They are the best... Including when you don't finish them.
I always go with the right expectations.
In 2019 I knew that I have little chance of finishing. I was tapped out (not enough training). And I finished exhausted. It was one of the most happy memories in the mountains.
I came back in 2021 and I finished Mozart 100.
When you talking mountains trails of 80k up, many things can happen. But if you start without being in a reasonable shape (for the event) then just enjoy the mountains and do your best.
My advise is come back next year and finish what you started.

I started running with 43 a bit more than a year ago and finished my first glacier marathon about a month ago and placed in the middle of the field. With the right (!) training and motivation go can absolutely go from zero to something you could have never imagined. Kudos to James for giving the 101k a shot. This race is no joke and getting 60k of it done in itself is an achievement.

I think this video is one of the most important ones the channel has posted in a long time. Yeah sure, it's great to see people run 17 minute 5K's and knock ridiculous amounts of time off their PB's, but this, this right here, is what running is about. Push yourself, find your limits and push beyond them. Fight, improve, overcome. Thank you James for sharing this story with us, because I feel it has more weight and significance than a dozen "what kit should you use" videos. Sure, we need those, but I think more of us need these, to keep us grounded and help us remember the struggle. I'm a seasoned runner and would never try a 51K, let alone an ultra and on a mountain to boot. So, you're still an elite athlete, and an inspiration, even if you didn't reach the goal you set for yourself, this time.

Thank you Schvenn, we're really glad you enjoyed this video 😊 It's important to show the races that don't go to plan just as much as the races that do. Was there any particular part you felt you could relate to?

@@runningchannel the disappointment he felt and then dealing with it to continue on, regardless. I attempted a 14 mile run earlier this year and had to stop at 8 miles due to knee pain. That meant I had to walk home, which was almost worse. So, I can relate to the disappointment. We never give up, though. We simply pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and train smarter for the next time. Endurance of spirit is just as important as body. This video demonstrated that.

“Let’s get down this road and see what happens.” That is the heart of ultra running. It is something people may face at any distance but grows to dominate the view of people who succeed in pushing the boundaries of their endurance. Thank you for sharing!

    • @christopherbrand5360
      @christopherbrand5360 2 года назад +1

@@runningchannel yes, a few. Did my first two 100-milers last year. The first was an “easy 100” to qualify for my real goal race: Cruel Jewel 100. CJ100 is a pretty gnarly race and at around 80 miles and 25,000 feet of gain into it I nearly ground to a halt because I got behind on hydration and fueling. James’s apparent despair as he leaned on his poles evoked some raw memories. I didn’t have the cutoff pressure, and managed to keep moving through to the finish. But that is where the amount that remains (26 miles and 7,000 feet of climb for me, at that point) was too much to contemplate and you just have to “go down this road and see what happens” as James said.
It is so odd that we choose to do this! I’ve got a 64-mile trail race (Twisted Branch) coming up in two weeks. James will get that 101km if he still wants it. We’re all “broken” in our own ways, but no less powerful because of it.

I just finished my first ultra (50k!) about two weeks ago on July 31. Watching James go through all the emotions, I was reliving my race all over again, especially because it was so fresh. I literally cried with him when he realized he would be timed out of the 100k and I could feel the pain in my feet again then.
I think he finally put in to words why I wanted to start running ultras, I want to see where my limits are and what my new level of "ridiculous" and "impossible" are, to the point where I'm pretty sure I'm going to run a 50 miler and a 100k next year.
I know one day I'll be timed out, especially because I'm not the fastest runner, but when I am, I'm going to think of James and the attitude he has through all of this and the words he said. Such an inspiration, always, James!

I found myself begging James not to give up on 101k, and then remembered how close I came to giving up in the last 1k of a 5k on Sunday. I can only imagine what he was up against, but I can see he gave it all he had. He showed a lot of character.

Wow this is one of the best videos I have ever seen and I've been following you guys since just before TRC blows up. I like the fact this includes when things don't go to plan and the journey to get to the finish line. Please include vlog type of videos from time to time, to give a break from scripted videos - they are great but needs to be broken up in chilled (or not chilled in this case!) videos. James you have my support and I would keep moving forward until I find my limit. Running the LM but still my long runs are only 8 miles with 50 days to go so hoping it doesn't go too wrong but if I keep moving forward then that is enough.

Big respect for the attempt. Always push yourself. Sometimes it pays off. Also, know when to stop. I didn't and now have an achilles injury that wont repair. Still "run" daily but not at the same intensity and miss the buzz of a new PB or segement PB. Do everything but take care.

  • @dresden_slowjog

What a feat, James! Perhaps one has pushed it only hard enough if one has to cry. For whatever reason, victory, pain, humiliation, sense of accomplishment, pushing through, or for being sensible and quit, for joy, beating all odds, having defied a looming cut-off or succumbed to one. In my 2 years of running I've never cried once so obviously I've neither pushed hard enough distance-wise nor sustained a sudden bad injury. As a medium-aged beginner I'd rather stop (reroute to 50k and retry later) than push through. Let's see when my cracking point will come. It will. And then I'll think of James and his video. Thank you. Btw, the lovely choice of score, A/B-rolls and cutting impressed me!

Often, it's the cutoffs that make the challenge. In JP, I first encountered cutoffs on a Half Marathon (which required sub 5:30min/k) . I now see them as a filter by organisers to stop the (fresh and) foolhardy, and to push those challenging themselves to difficult, but achievable goals. I would always advise challengers to work to beat those cutoffs before anything else. Most full marathons here have a 5hr limit, with multiple cutoffs. My first 10 marathons were always about getting past the last cutoff at 40km. James has found a barrier, and he will knock it down like he has done so many before. Time to analyse what went wrong and to build for the next time. Well done. For being a challenger. It's what we all have been and continue to be, in some way or another.

There have been many Ultra's that I've done where I start thinking "I can't do this. I'm doing to DNF." And that brings on the emotions. The wanting to cry, but trying to hold it in. Seeing that on James's face brings back all those memories and emotions for me. Then you do the deep breathe. If I'm going to DNF then I still have to get to the next aid station. But when I get there, I feed off the energy and forget I was going to pull out. This race looks fantastic and awful and challenging all in one. It is one I would definitely love to do. Especially that cliff walk think. I love heights.

I completed the North Downs Way 100 today and for the last 30 miles or so was chasing cut-offs, for the first time ever in a race. It was so much pressure and the most stressed I’ve ever been while running, so I really appreciate how this must have felt. Also, the last stage of NDW is also 6k and it is absolutely a VERY long way!

I’d also like to give credit to the channel as I really like the way it embraces telling stories like this. The channel isn’t about elite runners or every video looking smooth and seamless, it’s about telling it how it is, and that reality is what makes the content so relatable for us viewers!
