Thank you all for watching! We put a lot of work into this one and thought it was a fun retrospective look back at one of the many ways the Western World tried to adapt or localize Sailor Moon. If you enjoy the video, we'd love to hear from you. We also have a store, cosmobunny.shop , where you can use code SAILOR for 10% off your first purchase! We have some smaller channels too like a let's play channel here - www.youtube.com/@realdegenerateplays and a channel where we look at RPGs and JRPGs here - www.youtube.com/@DJayRPG
I remembered Robyn (from Anime America) doing a review of the differences of Sailor Moon from the classic anime to the modern retelling. But I thought the funniest moment is when she had saw the American adaptation of the pretty sailor soldier which saban did a plot episode of between live action to animation. It was very awkward.
Yeah, it is cringe, and the outfit doesn't look great. But it was just for a TV marathon, and it's kinda impressive they even made an effort just for this. The woman also does a good job at acting. I think a modern live action remake could work if done properly. It shouldn't be americanized though. I don't think we had something like this in Germany. The cringiest thing from here are probably the Super Moonies, but it could be worse. They used to be a Sailor Moon band who made songs about the show. They had rather simple lyrics that weren't always correct and pretty obviously tried to appeal to a younger audience. Some of their songs are bangers though, and two of their songs were even used as openings. One of their songs was actually what got me into Sailor Moon ("Kämpfe Sailor Moon" - it even has an English version called "Come On Sailor Moon"). And hey, their costumes probably looked better than this. xD
America and Canada both went crazy trying to figure out how to change the demographic of this show from teenagers and young adults to little kids lol 😂
@@bluebaron6858 It wasn't really aimed at small children and the ideas of what is acceptable for different ages are very different in Japan (they're not soft, unlike a lot of Western countries, when it came to mature themes.)
A live action Sailor Moon could work. If they have the Japanese actors, writers, directors, cast, and crew who work at Toei on Kamen Rider and Super Sentai/Power Rangers to make it. Then give it an English dub like Ultraman does. I can see the vision. I wouldn't trust Hollywood and Netflix to make the live action Sailor Moon adaptation.
Doing it Super Sentai style is actually a good idea. They'd just need to have a budget and do what was done there with incorporating costumes. It could work similarly to Ultraman.
@@crunchesterIt's iconic but it's pretty low budget so it would be nice to see a real crack at it where a studio is willing to fund episodes with more than hopes and dreams.
I found Sailor Moon by watching Toonomy at five years old she was the first female hero who didn't rely on a boy to save her from something. she literally kicked their ass and took names as well as her girlfriends instead of asking or waiting for a male hero to come and save her because she couldn't fight or was too weak. I loved that a girl could stand up for herself and her friends and fight together to show what they could do when a male was not around or was a dome ass because tuxedo mask was pretty much a dome ass who hardly did anything to help out other thin served as a distraction. so sailor moon and her soldiers could refocus and kick the badass alone. loved that. I hate seeing the female asking for help from the male or being considered weak and having to rely on the male hero to save her and her madin hood from an enemy
Unfortunately, I missed that one....However, I DID see the Fox Kids Saturday Morning "Premiere" of Episode 1 of Sailor Moon R when it was run as the "Sailor Moon Special" on September 9, 1995 at around 8:30 am Eastern Time....I remember that day since it was ALSO the day that the Sony PlayStation was finally for sale at my local Electronics Boutique (I had pre-ordered the thing with Battle Arena To-Shin-Den and I can't remember what else). And this was before the nationally syndicated run about two days later.
About the part where you discuss how much of the lines were food related. It wasn't her only feature, it wasn't even something you could call "defining" about her. So if food and lazy jokes were in every segment, I'd say it's a real misrepresentation of her very relatable teenaged girl character. I get having some of those kinds of jokes, but it's really a shame that they leaned on it so hard when that was just one smaller aspect of Usagi and her character. Albeit maybe one of her most relatable traits haha.
I remember seeing some of these clips one time rewatching Sailor Moon on satellite when it was in syndication so they must have cut up the marathon and used the clips later on. It definitely was goofy, but kind of in-line with a lot of the marketing and early adaptation work. I honestly would just love PGSM to be made available rather than a new live action being produced. PGSM just nails those super sentai roots so perfectly.
First time seeing these, was on here while doing a random search for sailor moon content. I missed it since KWGN aired this show back then in Denver Colorado at 8:00 AM (right after PowerBlock) while I and most were at school, yeah, said merathon is indeed rare!
I've never seen this clips when 'Sailor Moon' aired on my local station. I don't know if they aired on it's brief run on USA, but I know for sure that Toonami NEVER airedthose clips. My first exposure to them was from Bennett The Sage's video about 'Teknoman'. As A live action decision of Sailor Moon, I agree that her wig is very distracting, and she has A tiny bit of weight on her. Plus, she was given material that could only come from the 'hey there, fellow kids' type of TV execs.
Toonami was the first thing that introduced me to Sailor Moon during my childhood years as I watched the DiC version and that's what got me so into the Sailor Moon series as I fell in love with the entire franchise!!! I always love the promo Sailor Moon toonami videos as it always get me super excited to see the episodes and I always wake up early every morning to watch it. That's the golden days that I always cherish from my childhood years of watching Sailor Moon and I'm so happy the DiC Version introduced me to the show, I automatically love the Sailor Moon Viz Media English Dub as my #1 favorite, but I really appreciate DiC for bringing me Sailor Moon in my life. OMG I didn't know that they did a Sailor Moon marathon like that, that was pretty cute seeing the actress played as Sailor Moon and she really looks beautiful too. I do agree that they should have gave her the Sailor Moon costume exactly like the one from the show with accessories, but it was very cute seeing this version for the first time.
