    While the 1996 version was excellent, the 2002 release of the Resident Evil remake is the definitive version, arguably the best Resident Evil game, and one of the greatest games of all time.

    It’s still a masterpiece and I doubt any RE will ever top it. As underused as Jill has become in the franchise,at least she’s a main protagonist in my all time favorite RE. She and Barry are the best RE duo!!

    • @mtb5431
      @mtb5431 2 года назад +19

      @Gibram Rivera Thank you! Chris was alright at first but all his stories suck now. Jill has always been awesome though and unlike Chris, there is a gold mine of story potential with her still.

    • @mtb5431
      @mtb5431 2 года назад +5

      @Gibram Rivera I agree. I’m completely sick of both characters but I’d rather play the games then watch CGI and Leon is only in all the latter. It’s real hard to get excited about the next RE game knowing it will probably just be another Chris story. Especially since they get worse and worse.
      Tbh I never minded Chris showing up to save the day in CV cause Capcom wasn’t constantly shoving Chris down our throats then. It was only his second appearance. Besides Claire’s section still better anyway.
      I can only imagine how terrible a CV remake would be though with all the Chris pandering now. Claire’s section would probably be only 20 min.

    Played it again recently, its so atmospheric.
    What a lot of people don't realise is this game is at heart a puzzle with everything being a trade off. Do you use your ammo to clear an area? Do you take the hit to save the ammo? Even what do you carry as a load out? With the crimson heads I'm very diligent about head shots and burning zombies. In short this game has you thinking about your resources in a way other titles seldom do.

I’ve vested RE in under 2 hours and tried all the difficulties and every time I played it felt newer and if I was falling deeper in a horror-filled play. This game doesn’t get the credit it needs, it’s the best!!!!

      100% agree!! No RE game is ever gonna top it. It’s nice to be able to retreat to this masterpiece as RE gets more and more convoluted with each new sequel. Back to when Umbrella was scary. Best atmosphere in the series and nothing comes close to matching the terror of Lisa Trevor or the Crimson Heads.

      @the ugly duckling Real survival is a very cool game mode indeed. Although I always save Chris and Barry/Jill and Rebecca (don't ask me why). I've seen some people who complained about how it's too hard, even though it's really not that bad. You can bypass most of the enemies, and even skip some of the bosses. The biggest pain of the mode is just the item management period. But unless you're going for that sub-3 hour achievement, it shouldn't be that big of a problem.

    I feel that one of the things that makes RE1, REmake, and RE2 so great is the lack of an "in your face" antagonist. Yes, there are bosses that must be dealt with, some on more than one occasion, but they're not necessarily "bad guys".
    It wasn't until the very end of RE1/REmake that Wesker is revealed to be the "bad guy", and his being dealt with by Tyrant was glorious. RE2 was done similarly in that the interactions with "bad guys" is always brief (Chief Irons and Annette). Doing this kept it from feeling like a parody of many movie tropes.
    RE3 started to change the formula with the barrage of Nemesis attacks, and the Nikolai interactions. Capcom did at least keep it from spoiling the video game experience. From Code Veronica to today's titles there are an overabundance of interactions with the "bad guys"; most of which turn into the bad guy monologue with no resolution being made, and a ridiculous foot chase ensues for the entirety of the game, full of near misses, knick of time arrivals, and "we're too late"s. The bad guys keep getting quirkier and quirkier (i.e. Irving), making the whole thing feel like a bad movie. That's my experience, anyway.

    • @cambalache9139
      @cambalache9139 2 года назад +1

      Never thought about that but yeah, having a clear antagonist makes averything more campy and less serious, though I dont really mind it. I really enjoy leons back and forth with salazar, krauser and sadler. Also in wesker first phase in the end of re5 you literaly use his shades against him which is hillarious.

    This game (the GC remake in 2002) when I was 11 was my first true horror experience. It scared me so effectively (and was hard to play back then) that I finally played it to completion several years later (18 I think) and digging through notes and finding new terrors and surprises around every corner made me fall madly in love with the series as a whole and helped me appreciate RE4 so much more. The HD version of REmake is the pinnacle of “how I remembered it”. It was done with almost as much tender care as the actual remake itself. Some textures got skipped out but even in 2021 I have to say this game is exactly how I remember it. Borderline realistic (all things considered) and it STILL is the standard by which any horror game should be held to.
    Side note: despite my history with this game I never played all the way as Chris. Doing that now makes it feel like I’m playing for the first time, again. Having forgotten a couple of things makes it all fresh. The atmosphere, music, and design all culminate into a game I could recommend until the day I die. I will one day even have my unborn son give it a go. See if he picks Chris or Jill, panic and scream and quit as I did just to come back and be brave and make it through. A timeless classic that I hope is always playable

For starters he need less healing items and can collect only 3 firearms (not counting second shotgun and flamethrower). And I think there is less items to pick up in general with most being pistol clips, while for Jill there is 3 types of grenade rounds. REmake is THE Definitive version of classic style survival horror, but with all the extra visual and gameplay bells and whistles. Though there are other great titles from this era, such as Silent Hill 2 and 3, this one checks all the boxes from the PS1 era. Fixed camera angles - check! Item management - check! Puzzles - check! Tank controls (should you choose to use them...) - check! Loading times hidden behind slowly opening door animations - check?! Plus Jill looks adorable in her STARS outfit!

    What makes this game a true masterpiece above the rest is that it stays true to the original, it enhanced it instead of completely changing it, what the hell was Capcom thinking? Why didn't they do the same with the other remakes? People have gotten it into their heads that remakes have to be completely different from the original now, both for games and movies. Following this new format is how you end up with disasters like re3 remake, that, greed, and laziness. Re2 remake was kinda cool too but this game tops it very easily.

    • @aleisinwndrlen7113

      I have always thought that the reason REmake is very much unbeatable in quality is simply because it was made by the same guy who *made the original game* (Shinji Mikami). He had a clear vision of what to do or what not to do. He used the significantly more advanced technology of 2002 to implement things that he just wasn't able to in 1996. So instead of cutting out things from the original, the team added stuffs *in* . They didn't change the characters, nor did they remove the puzzles or even cut out bosses or other enemies. They only added stuffs in and expanded upon existing assets. THAT is how you properly remake a game.

    Just got done replaying the HD Edtion of this on ps5 having played it all those years ago on GameCube. Man I forgot just how hard this game is even on Normal difficulty. You are right about the tactical gameplay loop that at first forces you to plan ahead but once you hit your stride you enter a flow state where what seemed to be forced early on just becomes instinct. And that is top tier level design that in directly teaches you adapt to over come.

    • @bbbbbbb51
      @bbbbbbb51 Год назад

      That's actually the biggest point from this video that I entirely disagree with. I think it only applies on repeat playthroughs, which is a big issue with reviews like this. They all are written with the value of being able to have foresight. The first time experience with REmake can never be captured again. In my own case, there is no flow state & there is no "planning ahead" as you have no clue what to expect. I write this as someone currently doing my first playthrough & it's taken me months mainly because I usually get so frustrated with having to backtrack, not having the right key item on me, or being completely lost that I just walk away from it for weeks at a time. I'm trying my absolute hardest to not use any guides, but so far I had to cave with the dog whistle. Couldn't for the life of me figure out where to blow it. Maybe I have brain damage, but games with logic or quantum based puzzles don't trip me up.
      I'm enjoying it more & more as what fundamentals the game drives home is becoming clearer. Also, dodging zombies is just rewarding. Still, I've yet to see a review of this game that isn't painfully obviously tainted by multiple playthroughs.

    10/10.. but i must say.. In terms of gameplay loop, flow and item mgt.. CVX is damn close.. I mean not giving Ricardo the hemostatic medicine will f u in the long run. But its totally optional in game.. I can't really think of any other RE that will hinder you that much for not backtracking.. Saving richard is a close 2nd in the remake.. And giving barry back his magnum is up there too.. But it doesn't necessarily hinder your experience.. But the stress of flight or fighting zombies in the remake is 2nd to none.. Because you know the outcome.. Either your gonna get a critical headshot.. " unlikely" Waste ammo by taking them down. In turn.. Being forced to burn them.. And if you don't have any kerosene on you..You have to back track to refill an already limited supply throughout the mansion..
    Now in remake 2.. The flight or Fight aspect.. Is Greatly increased.. And we all know why.. Zombies are taking anywhere to 6 -10 rounds to stay down.. And they bite and damage you easily.. Making you re think your entire strategy.. Not to mention the lickers roaming the halls with deadly precision.. If your caught.. And usually there are also zombies in those same halls as well.. At this point im dripping in fear to even open that door..

    I know exactly what you're talking about when you describe that "flow" state. What few reviewers of this game ever mention is just how the Spencer Mansion in particular, accommodates this. It's in the mansion's design. Having the mansion divided into two wings, with both first and second floor entrances is key. This allows the player a great level of freedom of choice in how they want to tackle things. Resources are finite, but with a lil' extra backtracking, whole rooms and enemies can be straight up skipped. This allows the player the ability to prioritize which enemies are most worth removing to create a consistently safe path they can use to traverse one side of the mansion to the other. It is for this main reason, that I don't think the series has ever outdone the original Spencer Mansion. Don't get me wrong, the series has plenty of truly great interconnected locations in it's catalogue, but few reach the level of freedom of choice that the Spencer Mansion presents. The RPD comes close, but still doesn't quite get there. Whereas, something like the Training Facility from RE0 is comparatively far more linear and confining...

    i play REmake every year and im actually in the middle of my yearly run now. i agree with probably everything you said. i tried to come back to other re games many times and while i can sometimes finish them, usually i get bored at some point. not in REmake tho, here i constantly have to stop myself from playing it again and again.
    there was a time around its original release where i could spend whole weekend finishing it 5+ times. i have 5 different "gameplans" for whole game where i pick one according to the amount of heads i blown in the mansion hallways (basically if i blew away head in one hall i clear it and use as my safe pathway, excluding the ones where hunters appear later or zombies come through window at some point - these are cursed and not worth to clear them).
    for this year i decided to change my gameplay and this time i play 2 saves, real survival, no chest run while trying to finish it under 3h, which makes me restart parts from last save (only 2 saves to do so i restard huge chunks of the game over and over), to plan my perfect run to the next save, ive done 1st save at the begining of residence now and my next will be at the begining of lab. Tension os cranked up to the maximum this way

      @@drakkor7339 I would like re2remake more too but it has some things I really didnt want from the remake and no thats not the camera style because thats usually why people hate re2 and re3 remakes, the reason why I am disappointed with re2remake is scenario stories are more boring than fun and the fact that they included mr x even in scenario a that he didnt exist in original re2 scenario a.. I am also not happy that some enemies didnt make a return to remake such as crows, spiders and some lab enemies.. If I never played original re2 I probably could love re2remake but since I have i fail to love re2remake unfortunately and knowing we will never get re2 and re3remakes its truly heartbreaking because we will not get another remake that was like re1remake.. I dont care if they made the remake I always wish in over the shoulder camera as long as they made those things I was expecting and many others expected

    This is still, by far the best Resident Evil game ever. The original 2 and 3 closely follow and as much as the 2 remakes we just got are great fun and 2R is the first game in a long time that actually scared me, they don't stand up atmosphere wise to this, nor do 7 and 8. I always find myself replaying 2002 HD on the ps4 and not getting bored. Would love to see remakes of 2 and 3 with this treatment.

    I wish Capcom would go back to their roots making these kind of RE games again. The camera angles didn't bother me like they did to most casual gamers, I just learned to live with it and get use to it.

I am replaying it now as Jill, as I started off with Chris first. And mannn that was difficult ! But I pulled through! First play through was on normal now im playing on very very easy as Jill. Just trying to take it all in

    Well let’s see:
    It keeps the feel of the original in that the map and hallways are the “same.”
    It’s not a carbon copy of the original and adds new elements to keep it fresh as well as rearranging some elements to troll the crap of of the people who played the original
    It retains the fixed camera and uses it to great effect while also having an emphasis on lighting.
    The music is BEAUTIFULLY redone
    They changed the script but decided to maintain some of the campiness of the original as to remind us of what came before.
    All in all this is the product of a production team that KNEW what made the first game special and wanted to preserve it while also adding in a new layer of depth to make the game have so much more replay ability. I am somewhat new to the franchise but after playing through so many RE games in the past year this one is still the definition of what RE is to me.

    I've always wondered what it would be like if the 3D characters were replaced with hand drawn animated illustrated character sprites? I mean it would take a lot of design and animation work because you'd have to have a lot of frames of animation for the sprites and make them look consistent and in line with the perspective of the backgrounds especially when transitioning between backgrounds but over all I think it would look cool.

    I think its worth mentioning the importance of playing with the classic controls. The fear deciding how to move away from threats with classic controls is true horror gameplay. Not to mention its the most enjoyable control scheme to master in all of gaming. Flow state is also a great way to put it. My own term for this is Resi- Fever. Terrifying exploration laced with puzzles and constant stressful options and decision making in so many facets. Greatest game ever made!
