condos. But hey, at least there'll be another park for people to sleep in.

    Could you please replace the utilitarian street lights with decorative ones? Perhaps the signature 'Olivio' light? I've seen some new street lights installed on Villiers Island next to the beautiful new bridges. They look very ugly and are not fitting for this beautiful new island, and I generally don't like them anywhere. I also saw that, in the Promontory Park renderings, utilitarian lights will be used inside the park. Could you please change course and use better public realm furniture?

    Has Waterfront Toronto addressed the concerns about Sidewalk Labs bailing-out on it's proposed project?
    Have developers, commercial partners and government authorities pulled-back on findings due to COVID-19?
    Does Waterfront Toronto anticipate delays to the $1.25-billion Port Lands Flood Protection project, targeting completion by 2024?

    • @WaterfrontToronto
      @WaterfrontToronto  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for your inquiry! Waterfront Toronto released this statement following withdrawal of Sidewalk Labs from the Quayside project: quaysideto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Waterfront-Toronto-Statement-May-7-2020.pdf.
      A tremendous opportunity exists at Quayside, and we remain committed to the careful and collaborative development of an innovative community. The project team is currently reflecting on all that we have learned through our work and engagement on the project to date as we reconsider plans for Quayside. All that we have heard from the public continues to inform our approach to creating a community at Quayside. Visit QuaysideTO.ca to learn about next steps on the project as they come available.
      As for the Port Lands, we continue to work towards project completion in 2024. You can follow the construction progress by following Rocky @TheRockRipper on twitter as we begin to excavate the future river valley, or visit PortLandsTO.ca/construction/ for the latest construction notices and photo updates.

    Wow 20% "affordable". That's a game changer!

    • @WaterfrontToronto
      @WaterfrontToronto  5 лет назад +6

      Hi Jesse. We didn’t get into detail in this video, but we’d be happy to chat more about this if you have concerns. Here’s a bit more info if you’re interested. The definition of “affordable” housing is broad. In this context, we’re referring to our mandate that 20 per cent of units be available at or below the Average Market Rent (as determined by the annual Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Rental Market Report) on a permanent or long-term basis. The plan for Villiers Island (which is the community that will develop on the new island created by the new river) is to build a mix of affordable and family-friendly housing. To achieve that goal, the Villiers Island Precinct Plan (adopted by Toronto City Council in 2017) includes an affordable housing strategy. At minimum, 20% of housing built on public land will be permanent and long-term affordable rental housing. We want to continue to set new standards (and follow through on that game-changer claim!) which is why we’re continuing to work with the City and the other levels of government to find ways to create broader affordability. In cases where we own the land, Waterfront Toronto is able to require our development partners to deliver on that mandate. In some cases, through government funding, units have been provided at deeper levels of affordability - for example, social housing built in the West Don Lands.

      @@WaterfrontToronto This is a city of 4 million people and 40% don't own the homes we live in. Our planning committees need to be much more ambitious with community housing. The arts / music communities are being gentrified out of town.

    • @jasonschannel
      @jasonschannel 5 лет назад +3

      @@jesseyules Agreed. Quick searching: The CANADA MORTGAGE AND HOUSING CORPORATION RENTAL MARKET REPORT GTA (2018) puts the average rent at $1,359, $16,308 annually. A 2018 article in The Star ("Toronto is segregated by race and income. ...") has charts showing 48% of the population as low income, average $32,000. Based on this, "affordable" means half of their salary on rent? I guess it's "affordable" for middle or high income people vs. the most vulnerable.
      I'm no expert, so I may not be reading this data is perfectly as possible, but I worry this conclusion is closer to the truth than not: More and more Torontonians are in trouble, and our legislators, regulators, planners, whoever-the people meant to be drawing the plans for a sustainable future-aren't doing enough to reverse this negative trend.

    • @jesseyules
      @jesseyules 5 лет назад +1

      @@jasonschannel Agreed. Also, the average rent is now closer to $2000 now (fo a 1 bedroom). The half of citizens with 1M plus mortgages are passing on their monthly fees to the poor. Or just converting the units to Air BnB.

    • @jesseyules
      @jesseyules 5 лет назад +1

      I'd really like to see a plan where an audit is taken of all the renters in the city, and then a community is designed specifically to move those renters into a new units they can own, at cost. A condo unit is roughly 30K in materials and labour. The high prices we see today are from real estate speculation.

Need to go elsewhere to find project details, including what was there, challenges and opportunities with the change, projected schedules, financial transparency (who is paying for this, who benefits and a more clear insight on the agenda at play.)

    They've been reuploading the same stupid video for years and talking for years yet it still looks the same. Love how a project like this takes 20 to 30 years to complete in Canada, while China can do it in 2 years. I'll have to wait until I'm 60 before I see any of this. Everything in Canada is so damn slow. You can thank the small population for that.

      They've been working day and night (literally running excavators at night) to get this done. You can walk or drive through the area now on Commissioners St. and Cherry St. to see the new bridges watch the transformation of the landscape. Granted, getting streetcar service to the area will take the better part of a decade, but breaking ground on housing is not far off now and things are moving along.
