Most people are taking 5 to 6 hours to do this dress.... And there are planning out everything in advance. You however started the pattern with fabric selection on the fly, checking the bias tape, the actual sewing .... you did it in the true Spirit of the Walk Away Dress .... start after breakfast finish before lunch. So if there is points for extra credit and true effort....you win.
LOL. It was fun for sure. I am enjoying watching others creations. I was definitely just trying to see what I had and what I could do. Definitely not my usual choice for colors for me, but I absolutely love the practicality of this dress and intent on making more. This was my 2nd one. My first was for a Valentine's dress that was made using the "new" pattern. Fit was a bit off on that one around the bust. I definitely prefer this pattern. Just a bit longer.....;)
I just realized something...the pattern set you up to fail when. It mentions "hang the skirt overnight" ...but you're supposed to be able to walk away to a luncheon. Hmmm my over-thinks-it thing is active.
I like your version of the walkaway dress - it's very flattering. If I were to make it (hah!), I'd make the main skirt much longer (my preference), but keep the wrap around skirt at its original length, so it's like a giant peplum. Thanks for sharing - I've loved seeing everyone's version of this dress - and the different ways everyone works!
ooohhh!!!! that sounds adorable! great idea! I definitely prefer a longer skirt. I'm 5'8", so many of these "original" styles are a little on the short side for me.
I'm so glad I found you here, it's such a joy and comfort in watching you sew while I'm dealing with covid 😅😫 and I don't say that often because not everyone has that comfort vibe as you do. 🥰
Prayers for a quick recovery! I've had it twice. First time was before Covid shut down and it was 4 days of excrutiating pain. The 2nd time was not bad-just tired. Praying you have a lighter Covid yuck! I'm so glad you feel comfort from me! Blessings Roya!
@@TheFreckledLassSeamstress awwww, tysm for the prayer 🙏 looking forward to more of your videos, but of course at your own pace...no need for rushing as I know it's not easy to make videos.
I have a 53" bust, so I decided to wait to do the walkaway dress because I'm not confident increasing the sizing by that much. But seeing you sew this dress was really helpful. I feel more confident about attempting it at all. Thank you. Also, I subscribed. I'm really interested in seeing your other projects. Blessed be.
Yay! I'm so glad that it has helped boost your confidence! A mock up is the best place to start. I'm excited to hear if you try it and what your results are! You got this! Blessings
Try it anyways. My bust is 52. I did make 2 mock ups, and I did still end up with gaping. Although I think some of that was from not stay stitching around the neckline!
i have this pattern also and attempted it years ago when i was a diffrent shape and size. after seeing your video on simple bust adjusment im going to try again. thank you
I have a 57" bust and a belly. I started to upsize the pattern, but something interfered and I haven't started... yet, I will get it done, I'm just not sure when that will be. LOL. Very good at getting it done in under 4 hours. I'm just hoping to get it done. Hopefully before the New Year.
I’ve watched a few now. It was fun to watch your walkaway emerge from under your presser foot. I adore the pink and grey, and the addition of fabric panels at the front. I’ve been pondering this dress for a plus size lady and wondering if it would make a nice tunic top. I think you showed me. Yes, it would.
thank you! It's not something I would usually use for me, but I do actually like it. Super comfy and nice to wear around the house when I'm cleaning or lounging for sure
Thank you so much! Lol. I was wondering if I would regret the dive in, but I knew if I didn't, I wouldn't get it done. The material was a quilters cotton, probably Joann's from years ago. It was a sweet print. I don't wear gray much, but thought it would be a nice one around the house.
@@TheFreckledLassSeamstress I really love it. I got my pattern from Stephanie, but beginning sewing got to get it printed. The way you just did it and made the thing, is how I was taught to sew. So it was glorious not to see all that blocking and making a mockup....oh lordy, I have to many squirrels 😁
Currently making this for my real world size 4 sister, pattern size she's between an 8 and 10. I'd have had it done in 3 hours and 30 minutes had I remember to buy the 3rd pack of bias when I was in the city last week. As it stands, I'm 22 inches short. I'll be putting ties on the front (for in the back) as I won't be near to adjust elastic if I guess wrong on length. And the front will be loops and buttons. I've had this pattern sitting down in the sewing room for over a year, just waiting. Then everyone started sewing it online. I'm almost glad I waited as I am catching all the glaring errors in the commercial pattern before I made them myself. I wish I had the 1952 version of this pattern. I spent more time putting in her hem and doing little finishing touches like finishing the inside seams and top stitching that I did sewing it together. I did make it longer, and she does plan on wearing a little T or tank under it, but I still see it as something to wear with leggings around the house. I have no idea if I'll bother making it for myself, as I have a 48 inch bust and a 38 inch waist, and 48 inch hips. I'm just a BIG hourglass. OH and it does look better on with a proper foundation slip allowing it to flare, and a good ironing and a starch job on the dress works wonders.
Nice job on your sisters dress! I can completely relate to the bias tape. I was cutting bias tape just to have enough of the one color LOL. Just an idea about for you. If you just size the front piece for your bust and size the back for your waist, the skirt should still fit for your hips as I think it is a half circle skirt with quite a bit of fullness. Just an idea. I completely agree on the foundation slip and iron/starch. LOL. This will be a wash and wear house dress for me, so I'll bypass on this one. But in the future.... :)
@@TheFreckledLassSeamstress on the upsizing, I've got a true to size bootstrap body double, so I'll be fitting the "Upsized" version on her first and then making a new pattern from that. I know the darts will be wrong and the neck hole FAR too large. I'm already seeing that on other people's videos.
@@TheFreckledLassSeamstress I've been sewing for 42 years. I've made miles of bias tape, but this was a critical point with no fabric at the ranch to match the other arm hole. LOL. Our store only carries 3 packs at a time in any one size or color so I had to wait to get more in (someone had already purchased one pack b4 me).
@@TheFreckledLassSeamstress RIGHT?! It's the wild, wild west out here when it comes to limited supplies and places to get them. HA! I'm usually well stocked, but this material was an odd shade of blue.
This came out really well, especially considering the pattern grading. I always have trouble when I grade something up more than a few inches. I end up with a proportion mess
why thank you. It can definitely be a challenge to grade the pattern up in size. Body proportions can be tricky with each pattern. Some styles just don't work for every body type and that is ok. I recently watched @theclosethistorian rendition and my jaw dropped! She blows my mind with how her mind can take a pattern and fly with it. Again, thank you for the compliment and best of wishes in the future with your pattern grading.
Your dress turned out lovely. I’m almost finished with mine but i ended up adding to the side width of the dress front because i had to raise the arm pit. Unfortunately I didn’t think to add anything to the middle fold so the darts are not far enough apart and the neckline was to big so it got a box pleat but I’m just glad to have finally made it to the bias tape. Lol I guess it will be a wearable mock up.
I see one problem ....you increased the pattern for your bust, but not your height and the back side.... So the back of the dress decide to do a Maya Angelou...it rise. Always consider the finished length compared to a favorite dress that is long enough. I'm tall... every thing is always too short. My mom would tell aim for too long ... (so when patterns didn't cooperate...I was still covered) ...cuz you can remove extra....but not if you don't have extra.
absolutely! great catch! I would definitely increase the length in the future. Thank you! I love "the back of the dress decides to do a Maya Angelou" LOL.
