Great review and demo , i was on there website and noticed an SG with what looked like P90 style pickups. I'm wondering if i should pull the trigger , for under $200 seems like a good deal. I have the Grote SG and can honestly say after i changed the pickups and tuners , it's on par with my $600 Epiphone SG G400 Pro as far as quality build. I paid $151 for the Grote last year , but heard these are about on par with those....
Cool. I haven't bought any more Firefly guitars because I don't want this to be a Firefly promo channel, but let me know if you end up buying the P90 SG and if it's any good.
I just purchased the model with the P-90s that you talk about and I found it a bit of a let down. It's not a bad guitar, and it actually sounds decent, but I own a few Gibson and Epiphone guitars with P-90 pickups, and the Firefly P-90s don't quite sound the same. To my ears, the Firefly version sounded a bit too "Clean" if that makes any sense to you. I guess I got my hopes up on purchasing a cheaper version of my Gibson SG with P-90s (Don't want to take it out of the house too often, but I want that sound) and it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, the Firefly version is a good guitar, and the sound has a personality all of it's own, but if you're expecting to duplicate or replicate the Live at Leeds album, you're better off saving your pennies and getting a Gibson. On the other hand, it's a nice guitar, and has a good sound, with a nice crunch, but it's clean, and not much growl. I wouldn't dismiss it 100%, I'm still gonna play it and figure out what I can actually do with it, but, for $200.00 (U.S.) you get what you pay for.
That makes sense. The pickups on cheap guitars are often the weakest point, but also a pretty easy upgrade. For your main guitar? No, you're not going to use a Firefly as is. As a backup or with a pickup swap? It's looking good. And for beginners? Yeah, it's good.
@@nankypooh655 Thanks for the info , just got mine today with the regular humbuckers and already started modding it for P90's. I purchased them on amazon and gonna install them tomorrow , i figured that might be the case with the Firefly stock P90's. Glad i just got the regular version SG now. Definitely seems pretty nicely built and i can't find any real flaws , the pickups are a little noisy and thin sounding to me. But doesn't matter since i'm swapping them out...
@@ArtOfShredYT No not my main guitar , for a mod project like my Grote was. It's a solid guitar and has a good platform for upgrades , already changed the tuners to locking ones and changed the tune-O-matic and tail piece. I got rid of the FFLG a year ago so that's not happening but I did buy a DiMarzio Super Distortion and it's a possibility I'd mod the Epiphone SG Special I just posted a review of. It's unlikely as I have other plans for the Super Distortion but who knows, maybe.
I had just recently purchased two FFLGs from Firefly, and you made a good point about the pick ups. All I will say is that if you're on a budget, and you want a guitar that sounds like an SG Standard (either Gibson or Epiphone) these are decent guitars for the money. However, just remember that you get what you pay for. Not too shabby for the cost, though. One thing I didn't mention was both of the models I ordered did not have tips on the toggle switch. A bit of an annoyance, but something I could probably solve by going to my local guitar shop for spare parts. But yeah, an erzatz SG with humbuckers that make it sound like an SG standard for approx $200.00 (U.S.) really isn't such a bad deal. Almost as good as my Epiphone SG Jr. Special with the two twin single open coils.
The switch tip should be in a little baggie in your box. It's a solid instrument for the price. But they'd have difficulty selling these for what I think they're worth just due to the brand name. On another note, I bought a different $200 guitar that basically blows this and every other cheap guitar out of the water. (Not an SG style, though.) That review will be coming soon.
@@ArtOfShredYT Thanks! It seems the bottom of the body is much thicker than the top and thicker than epiphone sgs and it is very light to me. Putting emgs in it left plenty of room for the battery. Gotta admit after owning one of the FFLG, I love it. Not that it’s perfect, no under $200 guitar is, but with some adjustment you get a good playing and sounding guitar.
So I've purchased 3 Firefly's-the 338, the FFLP and the FFLG. I was able to play all 3 out of the box, but ended up lowering the action on the 338 and FFLP. I will probably drop the action on the "SG" when I change strings, but for now I'm just playing it as-is. Of all three, the FFLG is my favorite, but I love 'em all!!!!👻

I've got the spalted maple Elite with the gold hardware $226 delivered. Had the same crud on the frets and oxidized strings. Took some work getting the ball ends out of the tailpiece and a few setup tweaks on the truss rod and bridge height. Action is great now - 1.5 mm @ the 12th fret. The neck is jumbo. A far cry from my 74' SG Special which is thin and narrow and has no neck dive. The LG does suffer neck dive and locking tuners would exacerbate the problem. Gotta say this guitar looks great and the pickups through my Marshall don't dissapoint!
Sweet! I don't often play standing up anymore so neck dive isn't really an issue but have you seen the ergonomic sling straps? They might look silly but they take care of neck dive
I recently bought one, and literally the only thing I've had to do was lower the bridge. I will change the tuners out eventually, but I find it will stay in tune quite well if I'm just playing chords or very minor bends. If I get to bendy with it, I have to tune up, but I think we all know how that goes with much higher end guitars and no locking tuners. As I've seen others say in other threads, this definitely makes for a really nice "First" guitar, but it also makes for a nice addition to ones collection if you can't afford $1,000 dollars or more for the "real deal" guitar. Over all, I'm very pleased with my guitar.
Sweet. That's great that yours was nearly spot on out of the box. I agree with you, makes for a nice first guitar and a nice backup. Thanks for sharing your experience!
That is a really nice looking guitar, I ordered the same color. Interesting, we got the same color, same guitar, yet our issues were opposite. Mine had a straight neck & clean shiny frets. But I had a few high frets I had to fix. Also weird that the switch has 4mm threads, but they sent a knob with 3.5mm threads. Also interesting, I swapped pickups, the ones on the guitar had 4 wire connections. So someone could install push/pull pots if they wanted to. I spent around $50 on Amazon, installed switch tip, guyker locking tuners & kaish bridge with roller saddles. Really happy with this guitar. Good video thanks
Ha, the knob thing is funny. Poor (or no?) quality control, but the build of the guitars is solid. They feel good, a lot better than their price. And all those upgrades for $50 on Amazon?! Nice deal man!
