This is actually a compilation of clips:
    - The first is a Dateline segment called "Moonstruck" which aired around November 1995.
    - The second is a clip from YTV's The Zone, probably from Fall 1995.
    - The third is a segment from CBC's Undercurrent, from November 22, 1996.
    - The fourth is a fansubbed interview with Naoko Takeuchi.
    - And the last is a recording of the abandoned original version of Sailor Moon, from an Anime Expo in 1998.

When I was watched Sailor Moon as a kid in '95, I remember one day I was reading the end credits and it said "Based on the comic". I was a big fan, but there was zero advertising on TV about Sailor Moon or any related merch. When I realized there was actually a "comic" (manga), I ran to my mom and said we have to go to the comics store now! We looked in several local comic shops and asked the clerks, but to my dismay, none of them knew what the heck I was talking about. She said if I really want it, the only option is to special order from a catalog and pay an exorbitant shipping cost (also Internet shopping was in its infancy in '95). I said, ah forget it... I love the show but we don't have to go that far... lol. How things have changed... These days, you can read manga so easily on the Internet.

Sailor Moon started in December 93 in France, the first country to broadcast it after Japan so I was 5 years old when I became a fan and I’m 36 now and still a fan. It’s a blessing and a curse because I couldn’t collect things, I was too young so I started my collection during my teens and with the constant popularity there is always new items and products to buy or vintage articles but so many fans and crazy pricing is a double edged sword.

Naoko Takeuchi created the manga Sailor Moon, which was then turned into an anime series; it hit Japanese airwaves in 1992 and lasted 200 EPISODES until the show ended in 1997. Here in the States, the anime was dubbed in English and aired in 1995, but only 65 episodes were aired (the show was aired in syndication back then [I used to watch it every time I came home from school just to watch it, even though my mom told me that it was a "girl's show"]); a few years later, Cartoon Network aired the series on their TOONAMI block along with the 17 that were left unaired (known as the LOST EPISODES [my favorite LOST EPISODE was 'No Thanks, Nurse Venus', where Mina helps her friends {Serena, Amy, Raye, and Lita} while they've got the flu; things don't go according to plan, however, as she messes everything up, such as making soup that's WAY TOO SPICY for Raye and breaking Serena's bedroom window with a digital thermometer that has a dead battery]), making it go from 65 episodes to 82. Several years later, new episodes were aired, bringing that number to 156 EPISODES. BTW, if you want to know what happened to the other 44 episodes, here's your answer: they were skipped, along with the ENTIRE 5TH SEASON; the only place that yo can watch the 5th season is on RUclips.

It's painful hearing the narrator butcher Takeuchi-sama's name! It's Nao-KO Ta-ke-u-chi! The Sailor Senshi are all in their TEENS for Heaven's sake, so please, no 'blonde bombshell'!
And female otaku exist, believe me they do! They might not express their love of anime, manga, and comic book series in the same way as their male counterparts, but they do exist! ^_^

We would look at "otaku" very differently now. Nearly everyone has at least one obsession over some kind of franchise like Harry Potter, Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, My Little Pony, DC/Marvel superheroes, and of course anime. Almost everything here is such a time stamp. Everyone is discussing "anime" like it's this new strange thing, wheres now, almost everyone in their teens, twenties, and maybe even thirties can name at least a couple shows.
I didn't think there was THAT much info about Sailor Mercury out there. That guy was just creepy as hell, and there was probably something else going on there. Wonder where he is now. He'd be about FORTY! Also, LOL at that club watching 60 eps of Maison Ikkoku in a row (which would take about 24 hours). The very mention of that show makes it very clear that this was the mid-90s anime fandom. Actually, that anime was about 10 years old at that point, but the fans didn't seem to mind getting obsessed over older stuff as much.

    • @ToruKun1
      @ToruKun1 10 лет назад +5

Well, the internet, along with the whole world, moved a lot slower, so most of the shows American anime fans got into in the mid '90s were from the '80s or earlier.

What's most interesting to me is the underlying xenophobia and fearmongering in the reporter's narration in the 1st segment. Lots of threatening language.
He says Japan has "now invaded" the toy industry. He also lumps all of Japanese auto industry (Toyota, Honda, etc), the electronics industry (Panasonic/Sony) and toy company all as "they". Sailor Moon also "invaded" USA. Bandai is "the biggest threat" to the American Toy industry. The success of Sailor Moon is a "dream for kids, nightmare for American toymakers".
Also interesting: Reporter asks very interesting and thoughtful question about localization, and the answer from Bandai man is completely nonsense. "everything is the same, except for the casting!" Sailor Moon was notorious for changing very big details about the show. Names, gender, sexual preferences of characters. An entire season was eliminated because of too many transgender themes. The reporter even mentions the toning down after.

All the 'omg he said sexy is he a pedo' comments are bugging the hell out of me. In Japan (you know, where this show is FROM?) fourteen year old girls are considered sexy. Live with it.
The Mercury fanboy is exactly that: a fan. He's no more obcessed than say a football fan. Just because it's anime instead of sports, it suddenly becomes "creepy?"
That SABAN trailer... [shudders again] We were spared that. There is a God.
