Just cannot believe that people who were kids in the 1990s grew up with the DiC dub of Sailor Moon and the 4Kids dub of the first Pokémon movie. Then they find out a decade later that all that stuff they grew up with was dubbed into English and edited.
Actually, a lot of folks knew back then. Several sites on the internet (Like Sailor Moon Uncensored) popped up showing the changes and attacked the dub for changing things. But no one cared, because they liked it anyway.
Back in the spring of 1997 and May of 2000, Buena Vista home video released 12 selected episodes from the first season of Sailor Moon and the first arc of the second season of Sailor Moon R on vhs by DIC toon-time video.
You also have to remember back then, there was no such thing as Netflix, Crunchyroll, Disney+, or any streaming service like we have today to watch Sailor Moon in it's uncut format back then. Also, remember this came out before DVD and blu-ray was invented. So there was no way to get a unedited & uncut Sailor Moon back then (not counting the bootleg fansubbed VHS tapes). When DVD was invented, Sailor Moon (the first 2 seasons) was able to get a subtitled uncut version in the US in early 2000's (which pre-dated Viz Media's subsequent releases on blu-ray). Other classic anime like Voltron (which itself is a adaptation of the anime, Golion) and Robotech (aka Macross) didn't get a uncut subtitled until many years later.
You know: I can't be mad at this actress playing an "American Sailor Moon". Despite the goofy costume and American references (JELLY DONUT, ANYONE??) she puts all her energy into that performance and is still very likeable and goofy (in a good way). I even plan a fanart on that version of Sailor Moon, just for fun. I didn't grow up with Sailor Moon on US TV (rather on German TV, where in later years we got German popstars doing notoriusly cringeworthy Sailor Moon performances) but I can imagine that American kids enjoyed her as Sailor Moon.
You're right, besides, people have to keep in mind that these live action segments were aired on different times, maybe this can be considered unfunny, unappealing or "so bad is good" by post 90's standards, but probably by the time it was aired, people(specially kids) enjoyed these live action segments and maybe this is a minor detail, but Tia Browsh did it good for a 14 year old, because in case you don't know, she was only 14 when she played Sailor Moon in these live action segments.
I agree. It's such a shame even she was unable to help Sailor Moon reach popularity in the States, causing the series to end in the middle of the Negamoon / Black Moon Clan storyline of Sailor Moon R, in which we Americans would not see the ending unless we downladed English subs off the internet or waited for the lost episodes to air on Toonami.
This lady got paid (I imagine better than minimum wage) to do mediocre Sailor Moon cosplay for a local TV station. This was someone's job in the 90s. Let that sink in. I like to imagine her outside on a smoke break, in between takes, in full costume. The whole time she is paranoid about her cheap, highly flammable wig bursting into flames if her cigarette's cherry so much as grazes a pigtail. .
I remember watching this as kid... I was amazed at her costume at the time. I was hard to find Sailor moon things in stores (in my town at least) When Halloween would come by they never had a real costume of her, only a plastic Sailor moon face with an apren type dress... this was in 95
ZeldasFinalFantasy omg yes! I had the sad plastic moon face. I remember my aunt helping me sew a sailor moon costume in 5th grade to wear to the school parade. My mom told me to borrow her "70s hooker boots" hahaha. Now you can pretty much buy a finished costume though not a nice one. Kids these days are so lucky! (said in old granny voice) LOL.
Same - I used to sometimes find a few things at Hot Topic but usually had to travel into San Francisco to visit China Town and Japan Town, or one of the Asian shopping centers in a neighbor town like Fremont or Milpitas….this was in the late 90s. My, how times have changed….now I can just go…anywhere and find SOMETHING sailor moon…or the internet.
THIS girl, this TV special was when I found Sailor Moon. That day back in 1994 making me 5 years old.Was the day I fell in love with Anime and have never stopped. ^^ Thank you for uploading this special! Its just amazing still how popular and loved Sailor Moon is today. Brings a happy smile to my face.
Hi alexa, am i right Alexa is short for Alexandra? i love this sailormoon too. Have u seen the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon La Soldier musicals? it's japanese. and they said they're coming to American theaters. not sure what that means. maybe just a Movie. and not the Live performance. Cannot find anything about where they are to perform or just a recorded Movie in theaters.
@@buddyr3 Actually, from what I read, these live action segments were only done for a Thanksgiving marathon aired on the network it appeared on (WBNX Cleveleand), so Tia was basically hired to perform in segments that would wrap around five episodes (which by the dialogue, sounds like the episodes were going to be A Moon Star Is Born, as well as the four episodes where the four other sailor scouts meet Serena and gain their powers).
Awww this is really cute! I would have loved this as a kid if we had it in the UK! Sure it's not anything like the Japanese version but it's in keeping with the 90s and with the American dub. I don't know everyone is being so rude about her figure and her outfit bless her. It was only meant to be a kids thing, the cosplay is good enough!
Then try watching the footage from the cancelled live action Sailor Moon. By comparison, this looks more faithful but that's just because the other one looked awful.
I Think,I Can Handle This One! *Twinkling*Disguise Power,Turn Me Into A HipHop Dancer! *Stars Swirling* How Delightful,I'm A Disco Dancer,Indeed.❤😊❤😊❤😊❤
Wow, I cannot believe that I have never heard of this or seen this. I used to make Sailor Moon websites in 1998.. I should of heard of this in passing over these decades.. so this is awesome to see now.
Haha, wish I could have seen this when I was watching Sailor Moon as a kid, this is really cute. As cheesy as this is, Tia Browsh did a great job with the role playing a ditzy, silly-dub-slang speaking Sailor Moon.
You have to hand it to Miss Browsh for nailing the US dub's Serena perfectly, as goofy as US Serena is, it does take some talent to be able to pull that off without overacting the already overacted part. I will have to say that whoever created this in the first place... just why? They managed to make the members of the odd and obscure German music act dedicated to Sailor Moon, Super Moonies, look better in their Sailor Scout outfits compared to what is on display here. It's kinda scary, those oversized buns man... it's like they are alive.
"I'm so sorry for disappointing all of the Sailor Moon fans out there. It seems you didn't like my performance, flat out hated it, or at the very least couldn't stand the costume. But you don't seem to understand I had nothing to do with any of it. It's not like I designed the costume or wrote the copy.... I was 14 when I was hired to play this role. I simply read the lines and wore what they gave me. And I got paid. As a 14 year-old it's exciting to get paid to do something "like" acting when it's your dream to be an actress. They wanted over-the-top and made me do it 100 times until I looked absolutely and completely ridiculous. And I've been plagued by this, your negative comments, people making fun of me and rofl for the last 14 years. Why is this being dug up now? It seems to reappear on the internet every couple months and I'm not sure why. Is it still news? Or do people just want to make me feel bad? Again, I'm so sorry to have disappointed all of you Sailor Moon fans. I was 14 and simply did what they asked. I feel awful and if I could take it back I would." These spots were run at the start and finish of each segment of a Sailor-Moon-Athon held over Thanksgiving weekend in 1996. That's it. Dic - the company that had the rights at the time - wanted to do a big push in the USA and ultimately turn it into a live action film. I think the feedback was awful (if you've seen it you'll know why that's my guess) and they kinda dropped it off the mainstream radar. But I was actually forced to sign a 7 year contract agreeing to do anything and everything they wanted me to do with relation to Sailor Moon. But again, I think they were disappointed with the ratings bc I never had to do anything Sailor Moon related again. Hopefully that explains it for you and gives you some perspective. Best. T." - Tia Browsh Found this on an article featuring the clip. Sad story. She didn't ask for this, she was just a kid taking a job.
This warms my heart so much. Childhood memories of the 90's. I remember watching a commercial for sailor moon with some kind of toyota ad music in the background on Fox
thank you so much for uploading this! never thought I would get to see it! as to the other comments - this is actually very well-done (despite the unfortunate wig). I think if any of you had seen this as children, you would have liked it.
Everyone is saying stuff about her outfit and everything, yeah, I know, but you have to remember Anime was more of a parody, considered cheesy, and wasn't really popular over here and everything yet back then, also, cosplaying back then was probably hard because they probably never made the actual costumes for the characters back then yet, or Japan probably didn't have ways to bring the good costumes over here, so they probably did everything from scratch, including the horrible wig. XD (If this was made now that cosplayers are now a thing, it would be WAY better with the outfit, wig, and all. ^^)
I didn't think I ever saw this at all with someone dressing and acting as Sailor Moon. I did start watching Sailor Moon before it was on Toonami, but I don't remember what channel or what time it was on. I think I would have remembered that it was on Fox if it was with shows like Dennis the Menace,VR Trooper and Power Rangers.
@@thestarskynight3291 It is, as this aired on the network as some sort of marathon. I never saw it as well since where I lived as a kid, Sailor Moon aired on a dead slot when it first aired (mainly 5:00 or 5:30 a.m.)

I think she is pretty cute! It's not the best interpretation of Sailor Moon, but I don't blame the actor at all for this. It's really the script and how she was directed that makes this feel so insincere.
You're right, without mentioning that she did it very good for a 14 year old, because for what I found, she was just 14 when she played Sailor Moon in these live action segments.
Where did they get the costume? Did they get it from Japan? Where did they get her wand? When and where did this air? I am fascinated by this, I can't stop watching this.

Aw. She does a really good job! I actually like her more then some of the official voice actresses from the original dub.
I mean that wig though.
She maybe one 1st USA Sailor Moon cosplayer. I can't stop looking at over size buns. Her wig just wrong in so many ways.

Where is she now?
Where did they get the costume? Did they get it from Japan? Where did they get her wand? When and where did this air? I am fascinated by this, I can't stop watching this.
lowki07 it was the official adult costume available at the time, minus the wig. Her wand is the Bandai America wand. It aired November 24th 1995, Black Friday.
This aired Thanksgiving Weekend 1995 on a local Fox station
Actually her wig isn't that bad
