*correction/ clarification. Ryan Knapton does not ride Posi-posi but I was trying to illustrate how you can get good board control, and have very dynamic riding. I apologize for any confusion.
Ill give these width drills a try, thanks! A couple additional variables to consider: snowboard boots will change your ankle mobility, and some bindings have tilted foot pads that would make wider stances more comfortable vs flat ground. So definitely have to feel out your full setup on the hill.
Thank you Tommie the most helpfull video!! I'm confused with bindings distances because change my beginner 148cm 4x4 Rossi board to channel system 154cm (Burton Custom camber) angle it's easy I like 15 front foot and -6 back foot but every video I watched people talk about angles not about bindings distances and positions and you talk about everything..
been doing that 15/-15 for around 10 years. started experimenting recently as in pow it's a bit uncomfy as I have powder twin. so moving slowly to 15/-12 and next tot try is 15/-9. takes some mental effort to try new idk why =)
so glad Tommie threw in a tidbit on what each stance types does and particularly how wide vs narrow could affect feel. I'm 5 ft 2 and have a 21 inch ( which i determined using a jump test (i think form one of his previous video)) width but may try jumping down a bit just to see if i feel more mobile that way.
Yes, I mimic you sentiment, life was a complete misery before I have arrived to a stiff camber board. Severe crashes and caught edges on flat, rocker and whatever crap was found in rental shops about 5 years ago before camber boards made a comeback flushing lots of that crap out of the market into the freestyle and freeride niches.
Maybe their hip mobility means they can still rotate a lot? I have poor outwards rotation in the hip, so a narrower angle restricts rotation too much although comfortable when standing upright. Also try squatting with straight feet, kids can do it but most western adults not... Those damn chairs! :-)
Hey man I ride a Burton easy living Flying V board. I’m right footed but ride goofy/switch. Natural stance I feel awkward haha . I also ride +15 -15 👌🏂
I've been snowboarding for 28 years now. Since I was 6 uve ridden camber boards and probably 22 of those years stance gas been 15/-15 and doe the past 2 years I've been on a hybrid rocker board and I hate it. Going back to camber. I feel like I should experiment with my stance after watching this.
I've been riding the same amount of years and always rode camber. I have a few hybrids now and I like them as well. Comes down to personal preference. Personally I like a long traditional camber for max speed and hard charging. On a resort where I mostly ride groomers and some trees I like a more playful hybrid board with both rocker and camber. I also have a Burton Pow Wrench that's flat with reverse camber at the nose. This one is great for bombing powder and quick decisive turns. It might be because I like to switch up what I'm doing so much but I can also see how you could stick to camber and be ok with doing that.
Ryan Knapton is not a good example for a positive carving stance, as he uses a duck symmetrical stance (as you can see in the video) and an ultra wide board (+30cm waist). Anyway, great video and very good explanation!
This is a great video, well said, we’ll put together. It can be pretty intimidating for people who are new to snowboarding to figure this stuff out. Kudos to all this good info. Do you ride the cartel or cartel x binding?
I use a 21.5’ stance. 24 degrees in front, -6 in back. How should you ‘center’ your stance? My board has a reference stance, but how should I shift the bindings? I feel like my back binding is too far to the rear of the board. I am not a park rider yet, and am constantly trying to adjust my stance.
Hey I’ve finally got to the stage of buying my own board and can’t wait to test it out in January. I’ve gone for a DC PLY hybrid camber board with union strata binding and dc control dual boa boots. Do you think I’ve made a good choice for my first time gear? Have no idea to properly set my board up and find what I like but this video and my holiday will hopefully sort that 😀 thanks
I can my seem to get my angles stance right after a few tries. I know it had a lot to do with getting used to my new board and being an intermediate rider, but the factory holes definitely feel like too wide of a stance for me.
You’re board must be a lot longer too he is only 5’5 when I Hurd that my jaw dropped for his body type he makes it look so effortless and easy 😂 6’2 215 sounds like a challenge keep it up tho Brodie
I’m also 6’2” and started in the 90’s riding and instructing on an asym alpine board posi posi with hard boots. Switched to soft boots and less aggressive posi posi for many years (not as instructor) but have now been instructing for 8 seasons riding 15 -15 23” wide typically on a 164 wide camber board. Took some adjustment but now love the versatility, improved range of motion, and much easier switch riding.
What about stance being closer or farther from front? My board only has 6 holes for each foot so do I choose to be closer to the nose of the board or farther? Very helpful tips! Thank you!
@tommiebennett. Hey Tommie, I'm happy with my stance (free style) but the question I have is my board length. I want more control from my board and currently use a board that is 153cm in length. I'm 5'4" and think my board is too long. Can you give me some suggestions? I want to try Burton Stepon
I’ve got mine at 9 n -9 riding regular . But tommy, when I try to ride switch , that front (ride) leg just won’t give . I don’t feel agile at all. Any thoughts?
Most cambers have at least a little nose lift, some have early rises to help with that. There might be sth with the arc that gives some spring tension while navigating pow (since it does in normal riding))
The funnest boards I've ridden in powder have S camber or setback camber and are tapered and directional. You can ride true twin camber boards in powder ok but you get more leg burn, not as much float, and are more likely to tomahawk.
EST is not Channel. Those are reflex bindings on channel, EST bindings can ONLY be used on channels (in reply to the deleted comment that says Tommie used EST bindings😅)
So let’s say you’re watching this video on the toilet… look down at your feet right now. That’s a great place to start and go hit the park!😂 Add just a few degrees towards the front of your board, and go ride the entire mountain with comfort and style! You’re welcome.
@@tommiebennett huge honor sir, added the comment bc you put a vid of him while talking about how +/+ is good for carving🤙🏻 Super impressive that he and you carve like that with duck stances
What i've learned over the years is to dedicate a slow day on the hill (maybe with a new person) and play with width vs angle vs highback angle to really learn what works. Sometimes you find with your fitness level you can adjust your stance.
I have a Rosignol sashimi direction bored I absolutely love it. Unfortunately here on the East Coast we don’t get enough snow I feel like I’m curious to if you ride on the East too or on the west I feel like on the east I have to ride more +12 to -9 to adapt to the harsh ice over here but thinking about trying a posi posi stance what do you think?
@@dmart9642 I live in the Austrian Alps so we get a variety of conditions but mostly good snow... posi posi makes carving way easier for me. Try going +18/+3... not a drastic change but might take a little getting used to.
When you‘re doing squats and after finding the appropriate one, how do you measure the stance? From middle toe to middle toe? From middle of the ankle to the middle of the other ankle? Because depending of where you will measure you will get different results. Thx! 👍
Most Excellent! I was playing about with discs on a channel and two older regular hole boards (Process, Custom and Flow Whiskey.. such a useful video and overhead shots make binding issues so much clearer. PS I’m trying to improve big time and I’m 71 on 3/17/24!

Thanks for this tipps, always good to get some insights from others how to find out sertain things, even though I am a Snowboarder since a longtime. I have also been a Vertskater for over 20 years (now I still skate, but don't have the needed power anymore to ride Vertramps). This is why my stance is more like max. a +9 and a -6 or -9. 😊
Angles can also be affected by your personal bone and joint structure. I am slightly toed-in when I walk, so I ride +12, -3 because more separation (example +15, -6) leads to sore knees for me. I think the drills you show for determining stance width should be used for determining stance angles as well; the guiding principle is that snowboarding shouldn't hurt at the end of a long day, other than plain muscle soreness. Additionally, riding posi-posi at some point affects width - 30 years ago I was riding +45, +30 because the board I was learning on was so narrow the toe and heel drag killed me otherwise. My stance was about 17" rather than the 22" I used once I got on a board wide enough for my size 13 feet.
@3:38 Does Tommie mean -3 or positive 3? I think he is saying to go either 0 or NEGATIVE 3 but it's not 100% clear and I would really like to know so I can set up my board for tomorrow :(
