Two things make it "art": The fact that the artist has done his due: went to schools of Beaux Arts to learn to draw perfect shapes and paint realistic shadows AND THEN decided to express himself in that particular way. And The fact someone loves it and would pay to hang it on his wall. That's it. Not any more complicated than that.

Every career from doctor to lawyer, engineer to carpenter from teacher to artist are all in their field for who they are. I'm sorry..... I really don't understand this kind of art... Maybe I'm a pleeb but I would rather look at something that someone drew that looks incredibly real and took serious hours and talent. Not saying this dude didn't have talent its just not showing here.
I used to think like that until i changed prospective. There are thousands of artists who can draw your face accurately. But how many artists are there who would look at you and draw a rough image showing not you but your personality. Ex: An old painting i saw, in the face instead of eyes, there were 2 windows, one open, one closed. I spent hours thinking about the possible meaning of this. After almost a decade i still remember that image. I have seen thousands of brilliantly drawn images, but forget them in less than a day.

There are people who are fascinated by modern art, who read about its history and learn about the artists who have risen to prominence, and then there are people who don't care about it at all and have never opened the first book to try to learn anything about what it is or how it developed and why it is valued by art connoisseurs. For some reason, despite their lack of interest, these folks often have no problem expressing their negative opinions about it and criticizing anyone that has taken the time and effort to learn why it is revered among art professionals.
