- Braking is without a doubt one of the most important skills you need to learn on a motorcycle. In this video we go over the basics of using the front and rear brakes, as well as using them together.

Passed my MOD1 today in the worst weather imaginable. The rain was coming from the air, the ground and sideways. Roll on MOD2 and better weather. Thanks for the vids 👍🏽
I must say I have been in the habit of using engine braking. But it was pointed out to me that a huge benefit of using the brakes was not necessarily the effectiveness, but that it is the best and most reliable was of informing other road users behind you that you're slowing down - with the brake light. Until then, that hadn't crossed my mind.
I also use the rear brake a lot, when coming to a stop at a junction or a set of lights i tend to be front brake, a bit of rear then east off the front when under 10mph and just use the rear as the bike comes to a stop, find the front of the bike doesn't dip when it stops doing this
I failed mod 2 yesterday with a major - in that for the first 200m of the ride my right foot was accidentally resting on the rear brake and setting the brake light on. And now this video pops up
Just taking my Mod 2 and felt I needed some more technical input. Stumbled on your channel and have seen a number of your vids. I'm amazed at how much I've learned from your teachings (and do question why I'm not learning them from my instructor ?!)
Thank you so much - hugely appreciated ;-)
Great video, as always, independent braking makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for posting that. I'll be out on the local industrial estate tonight, putting it in to practice. Passed my motorcycle theory test this morning so I'm going to spend a few months on the 125, getting good habits before I go for the Mod 1 & 2.
Appreciate that, Terry. Congrats on the theory test. Always good to get that out the way. Practicing on a 125 a great way to start. That's exactly what I did and I personally think it makes a huge difference in not only your riding, but your confidence before moving onto a bigger bike.
Thanks for the vids and tips'n'tricks, they are much appreciated. I passed my Mod 1 last week and I've got my Mod 2 on the 15th of this month, I canny wait as you scotts would say👍
Thanks man. Congrats on that MOD 1 pass. That's awesome you've got a date for MOD 2, I'm sure you'll nail it bud. 🤜🤛
I passed my unrestricted mod 2 today and part of the reason why is your epic helpful videos, you should consider if being an instructor would suit you as you’re good at it, cheers mate!
Thank you mate! So glad you passed. 🤜🤛
Good stuff dude. :D I'm still some months away from my test (not booked yet) but will be hard at work on my 125 ;) Thank you for your advice and tips. Great videos by the way. Keep it up and ride safe!
Cheers bud. 🤜🤛
That's for posting. Again this has not been discussed in depth at my riding school.
That's really strange, Garry. Why they wouldn't teach that is crazy. Learning to use brakes properly is one of the first things they should really teach their students.
Awesome info as usual, CBT this friday, last time I did it was like 25 years ago ha ha
Cheers, Doug. That's awesome mate. If you've done it before you'll pick it back up no problem. Have fun on Friday. 🤜🤛
Nice video buddy! I’m couple of weeks of my mod 1 then mod 2 straight after :) great tips and great videos
Thanks mate. All the best for your tests. 🤜🤛
Great video as always. Watched several of your mod2 vids over weekend and passed my test yesterday! The advice and explanation you gave in those vids was invaluable in helping me pass and gain my A license! I'm still watching, keep it up! 👍
Appreciate that, Jonathan. Congrats on the pass. Well done bud. 🤜🤛
Thanks for this video, it has been very useful and I’m sure it will help me get through my mod 1 in a few weeks time. Just hope it doesn’t rain during my mod 1
Can’t say how much I’m loving the motorcycling.
Glad you found it helpful, Craig. Yeah riding a bike is very addictive. Once you start you'll be hooked for life. All the best for you tests. 🤜🤛
As my motorcycle training starts tomorrow I’ve been taking into account the tips you explain especially on the emergency stop. One question I have is at what point do you close the clutch to prevent stalling the bike ? This is something I’m not sure whether it’s at the same time as you stop or just after.
@@craig9143 You want to pull in the clutch just before the stops. Don't do it earlier as that's called coasting. Coasting give you less control of the bike. And obviously don't do it once the bikes stopped as you'll probably stall it. 🤜🤛
Great videos, very useful. I’m considering doing my test, so I’m taking this all in
All the best when you go for your test bud. 🤜🤛
Argh Mod 1 in just over a week. So nervous! Your videos are helping, thank you!
Glad the videos are helping mate. All the best for your mod 1 man. 🤜🤛
@@MotoEcosse aww cheers! 🤞🏻
@@MotoEcosse Mod 1 Passed with zero faults! Thanks in part to your videos! Bring on the MOD 2 (beginning of March)! Thanks dude!
@@wavecreatures congrats mate. All the best for your mod 2. 🤜🤛
Great video very helpful 👍 Thanks for the tips👍
Great channel
I've been using my brakes in corners for a few weeks now and I must say that I feel a lot more in control of my speed than I do with just engine breaking
Absolutely. Good braking is a priceless skill. 🤜🤛
Another super video, thanks! Funnily, the emergency braking on my CBT, was the thing that came naturally to me. In normal riding I was constantly resting my foot on the rear brake without realising! Practice is the key and get that muscle memory going.
Looking forward to your future videos around Scotland. It's way too long since I've been up there!
Take it easy now, 😁
Appreciate it man. 🤜🤛
Any thoughts on foot position for the rear brake? Do you hover your toe over pedal, angle your toe outwards away from the pedal or move you foot backwards on the peg until you need to use the brake? Or does it depend on the bike and rider? Just curious 😁
I think every rider has their own preference really. I always ride with the ball of my foot on the peg, then move onto brake pedal when I use it. I also do the same with the gears.
@@MotoEcosse Cheers man 👍 I'll experiment when I get my bike... hopefully not too far away. My instructor suggested angling my toe out, but that didn't feel especially natural or comfortable. Ball on the peg sounds a better option for me. We shall see.
@@DoomNedwob yeah it's the way I've always ridden and the way I was taught. I always think I've you angle your foot too far out and you're leaning the bike around a corner, I'd hate to clip the road with my toes. 😫
Got my Mod 2 this coming Wednesday, been giving all your vids a watch as there very helpful for useful tips. Hopefully smash it 😃
Glad you found them useful, Harry. All the best for Wednesday. 🤜🤛
My test got delayed till the 10th January due to examiner getting covid, so giving your videos another go over before Monday :) Your videos are by far the best I’ve found at explaining everything clearly and in detail. cheers 😀
Good content well presented thanks.
Great videos mate and ive just become your 800th subscriber 🖐😎
LEGEND 🙌 🤜🤛
These videos are helping me through my test got my mod 1 and mod 2 in August fingers crossed it goes well ive got a suzuki bandit 600 for first bike too 😎
@@kidzmurals All the best for both Mods. I had all my lessons and Mods on a bandit 600. Great bike. 🤜🤛
Cheers mate will let you know as soon as ive done it mate thanks
Hi.
Listening to your wisdom on Braking.
Regarding the Mod 1 test,
if you have to take it on a wet or very wet day does the Emergency stop and Hazard avoidance manoeuvres for example have to be performed with the same stopping distance as on a dry day. ????? Any leeway given for conditions.?????
Started riding, love the channel
Cheers
John L.
Glasgow.
Hi, John. Wet conditions always have to be taken with caution. This is something all schools should teach. With mod 1 speeds though in a controlled area, the stopping distance shouldn't be affected as much as public roads,. Whether the test centre will allow any leeway depends on the centre I guess. The instructor at your local school should have a good idea of what you can expect on those wetter days. 🤜🤛
@@MotoEcosse Thankyou.
Much Appreciated.
Hope you continue with videos as they are incredibly helpful to a number of us. (Roundabouts especially like.
Hi Moto, another great video. At 6:25, you say in MOD 1 "if you lock your wheel it's an instant fail". What about if you take MOD 1 on a bike with ABS. This is then a non-issue, correct?
Appreciate it bud. Yeah if you were to do MOD 1 on a big with ABS then it would be difficult to lock the rear wheel making the emergency brake easier. 🤜🤛
But what if ur going down a hill. What breaks would u use then?
You can use either. Obviously if corners are involved then be extra careful. Braking extra early is key.
@@MotoEcosse thank you
So braking at a junction= use front to start, add some rear brake then ease off the front and finish with the rear? I’ve also read some people brake using both but at a ratio say 70/30….would you suggest this?
Sometimes the rear isn't even needed. Depends on the situation and the speed. For moving through slow traffic i.e less than 10mph or so back brake alone is fine. For slowing down for junctions I'd usually use the front brake and apply the back brake if I feel I need to scrub off a bit extra speed, as for the ratio 70/30 is absolutely fine. When using both brakes together, you always want to use more front than back. 🤜🤛
I have linked breaks, makes me lazy lol
lol I've never used them. Must be an odd feeling?
😂 short video on braking....20 minutes..😂...Great info though but not "short"
