    I did manage to snag one, which was unexpected. I see it as sort of a sebenza type piece: high end and will last more or less forever. It's been great to bring with me to work with the pb washers. Holds up well to the dusty environment I'm in, and works well with gloves on. I feel like I paid $100 too much for it, but still cheaper than a plain Jane sebenza or inkosi. :Shrug:

    I'm so glad I was able to get one. I absolutely love it. The action broke in stupid buttery smooth. It's the smoothest action out of my spyderco's by a lot. And I have a kapara, Pm2, Domino, spydiechef, drunken, manix 2xl, and smock. The drunken would be the second out of my spidey's. I still kind of wish they would have done this up in a CQI version. Because they've already deviated from the original in so many ways ( blade steel, blade finish, handle finish) If they would have added a lock bar insert and stabilizer I think this would have arguably been the superior one.

    I am a Spyderco fan and am really glad I got one of these. It is an awesome knife and I did not have a problem with the price. With that being said, I put some titanium scales on my m390 PM2 and I like it better than the Bowie for less money. It is my go to m390 titanium Spyderco.

    The large sebenza is without a doubt my favorite edc knife. I hate that it is and I’ve tried to dethrone it but it just hasn’t happened. This to me is like a sebenza that’s just a little bit bigger to make harder use easier. It still follows in that super slicey vein that I love about the sebenza but is definitely more fidgetable with that spidey hole and detent😂 I need one lol

    I picked this up when it dropped and definitely like it but the anodization is not what you would expect for a knife of this quality, and PRICE! It is easily scratched and has major discoloration even when cleaned up from all of your hand oils, etc. I may re-anodize it another color since it's a keeper but definitely priced out of hype and not build quality, materials, etc. This is an M390 and Ti handle Spyderco, it should be in the $250 to $300 range at the most but you pay for the hype I guess.

    I love the Slysz bowie. Youre right. You cant reduce a knife to its materials. Many knives are much more than the sum of their parts the Slysz being one very notable example.
    But for me $400 is too much to stomach.
    I disagree about the titanium framelock not requiring a lock bar insert. At $400 i think its expected and necessary when almost all of the competition has it and for less money.
    Thats the only thing keeping me from going goo-goo for the Slysz and the subvert for that matter.
    I know i know. Im but one little drop in the bucket of the knife community. But the makers do read these posts and it could make a difference.
    Great review as always!

  • @IkesBook
    @IkesBook 3 года назад +3

    I know the lock bar insert doesn't matter that much, but I feel like that would have been an easy qci that would make it feel more in line with things like the sebenza 31 and xm-18

    • @ReclusiveMountainMan
      @ReclusiveMountainMan 2 года назад

      The Sebenza and the XM-18 were never intended to have inserts when they were originally designed. I've never seen a Sebenza or a XM-18 wear out. The inserts are a gimmick to sell more knives. Does nothing to improve these knives.

  • @mikem4259

    I dont do social media. I found out about this knife here, on RUclips. I found one from someone who just wanted his money back. he took it out of the box, and out of the plastic bag, opened it, closed it, and realized he it wasn't for him. he just wanted his money back, so I gladly obliged. I love it, except that damnable relief cut. why does the relief cut extend from the lock bar, into the frame, right under the pocket clip? would have made getting out of my pocket easier. I hemmed and hawed about getting the original, back when it went for $299 on blade hq, then they were sold out, and it was discontinued. I really regretted that.

    It’s super easy to remove the blue anodizing on the scales and have a nice monochromatic look close to the original.

  • @LaddGardner4
    @LaddGardner4 3 года назад

    Have the original, and modded the access hole within 30 minutes, extending the cut to allow effortless flicking. Looks great, too. Vastly prefer the original over the blotchy blue and satin finish M390. XHP is easy to sharpen and a mirror-edge is easy to achieve. Stone washed blade is reflective and gorgeous and doesn't show scratches. Hopefully Knife Joy will revert to the original for several runs. Cuts like a laser. $400 is very fair -- especially if the Norseman is selling at $900. The Bowie is part of knife-history.

  • @ReclusiveMountainMan
    @ReclusiveMountainMan 2 года назад

    CTS-XHP rusts/stains easily. I like M390 over XHP because of this. I have a Les George VECP and a Todd Davison slip joint that both have XHP. It's a great steel, too.
    I've never worn out a properly done titanium liner or frame lock. Inserts are a solution in search of a problem.

      @@orangerider2827 Well, that sucks man. I have two and don't have that problem with either of them. Use one to prep food every night. I think it's fine specimen. When I suggested Don check out the Spydiechef, I was more referring to the fact that Knifejoy (I think) also did a blue anodized version of the chef. However, since you brought up specifics, the LC200N steel on the chef is pretty comparable to s30v in terms of durability and edge retention and has unparalleled rust and corrosion resistance, plus a pretty sweet titanium scale. But, to each their own.

    This is an interesting knife and itbis a great thing they brought it back. I only wish Spyderco could find a way of 3D shaping a handle without it adding $100 to the cost of the knife (I mean I understand that that process is expensive, it is a genuine wish). I would love to have one, but I would not pay $400 for one (comparing it to something like Schempp Bowie or even Caribbean - I just don’t see the added value quite as high as the cost is. I am aware that Spyderco prices their knives on cost and are not trying to milk their customers. Just here the cost to value is not quite as great as with some other of their knives.

  • @bahjinelson3986

    It's a great knife and I wouldn't judge people for paying the $400. For that price I would expect and desire weight reduction machining in the scales. It would be that much better. To be fair about reducing knife prices to their materials goes both ways though, because very often people will justify high costs citing materials used (especially reviewers).

    I mean not to get too technical when you take into account the ~11% inflation over the last 5 years and rising labor costs that brings the total from $350 up to ~$390 adding on the cost of m390 over xhp and the labor involved with anodizing the scales $400 is pretty comparable to the original knife. It is a bit expensive in my opinion but that’s just my thoughts on the argument where people say they are overcharging for it and how it is a crime to add on $50 to the price.

    400$ was too much for that knife in the first place then the idiots on secondary trying to get quadruple that. Get a chef, techno, etc for 230 or save a little over 400 for a much better knife.

      @@orangerider2827 that sucks, glad you found something better. I might get the techno at some point but really I don't spend over 200 on spydercos and benchmades. There's better stuff out there.

    Why would you want the scales more rounded? Keep it original even if it’s reboot. Every damn car on the road is a round piece of shit, I miss the days of being different, wether it be body lines on a vehicle or knife scales.
    Side note: IMO this run looks better. Blue is awesome how many damn Spydie’s are carbon fiber, gray titanium, black G10….. a lot… boring. I’m a SpyderCo guy, that’s all I own ( 14 most of which are discontinued,exclusive, flashback etc) but damn I love when they make different ( their regular stuff is great) knives than the other guys, but silts special when they step out of their own normal designs/patterns.
    I don’t need 20 PM2’s, 10 Delica’s, and 15 Manix 2’s because they changed the color of the damn scales….
