Would you consider taking on a mountain ultramarathon? 🤔
I haven't gotten to that level yet
They are the best... Including when you don't finish them.
I always go with the right expectations.
In 2019 I knew that I have little chance of finishing. I was tapped out (not enough training). And I finished exhausted. It was one of the most happy memories in the mountains.
I came back in 2021 and I finished Mozart 100.
When you talking mountains trails of 80k up, many things can happen. But if you start without being in a reasonable shape (for the event) then just enjoy the mountains and do your best.
My advise is come back next year and finish what you started.
My first is on August 27. I appreciate this video and James’ inspiration.
Doing a 50k on 5th Nov👍
I started running with 43 a bit more than a year ago and finished my first glacier marathon about a month ago and placed in the middle of the field. With the right (!) training and motivation go can absolutely go from zero to something you could have never imagined. Kudos to James for giving the 101k a shot. This race is no joke and getting 60k of it done in itself is an achievement.
I think this video is one of the most important ones the channel has posted in a long time. Yeah sure, it's great to see people run 17 minute 5K's and knock ridiculous amounts of time off their PB's, but this, this right here, is what running is about. Push yourself, find your limits and push beyond them. Fight, improve, overcome. Thank you James for sharing this story with us, because I feel it has more weight and significance than a dozen "what kit should you use" videos. Sure, we need those, but I think more of us need these, to keep us grounded and help us remember the struggle. I'm a seasoned runner and would never try a 51K, let alone an ultra and on a mountain to boot. So, you're still an elite athlete, and an inspiration, even if you didn't reach the goal you set for yourself, this time.
Thank you Schvenn, we're really glad you enjoyed this video 😊 It's important to show the races that don't go to plan just as much as the races that do. Was there any particular part you felt you could relate to?
@@runningchannel the disappointment he felt and then dealing with it to continue on, regardless. I attempted a 14 mile run earlier this year and had to stop at 8 miles due to knee pain. That meant I had to walk home, which was almost worse. So, I can relate to the disappointment. We never give up, though. We simply pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and train smarter for the next time. Endurance of spirit is just as important as body. This video demonstrated that.
I can relate to this so much, just done a 35 miler in Peak District, at cp2 I told them I couldn’t run anymore I was done in. They chatted to me gave a a boost and I carried on but struggled all the way. It was so much harder than I expected. my own my mind was my worst enemy.
Well said!
"You don't know what your limits are unless you push them" - James. An inspiration to all.
👏👏
I did a fart and it choked everyone in the room - "me an embarrassing moment"
Guys, the Eiger 101 is over 6000 METRES of elevation gain (not feet) and I think that's an important fact to get right! Very well done James.
Definitely something that people overlook. Given that youre supposed to acclimatise 1000 m rise per day, I think it's incredible people complete the 101 at a walking pace, let alone by running.
holyyy. 18000 ft. I struggle with 300 bro
This title is wrong. This race did not break you, James. You pushed through fear and doubt. You crossed that finish line with your head up and you will race again. I’m proud of you!
“Let’s get down this road and see what happens.” That is the heart of ultra running. It is something people may face at any distance but grows to dominate the view of people who succeed in pushing the boundaries of their endurance. Thank you for sharing!
Very true Christopher, we’ve got to keep pushing ourselves and what we think we can do 💪 have you competed in ultras?
@@runningchannel yes, a few. Did my first two 100-milers last year. The first was an “easy 100” to qualify for my real goal race: Cruel Jewel 100. CJ100 is a pretty gnarly race and at around 80 miles and 25,000 feet of gain into it I nearly ground to a halt because I got behind on hydration and fueling. James’s apparent despair as he leaned on his poles evoked some raw memories. I didn’t have the cutoff pressure, and managed to keep moving through to the finish. But that is where the amount that remains (26 miles and 7,000 feet of climb for me, at that point) was too much to contemplate and you just have to “go down this road and see what happens” as James said.
It is so odd that we choose to do this! I’ve got a 64-mile trail race (Twisted Branch) coming up in two weeks. James will get that 101km if he still wants it. We’re all “broken” in our own ways, but no less powerful because of it.
As someone who is still fat heavier than I would like to be but have gone from not being able to run 5 minutes to running a half marathon, I really feel the mixed emotions of pushing your limits even when it means not hitting what you wanted. A huge inspiration, as this channel consistently is.
Thanks Connor, really glad you enjoyed the video! Congratulations on the half marathon 🎉 that’s a huge achievement! Have you got any other goals for this year?
@@runningchannel thanks! The Cardiff half in October, my goals are: 2:30 finish, faster than last time, finish. In that order!
You are definitely not a fraud.Speaking as someone with a crippling fear of heights I have nothing but admiration for you and the way you confront these high places. There is no way I could do these events.Well done!👏
You can't have failed if you have inspired others, and reading the comments, and adding my own, James has definitely inspired. 💗
That race didn't break you, that's the race that made you! Tough times are what make us stronger. You smashed it!
I started running over a year ago when I was 20 stone, and now challenging myself with a half marathon in the fall. I don't know that ultras are in my future, especially at heights like that. I couldn't make it along that walk at any pace. Bravo, James. Know that you're inspiring others to take on what they never thought possible.
Congratulations on your amazing journey 👏 and good luck for the half marathon! Is this going to be your first one?
@@runningchannel Yes, it'll be my first. So far up to 16k/10 mile long runs.
Just did my first sub 2 hour halfmarathon an hour ago. I believe in you, everyone can make it :)
Very emotional watch. You’re very inspirational James
What I love about this channel, is how relatable it is! In my eyes you’re a winner, James.
James, I hear you on the fear of heights. That would have been my DNF. Getting over that is a win in its self.
15:55 left me crying. Its such a beautiful message and really resonated with me.
It takes a strong spirit to reveal how deeply things can hurt us. Oftentimes we runners cover with humor but sometimes a person has to embrace that full gamut of feelings. We runners certainly experience that, especially on those longer efforts. Thanks for bringing us on your journey, James.
James. You are amazing. I was a wheelchair user 4 years ago and also weighed 21st. I’m now 14st5lbs and no longer use a wheelchair and I’m half way through my London marathon training plan! I’ve got got no idea if I’ll meet the marathon cutoff but I’m going to try my best. We got this!!
I love how brutally honest your videos are. Keep up the great videos.
Mate you’re a total Monster!! You pushed and pushed. As a big bloke seeing someone far , far ahead on the same journey is inspirational. And seeing that it’s ok if it doesn’t work out, it’s all part of the unknown is also amazing to see, for a chap on the Telly to go out hit the lint and be honest and grind out a result is magic. Thanks fella. 👍
James, that was AMAZING!! Thank you so much for sharing!
There are too many runners who just share the high points and make everything look easy. Sharing the lows and the times it doesn't go well is extremely tough and brave but it shows another level of strength.
I am in training for my first over 50K in December (two years ago the thought of a 10K run terrified me!) and it is videos like this that I find incredibly inspirational. So again, a massive, masive thank you.
Always forward!
This race did not break you! I can’t imagine attempting a race like this and having to film too 😮 you are an inspiration! Thank you for your vulnerability and honesty 😊
Oh James! That was so inspiring. I think I cried with you. You are a star ⭐️ in my eyes. To keep pushing 🎉🎉
Wow, what an awesome video. Just awe inspiring. James, I salute you. It was a privilege to join you on your 101km mountain quest. It was really heart felt and showed the real ups and downs of your feat. I know it's not what you set out to do but finishing 51(63) km is still brilliant.
There will be another time and that's what keeps us going.
I look forward towards you cracking the 101km barrier.
Just finished my 22K training day for the London Marathon - It may only be a fraction of what you did but I felt your emotions 😢 I kept hoping you’d keep going but also inspired how you pushed to your limits ❤️ you have fear of heights yet you still went on that cliff walk 😱😱😱
You achieved more than you think you did. You also inspired so many of us to move forward and push to our limits. Thanks for the strength James! ❤️
love this comment. congrats to you!! amazing achievement.
Congratulations on your 22k! 🎉 That’s such a tough part of the training 🥵 Thank you for such a lovely comment! We’ll make sure your words of love and support get back to James ❤️ good luck for London!
@@earthwitheva thanks 😊
@@runningchannel ❤️❤️❤️
Never regret anything. That was inspirational. Everyone hits the reset button over and over again but sometimes like a machine the pistons just won't fire. I'm running my first ultra next Feb and have just started my training but I have taken an awful lot from this video. Well done James, we are all very proud of you
What an inspiration, James pushes himself always. I never wonder why he does this, he does it because he can, and he wants to. His dialogue is just wonderful, even if at times a bit heart wrenching. Wanted to give him a hug at the end. What a champ.
Been waiting weeks for this. Lovely stuff. What a race that was - fair play - I think I even cheered you over the finish line. Trying and failing is far better than never trying in the first place. I had a similar experience to you in my first marathon and it taught me to reframe failure and use it. You either use it for fuel or leave the trauma to fester. I don't think we can truly taste success if we never fail. You need moments like these to fully appreciate achievements. Great vid (also that Faulhorn climb was absolutely brutal, I heard the one at the second half of the 101k up past Wengen was even worse . . . )
"Always forward. Forward always" Brilliant!
That was amazing! Good on James for trying the 101k! You'll get there!
Incredible effort James! I love that philosophy of 'Do you what you can't,' and the bridge section embodied that - tired, terrified, but ticked off nonetheless. Amazing.
I am intrigued by an ultra. I watched Anna train and complete her ultra on the channel, which was so inspiring, but the time commitment is the real hurdle. Working on my marathon training though, thanks to TRC! Congratulations to James for all he has accomplished!
It does take a lot of time and dedication! But the pay off is amazing 😁 which marathon are you training for?
@@runningchannel Sri Chinmoy in New York State. Great people and affordable. 😊
I’m training for my next one right now - the time commitment is real! 👀
Wow, this was so hard to watch, my heart shriked and I almost cried several times. Thanks James and thanks TRC for showing us vulnerability. It is so hard now at days to ackowledge that we are just humans, we are not perfect and we may not always get away with our goals, and that is OK because we have put ourselves there and we will keep going, no matter how many ups and downs, we'll keep pushing. Thanks again James, you are a star and an inspiration!!!!!!!!
You are amazing James! You push forward, everytime … you guys are true inspiration to the likes of me who struggle through illness, and sometimes fail, but try and always get back out there … Well Done!!! and Thankyou for sharing the rawness of this race xx
Absolutely amazing. Congratulations on pushing yourself and inspiring others. Really excited for my first 50k next month. This channel is great. Keep up the amazing work. Ultra running gives another dimension toing distance running in term of emotion.
Great mantra! That landscape was amazing. Chasing cut offs is soo stressful, I hate them. Oh wow that cliff walk is stomach churning, arghh it’s bouncing! 😂
I feel like I’m faking it on every big mountain race I’ve done, always finish near the back. But yes! It’s all about just seeing what you can actually do.
Aw felt your pain, gutted for you. Another 6k when you’re that empty is huge!
That 62km makes my 30km today seem not so bad.
Respect!
Thanks for all your amazing support Stephen! Have you got any mountain races coming up?
You are amazing James! Such an inspirational video even though you must have hated nearly every minute! Keep pushing forward!...Such a great reminder that even though races may not go the way we want we need to keep on trying!
I just finished my first ultra (50k!) about two weeks ago on July 31. Watching James go through all the emotions, I was reliving my race all over again, especially because it was so fresh. I literally cried with him when he realized he would be timed out of the 100k and I could feel the pain in my feet again then.
I think he finally put in to words why I wanted to start running ultras, I want to see where my limits are and what my new level of "ridiculous" and "impossible" are, to the point where I'm pretty sure I'm going to run a 50 miler and a 100k next year.
I know one day I'll be timed out, especially because I'm not the fastest runner, but when I am, I'm going to think of James and the attitude he has through all of this and the words he said. Such an inspiration, always, James!
Bravo James! Congrats on finding the courage to step over the start line and take the challenge instead of staying in your comfort zone. Well done! 🏅
I love the honesty of this channel. You're awesome James.
These are the videos that inspire me, the struggle is real and not like most of videos on you tube of people acting like its easy and boasting their ego. Running is hard and sometimes it doesn’t go to plan but you went for it and you will come again.
You are a winner, James!! Thank you for sharing this with all of us.
Such an inspiration James. This race certainly might have broke you at the time, but it will have definitely made you stronger and more determined moving forward. Truly awesome 👏
Well done James. Echoing another commenter, I too think this is one of the most important videos this channel has posted in a while. None of us want a DNF, but a DNF is a possibility for every race we start. When, not if, it happens to you, it's important to mourn it, process it, learn from it, and get back out there. And I have no doubt we will see James back out there!
James this was very relatable. In my last marathon I had a hip injury but still ran. At mile 24 I walked. I also cried. Thank you for showing us your variability. Hopefully for both of us we will have a redemption race in the future.
Oh wow dude, that is a monster of a race. I guess the race will be there for another time - keep up this inspirational journey.
I was crying watching this, a very emotional watch. All I can say is you did your utmost best and no one can deny you that 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You are awesome for doing this ☺️! Very inspiring! Thanks James
Thank you wearing your heart on your sleeve about this race. Your taking yourself out of your comfort zone, these things are far from easy.
Thanks Robert, James did amazingly well 🎉 would you enjoy more videos about ultras?
I love the honesty, the openness about the pain & disappointment from James in this video . I also love the fact that TRC is about real people running and their struggles at all levels & distances - it just makes it all so relatable. I'm on a similar journey to James - I lost 25kg & started running last year and am just trying to find out how far I can push myself by taking on distances I never dreamt were possible. James' thoughts on being an imposter and should he even be at the race really resonated with me - it's a thought I often have & it reappears with each new challenge I take on. I'm taking on my 1st 100 miler next month & am excited & terrified in equal measures. I was 53 when I started running, having avoided exercise & sports for many years - but with running something just clicked & TRC has been a great companion throughout my running journey 😊
Well, that was a really amazing video. From the content to the way it was shot and edited - The Running Channel do this sort of thing exceptionally well! I really felt for James at the end and I think we all felt the emotion with him. Running is a really amazing sport! Much love Rob
Ps. Is there a video on Tribe 4 coming? Thanks Rob
You are an inspiration James! Thank you for taking us on your physical and spiritual journey through these high mountains and all of those long kilometers!
What an inspirational journey, thnx for sharing this brutal reality check and hope you keep cracking on
Massive effort!!!!!! well done! i dnf'd up on the 36km one in 2019 .... i have a feeling we will both be back, see you around the village :D
Looking forward to seeing you at future events Ian! Are trail races your favourite?
@@runningchannel Actually i fell out of love with it after 2019, took up rock climbing, then fractured an ankle.... but after this video i feel inspired!
Well done James. A pleasure to watch and an inspiration as always.
A very honest account. There's so much on social media that is curated to look 'great'. The other day I was doing interval work and wanted to give up early my body was in pain, I wasn't happy and I was losing the mental game. James, you've been very honest about the ups and downs, what it's really like. Thank you
That wasn't a Fail, because that was the Biggest achievement of your Life
👏👏👏 PURE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL STRENGTH!
Amazingly powerful video, proper got to me that.
Well done James, you should be proper proud of yourself.
Keep fighting the good fight.
I really felt for you in that. Given the heat and the huge change in altitude, as well as that darn hung walkway, you did really well James. You are a true inspiration!
I love your efforts, I feel your pain, I know your struggles. I’ll root for you!
Always Forward forward always 💪🏼
Well done, James. You are an inspiration to thousands and you should be incredibly proud of yourself and the lives of people you are changing. Bravo.
This blew me away and is a tremendous inspiration for me, an old guy about to try to run his first marathon in October! Thank you!
Fantastic video! It is one of the best from The Running Channel. Well done James!
Thanks for the video, your emotions and how you show how hard this race is. Keep going and hopefully you will finish the race another time🙌
I am a relative newbie to running and I started from a place not unlike James. Overweight and then requiring a heart procedure to be able to even get up the stairs without angina pains. The Running channel videos have kept me educated and nudged me forward inch by inch to new challenges. But this one and others from James make me think that challenges I had previously only thought of as impossible adventures are mine for the taking. 2023 has a half marathon and a marathon booked in. 2024 I have mates already talking about Run2Paris. So Thanks James for reminding us and encouraging us all to dare to dream and then to chase them too. Always forward.
you have such a beautiful spirit of perseverance. this is a motivating story in so many ways. thank you for sharing this the way you did.
Wow! Very moving and truly thought-provoking and inspiring James!
Inspirational for those of us that would never be first or even win an age category, but still get out there looking for challenges to push ourselves out of our comfort zones and prove people wrong! Well done for an honest view of how hard it can be to break barriers.
This video is both epic and very inspiring to watch. Loved it!
THIS is why I enjoy this channel so much. Well done!
Thanks Rick! Would you take on an ultra?
Thanks for this honest video! I know how it can feel, the exhaustion, the frustration... Not all trail runs are wonderful and for instagram. Misery is real at times! And feeling fake or out of place is also real, but if you do it, you're not fake!!! You're a hero! Big hug!
Wow what a journey, and what a race, James you are an inspiration, always forward !
Big respect for the attempt. Always push yourself. Sometimes it pays off. Also, know when to stop. I didn't and now have an achilles injury that wont repair. Still "run" daily but not at the same intensity and miss the buzz of a new PB or segement PB. Do everything but take care.
The roller-coaster of emotions on these types of races when pushing towards your absolute boundaries is impossible to explain unless you have lived it. I salute you James. 👍 Did my first 50km Ultra a few months back as a personal challenge & fundraising event. Next one in October. I know exactly what you mean about seeing how far you can push yourself. Good luck with the next one 💪
You’re right Phil, ultras are very mentally challenging and unless you’ve done one it’s hard to imagine. Good luck for October!! 👏 where is the ultra?
An awesome video: well done on starting and achieving what you could on that particular day.
James ur amazing & u did an awesome job & ur definitely an inspiration for others. Well done on keeping pushing forward.
Need more James + ultras content. He is the best
I have been running over 20 years and would never have had the courage to even attempt the 51km. Truly brave of you to go for that 101, an astounding achievement for you to have completed more than half of that and really inspires me to challenge myself in my running journey. We all miss our goals sometimes whether they be distance or time, but you have the perfect mantra ... Always Forward. Thank you for this.
that was amazing , proud of you james ....
Thanks for this video, I needed this for motivation. Next time I run and I'm ready to stop and give up, I'll have you in mind to keep going.
Wow this is one of the best videos I have ever seen and I've been following you guys since just before TRC blows up. I like the fact this includes when things don't go to plan and the journey to get to the finish line. Please include vlog type of videos from time to time, to give a break from scripted videos - they are great but needs to be broken up in chilled (or not chilled in this case!) videos. James you have my support and I would keep moving forward until I find my limit. Running the LM but still my long runs are only 8 miles with 50 days to go so hoping it doesn't go too wrong but if I keep moving forward then that is enough.
WOW ! Most inspirational video i have ever seen! you can be so proud of yourswlf James, i certainly am! Always forward, forward always!
You've done amazing! Please be proud how far you've come.
Awesome effort mate…well done absolute Respect
Brilliant Video! James is inspirational. I always love his videos as he honest and just a normal person (if any of us that do ultras are normal!). That bridge thing would be scary as F. I also hate heights lol.
Well done James! You did so well. It takes courage to start these races. You did amazing.
I ran & completed the E101 this year and can confirm this was an extremely hard but amazing event with stunning views. Complete respect for your achievement and proves that we all need to push ourselves beyond what we know that we could achieve.
Inspiration and motivation. 6months into my journey and starting to look at bigger challenges than 10K! Inspirational.
That is awesome!
Great video. James is an inspiration. So much of this experience relates to my own when doing ultras. They’re relentless, brutal and mentally exhausting. It would be so easy to team up with some like Kylian Jornet and make it look easy. Thank you for sharing a much more relatable experience.
James ur amazing - this is one of the best videos Iv seen documenting the reality of running - thanku James for putting urself out there for others to watch - this is what really pushing urself really looks like hats of to you sir ur an inspiration 🫶
Almost a year later and this is still my favourite TRC video of all time. It came out last year during my final preparations for Jungfrau Marathon and really helped me reframe a potential DNF in my mind as having done exactly what I set out to do - find my limit.
I did actually finish that one and signed up for Eiger 51 this year, which happens tomorrow. Rewatched today to get me in the right headspace for the race. Let's see if I find my limit this time!
Brilliant video, by real people keeping it real. Well done James and well done the running channel!
Inspirational James!!! Thank you for the honest video!!!
You didnt fail.
You just deferred your pass.
Well done.
Inspirational.
Love this! Thank you James for being so honest and true. ❤
Fantastic effort James! Well done! At least you were there, on the mountain, pushing as hard as you could, what more can you do?
Exactly! Is this kind of race something you would ever consider taking on?
@@runningchannel The longest trail race I've finished was 68k, I thought that was my limit, but as James said it's good to push that limit and see how much further you can go.
Well done James for your immense effort 👏🏻 and for an honest and insightful film ☺️
I completed the North Downs Way 100 today and for the last 30 miles or so was chasing cut-offs, for the first time ever in a race. It was so much pressure and the most stressed I’ve ever been while running, so I really appreciate how this must have felt. Also, the last stage of NDW is also 6k and it is absolutely a VERY long way!
Incredible achievement James!! Inspiring stuff xxx
wow what a guy. Had me filling up watching a honest true guy doing what we all love,, Running. I have entered a 34 mile ultra trail in Wales in October and even though I am shivering at the thought I ALSO CANT WAIT. You video James just brings it all back to me
Epic struggle. By any measure you’re a winner James. Much respect.
Beautiful video, thank you for posting. I was in the Eiger 35km that day. Stunning and brutally challenging course.
James your story is one of achievement. I also started to run to lose weight after stopping smoking. I have reached my weight goal, its 10 years on and running is my happy place. A 50km ultra is my next target. Your mantra will sit with me. Their is no way i could have walked that cliff bridge. I am sure you will reach a 101 and the lesson learned from this experience will help you through.. well done 👏
