    Long time SU Pro user, few months ago I was tired of paying every year what before was "maintenance" and later became "licence" , which forces you to renew to keep going.
    So I canceled the automatic renewal, installed Blender, a bit of struggle at the beginning but now I can do just fine, especially with the BIM addon (all for free..). Some grey areas if you need to print out but there are other sw for that, no biggie. Totally worth it.

      To be fair i didn't mind paying Maintenance as you still owned the software if you stopped paying. Subs is renting so you pony up or lose access to it completely.

Removing the ability to save to 2020 or earlier is just another step to try and make everyone a subscriber. They're already removed earlier version on the 3d Warehouse so it's of no use to me now. Ever wondered, how Trimble doesn’t mind investing in converting files to newer versions, that have been on the warehouse for years and were originally made in older versions of skp. But they can’t be expected to invest in keeping files accessible in older version formats? I personally think it’s not hard, nor expensive to keep all files accessible as older versions too. The warehouse was a great thing once, filled by the people and free to use for anyone. More and more it’s being converted to ‘by the people, for Trimble’. I really find that disrespectful and not doing justice to the skp community.

    I'm a pro subscriber. I justify this heavily on the fact that support and learning videos, forums, etc are going to be in sync with later versions. I'm serious about making and creating and having good tools that I can figure out is important. I have a friend that really was influential in my using sketchup. He is a big "freeware" guy. So we drift further and further apart on our sketchup commonality.
    A big annoyance with new sketchup versions for me is that the desktop settings and extensions are not brought over with the update. I have to re-install and rearrange the out of the box default to what I want to have. If there is some way I can download and go with 2024 that will pick up all my settings and extensions from 2023 - please let me know.

      Well at some point, the free desktop versions and even the paid versions become so old that it's a little unrealistic to continue supporting them. Setting I agree with you on - I wish those would migrate better. Extensions though, are a little trickier. Since they're built by individual developers who update when/if it's convenient for them, I'm not sure I WANT my old extensions trying to come over automatically. This is no different in other softwares like Blender.

    The new graphics engine only supports antialiasing up to x8, which is a problem, obtaining certain artifacts such as saw teeth in the visualization of the 3D model. In addition, I notice the lines than the SKP22 version, even without having active the option of profiles. I have been testing the same models in versions such as 2022 and 2023 and I notice some delay in milliseconds, perhaps, when making face extrusions to convert them into 3D. In addition, the default tray covers a lot of space and does not allow it to be narrower.

      @blacksheep_77 9 месяцев назад +4

      $350 a year is less than $36 month.
      If you are a professional user making money with it you likely charge at $30-40 an hour (of you should be). Which means that of the 120-200 hours you might work a month, 1 of those is spent paying for the software.
      And that's if you charge $40 an hour. If your hourly is $60 or above, you literally spend about 30 minutes a month paying for the software.
      How is that not worth the money?
      No other craft or skill that requires tools of any kind expects their tools to be free. This professional user's idea that apps should be free is so fundamentally skewed. Don't fall for it. Charge what you and your tools are worth. That is a better mentality in the long run. Sketchup as a pro 3D modeling tool with a documentation segment is the cheapest on the market. Become an expert and $34 a month you have to spend on it will be an afterthought for your overhead.

Even though they introduce "breaking updates" every couple of versions, you can still open newer Blends in older Blenders and most data won't be lost.

    We use this in education but the way sketchup checks the license it uses Bing. The problem here is that in the Uk Bing is blocked by a firewall ( in educational establishments that is) because it has unsafe search previews.. Sketchup use to use google.....why change to Bing? . There is a fix on windows versions to open the private preferenceJson and add 'the necessary google re-direct edit- on a certain line. This can work on windows and mac however it is now not possible on mac 2024 version. For us to use it in education we have to apply the fix to every student's windows account. Students using their own laptops under school wifi= it wont work- ie accessing the license check wont work( one can apply the same fix on a mac but not in the 2024 version) It is so frustrating. Why cant sketchup produce an educational version and a professional version it cant be much to change a simple redirect in the code since it can be done manually on the private preference json file. some one mentioned that it was changed from google to bing because google is blocked in China.....go figure

    If this means what I think it means, then they'd better be taking a less "locked in" approach to their utterly tragic UX. The broken editing/resizing experience, for example, must get refactored. By deprecating unsupported versions for backwards comparability, it should signal that SketchUp will no longer be beholden to outmoded poorly realized design metaphors.

    This could be solved by making the current desktop version free for non-commercial use and restricting the size of the model allowed or the addition of a watermark on all output or some other restriction but still allowed access to the full package including extensions that are vital to the majority of SketchUp users. I've seen this sort of non-commercial restriction in other software and it would negate the need for Trimble to support any but the most recent 2 offerings going forward. Thoughts?

    I am totally fed up with all of these tricks to make you subscribe. I would definitely consider buying a new version, as I did with 2019, but to give the 300€ to do WAY less than what the developers of plugins do for a fraction of the money is just not a good deal. Sketchup improves mostly through plugin debelopers (look a Fredo for example, he alone did more than Trimble these years, at least for me)

    What they should so is a pay as you go subscription, they have it for Apple, why not windows, makes no sense, I've being using Sketchup since 2014 and as much as I use it, I dont use it every week, or every month, They would have more people signing up to it, if it was a monthly pay as you go

    Tja that is when an industry decides to stick with a monopoly.
    It would have been easy to fund the development of some of the tools sketch up is really good and and improve the workflow in Blender as an example.
    Hey at least 2024 sketchUp finally has a new graphic engine to make it faster as it so far was the worst app to work with dense models.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  9 месяцев назад

      What monopoly do you think SketchUp has? Blender is an interesting example I suppose - I like Blender, but it's also very fragmented. They do roll out a lot of tools in every release, but Blender is also a different kind of modeling program, targeting sculpting, VFX, procedural modeling, rendering, etc. They haven't actually updated the base modeling functions outside of sculpting significantly in many releases now, and ironically those functions were actually tools that sort of mirrored what SketchUp does, but not as well. Nothing against Blender at all, but it's a LITTLE apples and oranges in my opinion. You can't really say "look, they changed the compositor, while SketchUp did nothing," as SketchUp doesn't HAVE a compositor, nor should it...

    • @cekuhnen
      @cekuhnen 9 месяцев назад

      @@Thesketchupessentials The point monopoly is the fact that basically every interior design position more or less demands SketchUp. And honestly, it is their own (user) fault. SketchUp modeling abilities is inferior the moment you want to make something different than a box and you know to make SketchUp usable you need to use by now commercial extensions that give it common tools such as fillet etc. You know that pretty well by yourself.
      2024 finally they improved the graphics engine and added ambient occlusion.
      Better modeling tools would have been more welcome.
      A different way to explain the problem with SketchUp is the Layout too.
      At first, it looks great but then it falls flat fast.
      SketchUp as a package is just not worth they money they charge you per year. If it were cheaper my opinion would be different.
      True compared to Blender SketchUp is faster to pick up and do some basic work and I truly understand that.
      Thats why I put the blame one the users in the industry who are simply lazy.
      With a little more effort they could learn drastically more powerful tools and don't waste funding on it each year.
      Hence the point of a missed opportunity to fund the development of a SketchUp like drafting workflow for Blender.

    Honestly, i dont like anything on the new version, location is subcription based, the new graphics engine and old graphics engine is slower as my current 2021 version at 16x analizing, feels like youre working with a bit of lag. They should look at blender how fast stuff really can work. Anyways, thanks sketchup, but i will stick to my old version =)

      @@Thesketchupessentials hi there. Yeah i have a 3070 gpu. Tried it with a 250mb file. I had both sketchups open, and with the new one also had everything set to max graphics, new engine and even chose my 3070 gpu. It works fine but not so nippy as my old version. I recon it may be exactly the same if i revert to old engine but it also feel like with a slight drag as you move about. Im not sure how to explain this, but feel like its a higher framerate but slower feedback to what get on screen. I know its early days, in time they will improve on this engine and its a good step in this direction but feel it need some work =)
