If I wanted serious chess lessons, I might buy a book. *If I wanted someone to throw a book at me when I hang a queen, I watch Levy.* Levy's value I do not think he can see from the back of his own eyes. Loving all the chess content! It's interesting to see the real personality behind the faces of chess. Levy seems very genuine and honest, especially about giving up competitive chess due to anxiety etc. A chess player's life is like the duck syndrome, calm on the surface and gliding along nicely but underneath you're going a million miles an hour and it's stressful; a weird, complex juxtaposition between perception and reality in the calm game of chess lol
Lex, I love all these chess videos recently, as a chess fan it’s been a really good insight into the lives of these grandmasters and streamers. Thank you so much for providing an ever expanding wide range of guests ❤️🔥 God bless
I'm not not much of a chess person, but this is one of the most interesting conversations I've heard in a very long time. Two fascinating people. Thank you both.
I love levy for one of the strangest reasons i don't think i've heard from anyone else, but the thing about his explanations about positions just feels so much more natural to me. The way he explains Chess almost makes me think i can actually understand WHY a situation is good or bad rather than everything looking like a pre-calculated move with thousands of scenarios that have already been played out in the players' heads, which is what happens but i never really got why the positioning of pieces was so important before i started watching him. He leans into a more intuitive understanding of the game rather than memorizing and repeating moves which is usually how people try to teach you how to play, the way people will talk about it is "Okay, just play out as many scenarios in your mind from this situation and see which move looks better." Which just never taught me to look out for openings, why some pieces prefer some very specific positions on the board, and how to advance pawn structures etc, etc. TL;DR is that i find his POV on chess situations much more approachable than any other content creator. Yes i suck at chess, but Levy makes me feel like i can actually understand what's going on.
Interesting listening to Levy talk about how becoming IM destroyed his motivation. (1:10:52) Sounds so eerily similar to what happened to Ding Liren after winning the world chess championship. Not that I’ve seen that stratospheric level of success but I can def relate to this. Such a strange phenomenon.
I don’t like the sound of the term parasocial. I much prefer one side friendship, and Lex you’ve been an incredible one-sided friend since 2018. I’m incredibly thankful for these podcasts. You’ve been there for me through late night runs and drives while I clear my head. You and your guests have kept me company through solo hikes where I’ve been scared senseless questioning my life choices. Being able to sit and listen, not physically of course, to hundreds of deep conversations has been incredible, thank you. If I ever get the honour of bumping into you in person, I’d love to be able to hold it together, not put pressure on you and just say “thank you” or give a respectful head nod that would hopefully get the same message across. However, becoming successful enough at something, to be on your radar and give you a good conversation would be cool too. Incredible gratitude for who you are. Thank you, and I love you brother.
Maaaan, i have never seen any of his podcasts. But this is incredible he asks real questions that really give me something its incredible to listen, big up man ...
Lex a conversation with “Micheal Redmond” 9dan professional in the game of go would be really cool . You could talk about the game of the century “Alphago vs Lee Sedol” and the game of go .
Lex, please have Danny Rensch on the pod. Coming from a chess lover and a computer scientist, I agree completely with you that it would be so interesting to hear about their cheating algorithm and more from him as a person
Nobody who could rise through the rankings naturally off of their own abilities as fast as Hans did would ever need to cheat. The chess speaks for itself.
1:23:00 I find that MMORPGs can be pretty wholesome, you can get that skyrim-esque open world exploration, while being part of a community with a lot of moving parts, you're part of something bigger than yourself.
Hell yes, been waiting for this since your podcast with magnus. Now you've checked off kasparov, magnus, the botez sisters, and levy. I'd love to maybe see a Daniel Naroditsky next, or even an Eric Hansen. Keep it up Lex!
I love at the 3 hour mark, Levy says "And in comes the computer with a f'ing haymaker and suddenly everybody goes 'oh, everything we know about chess has gone out the window'". It reminds me of almost the exact phenomenon that Daniel Negreanu said about using AI solvers that spit out "the best answer" and then trying to sorta reverse engineer the reasoning behind the answer and how it opened up a bunch of new ways of looking at possible moves/plays. Love this shit. Great podcast.
Your podcast’s are so interesting and captivating, yet also soothing. When I know absolutely nothing about the topic I still find myself engaged, relaxed and curious
I have a question. Why in the fuck did this channel not get recommended to me before now? This guy interviews a large portion of experts in multiple fields of my interest, and is objectively the best I have seen at doing so. Well, first thing first, excellent channel and wonderful talent on the part of the interviewer. Second thing, fuck the youtube algorithm.
I'm so glad to see GothamChess on the Lex Fridman podcast. Two of my favorite content creators. I would love to see other chess players sharing their stories as well
Began watching Gotham Chess a few months ago. Levy makes chess entertaining with an amazing scope of curiosity and insight. Glad you interviewed with him.
1:15:57 lex, I’ve never really appreciated you until this talk. I really appreciate your interview style and have learned a lot from your conversations. When Gotham chess was talking about how he felt after getting IM is a feeling I think about alot. I was a very competitive “gamer” (top 00.05% in the game I played) until I hurt my right shoulder and have stepped away from it so I can heal. I miss the competition and team work so much. I’ve looked everywhere to find something close to it but have not found anything. Never take for granted the ability to test your self against your peers
Great interview!!!! Thank you for interviewing Levy. As someone who has watched many of his videos and heard his views on many of the topics discussed, this was still fascinating!
lex is smart, he goes for a potentially uncomfortable conversation topic to an obviously uncomfortable topic of conversation to make the interviewee more comfortable about the potentially uncomfortable topic, and then asks about it. conversational chess is kinda poetic in this video

TL;DR is that i find his POV on chess situations much more approachable than any other content creator. Yes i suck at chess, but Levy makes me feel like i can actually understand what's going on.
I know next to nothing about chess, but somehow still reeeally enjoyed this conversation.
Great stuff, as always Lex.
Probably my favorite Lex Fridman podcast...and I've seen a lot of them. Great subject, and great guest. Please do more chess podcasts!
I am SUPER excited to watch this! Lifetime goal for me: be on this podcast. 😃
Your goal should be to do something so important, that you would naturally be invited to Lex' podcast.
Keep up the amazing work, Chess for Charity! Love your channel!♟️
Low key one of my “many” motivations for working hard 😅
I’m hoping by the end of this 3 hour vid I can see the hidden picture in Levy’s shirt.
It’s an image of a rook sacrifice.
Maaaan, i have never seen any of his podcasts. But this is incredible he asks real questions that really give me something its incredible to listen, big up man ...
turned out to be one very human and interesting conversation, thanks a lot for having it.
DAYUM MAN... DANIEL NEGRANEU AND LEVY? Lex been stepping up his podcast game.
Lex a conversation with “Micheal Redmond” 9dan professional in the game of go would be really cool . You could talk about the game of the century “Alphago vs Lee Sedol” and the game of go .
You guys ever see a crossover video that feels so specifically catered to you that its actually unreal?
1:41:30 Magnus and Hans were playing chess on the beach.
Wow what a bizzare image that conjures up now.
Just got into chess and Gotham Chess is my guy.
Really appreciated seeing him on another favourite's podcast!
Thank you gents, looking sharp Levy!
Or they cheated from the start.
Well, “need to” sure. But people don’t usually cheat because they need to
1:23:00 I find that MMORPGs can be pretty wholesome, you can get that skyrim-esque open world exploration, while being part of a community with a lot of moving parts, you're part of something bigger than yourself.
I was thrilled to see Levi on your show!

Back again and every time I come back, I'm quickly reminded why I love Lex
I never thought this would happen. My two favourite people on RUclips together. Thanks Lex and Levy
I would love to see other chess players sharing their stories as well
Lex your guest choices lately have been nothing short of amazing. Finger is on the pulse well done.
Began watching Gotham Chess a few months ago. Levy makes chess entertaining with an amazing scope of curiosity and insight. Glad you interviewed with him.
Lex Fridman + Levy Rozman = braingasm ❤
I am already having it lol

1:15:57 lex, I’ve never really appreciated you until this talk. I really appreciate your interview style and have learned a lot from your conversations. When Gotham chess was talking about how he felt after getting IM is a feeling I think about alot. I was a very competitive “gamer” (top 00.05% in the game I played) until I hurt my right shoulder and have stepped away from it so I can heal. I miss the competition and team work so much. I’ve looked everywhere to find something close to it but have not found anything. Never take for granted the ability to test your self against your peers
OW?
@@dovke5305 it was apex and there isn’t content of it on my channel, but my shoulder is healed (mostly) and I am currently the flex dps for a 4K team!
Awesome! My two favorite RUclipsrs/podcasters in one video!
What wonderful human beings these two are. I like their values.
Lex is such a thoughtful thorough interviewer. Every question I had answered
I'm so excited u keep having such interesting chess personalities on. Hikaru, Eric Rosen, or Daniel Naroditsky next?
Great interview!!!! Thank you for interviewing Levy. As someone who has watched many of his videos and heard his views on many of the topics discussed, this was still fascinating!
Turned out to be a very high value episode for me as a listener.🙏
lex is smart, he goes for a potentially uncomfortable conversation topic to an obviously uncomfortable topic of conversation to make the interviewee more comfortable about the potentially uncomfortable topic, and then asks about it. conversational chess is kinda poetic in this video
Legendary podcast, so happy that two of my favorite RUclips worlds have collided
I am so excited by this podcast! Two of my favorite creators
Lex I am loving the GM podcasts... please invite Daniel Naroditsky, the best youtube chess teacher imo
Im glad y’all mentioned perpetual chess podcast. That’s awesome
