All of these guys on this list inspired the hell out of me back in the day to build my own DIY homebuild. I distinctly remember your article back in the day. I remember all of these guys builds vividly. This video is so nostalgic! Hahaha. Ended up with a 50 mph 10kW bike built in 2013.
Thanks for putting me on that list Eric (#6 ). I don't ride any more, but I still love engineering and continue to do controller development and am experimenting with a BMS design.
I gotta say, I really like this Eric guy. Someone who clearly says exactly what he thinks and best, he really - REALLY knows his ebikes and clearly has been at this many years. This is EXACTLY why someone should buy a Luna bike, because they are made to be a great bike and not a bike made for profit. Meaning great components and quality parts. Although I also wonder if I should not try and build my own. This is obviously the real way to learn. Hmm
Hey Eric, I just ordered an X2 from you 3 or 4 days ago! Didn’t know boo about Luna. I saw one of your bikes on a RUclips “Best MidDrive video” and took a chance! Having watched this clip, I feel a lot better about my choice! I’m a 65yr retired Animator and former recording engineer. Successful in both! Over the years I learned that the one ingredient that can not be substituted is passion! Like you showed here! Thx man..
Eric (and Ashley) Thank you for your leadership and surrounding yourself with visionaries and quality people. May your enterprise continue to help this world a better place for all. Perhaps this Spring will be one of my many e-Bike builds via Luna Cycles distributorships. Wishing everyone well with "Happy Trails". Mojo
You blew me away! You are amazing. You instantly made a Luna believer outta me. I'm a life long moto racer, and now have this huge passion for e bikes! Not electrically trained but mechanically trained, and have win many moto races. Would be honored to be your friend on Facebook or another form of social media. Im working on a purchase of a Luna soon! Thanks!
Well no ego here which I appreciate, you sound like a down to earth kinda person, mentioning all these others and their work. Makes me appreciate purchasing something from you like the Naked oh yeah looking forward among other things.
Eric, excellent historical perspective! Thank you so much for sharing and giving me so much insight to where you come from and a lot of these other folks. I'm primarily a guy that likes to ride dirt trails, documents my rides on RUclips, a Mech Engr, and I considered getting a Sur Ron in December, but unfortunately I couldn't justify getting it (maybe some day) because I already have the high power Cycles typhoon. It's rather brute force and primitive, but it gets the job done. I also ride KTM 500 motorcycle off road and mountain bikes. Just last week I purchased a specialized turbo levo expert. I'm really fond of all the nerdy types that brought the ebike forward.
Eric, very cool list of genius innovators. I first heard about Luke in a story Loz Blain did and his crazy ring he made for his wife, and taking on Teslas at the race track with the Death bike. Congrats on you and your team’s Apollo. Is there a future in axial flux motors for mid drive bikes?
I bought the Lunacycle Wolf Alite 500 hard tail in 2018 for a base price of $2k and $150 Shipping. I opted for the gear sensor and a Brooks saddle with a bodyfloat shock which brought total price to around $2500. The waterproof battery, tool kit, and the 80% setting on the charger was a plus. The off the shelf replacement parts available from Lunacycle and 3rd party sources was a selling point for me. Separately, I bought extended quick-release skewers for front and rear racks with 1.5" rubber-lined pipe clamps for front fork mounts. The only modification I needed was to get two rubber-lined adjustable steel bands to hold the motor to the frame from slipping down and two rubber-lined adjustable steel bands to hold the battery firmly in place. A dump would spill out the battery. I weigh 250+ pounds and regularly carry 50-75 pounds of added cargo or groceries up a hell hill and it works for me in an everyday since. I don't use it for traditional mountain-biking (not with open-ended fork and frame wheel mounts). I had mixed success with Slipnot tire chains in the winter. They work great on snow and smooth ice, but fall flat on me for rough, uneven ice. I need that extra torque for the hills, not necessarily the speed. I'm pleasantly surprised that everything is holding up so well considering the low cost, kudos to lunacycle. I'm excited about upcoming HHO applications in the news, like the Hydrogen solar panel. I'm saving up for an electic battery-powered Arcimoto FUV (ideally wish for something like an HHO dune buggy for the beach and waves ) to use in the winter months with an extended range that can get me up to the slopes and back. I hope Lunacycle looks more into trikes and HHO applications in the future (ones that don't require motor vehicle licensing). The ones I see out there are underpowered for hilly areas.
I have been following you guys for years. I would love LOVE to see you guys make an aerodynamic velomobile that could take passengers and be a real car replacement. All the velomobiles are single seater and have rinky dinky motors, and all of the passenger ebikes (ELF 2FR, PEBL) have terrible aerodynamics.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't your website offer a "bottom bracket" plate of some sort for those of us who want to custom build our own e bike frames using a midnmount motor? For some reason I remember seeing something along those lines but can't find it again.
Very Very interesting review! Thanks for puting me too! I now do 50/50 e-bike(NYX) and e-moto(Zero) where i still boost and pimp both of these. I am now working at Rocky Mountain, designing their next battery gen and general electrical architecture. Alot of fun!!
I'm looking to build my own electric quad pedal bike. I need to find out more about motors I'm looking for the best motor for the money and that's because I'm a disabled veteran and I'm only getting $500 a month so I have to keep the price down .I'm looking for any suggestions for what motor for my pedal quad .thanks
Thank you for the great history I never knew. I did my first conversion as a noob on a Trek 4500 with the bafang 750 w 48v-10 ah which is kind of weak the battery. I should have gotten the cyclone & larger amp battery.
I got the Enduro fame from you guys I put a 72 volt 3000 watt hub motor in it battery is 72 volt 26.1 amp hour and I can get 56 mph on it. Thanks to you have that frame on sale when I got it. Thanks again.
Nice grumpybirds hat. Some of those remind me of the original Cyclones my boss was fitting for friends etc. 10 years ago. As a conventional bicycle mechanic, I cringe when I see them, but boy did they go like rocket ships.
great video there is a new frontier and Industry in the E bike world for innovative folks like this guy. I am impressed he helps folks on his list and not be jealous he promotes them as much as he promotes Luna cycles . what a nice guy and Luna cycles is tops for sure.
Dude you are awesome. Great story teller and great stories. I bought a cool ebike from Unimoke Germany last year and I love it. But I cannot wait to try some of yours, will be looking into it this year.
7:01 "Electric bikes are so primitives" It is exactly what I think Eric! We still have to see well designed aerodynamic bikes which could reach 50 miles per hour with (less than) 1 Kw 💪😎
it's my favorite mad E-scientist Eric Awesome video. Luna should be on that list. You guys did carbon fiber fat bike 2000w mid drive. Practical & elegant all wrapped up in one . So unique. Speed is awesome but it also kills.
Could you please advise me on an e-mountain bike. I have zero interest in speed; but I have a trail or (of 100 litre capacity), which I use for wild camping. Thetefore I am only interested in maximum torgue. I know the Haibike 'Flyon' range now has 120 torgue power. Can you advise me on other available and affordable models. Thank you.
man, this brings back memories. well done. well said. miss all y'all... gotta say, the apollo is looking fine too and has me licking my chops. might be time soon.. peace, all. GCinDC
Mine does 70 mph and I know I don't have one of the fastest ones. I wonder how long ago he wrote the article. I run 22s (92.4v) and 200A through a sabvoton unlocked controller.
2016 they made throttles a no no in the uk . what's that all about ? you guys have the same in the US? long live mid drives . I love my 4kw 60v cyclone with its 100amp kelly mini controler . only does 40mph on its 44 tooth chainrings an 24inch wheels . white industries freewheel for the chainrings is a must though . doesn't wobble like the cheep chinese tat i got with the kit I have been watching you guys for a few years and i like your progres. thumbs up to all you inervators out there.
Great video, just seeing this all for the first time and learning a lot as I decide which bike to purchase. The one thing that bothers me about this is all is the misinformation around environmental benefit. I've been working with 18650 batteries in other applications for over a decade now and we're just kidding ourselves when we talk about "the environmental benefit". It's actually a net negative on the environment. The vast majority of your batteries are being manufactured by countries with no regard for the environment. They only care about a low price point. Think about the chemicals and byproducts of the manufacturing process, as well as the credibility of any information being disclosed from countries like China. There are also no where near enough electric bikes out there to reduce emissions levels to the point where it makes up for that negative impact. And when we think we're doing the right thing and recycle our old batteries, they're all being improperly disposed of - poisoning the planet and ultimately us.
A little seasoning of irony here, but *Cedric Lynch* looks remarkably like the character *Gordon **_Lunas_* from a Rick and Morty ["Morty's Mind Blowers"] - google image him.
Every time I go to buy a kit from Luna everything is sold out..bad for business. I'll never buy anything from somewhere that is always sold out..get a better supplyer!!
Make a suggestion to luna to use your suppliers and hook them up with those companies. They are only 3 years old and still trying to figure things out. They are the only company putting bikes of this caliber out there for insanely low prices. Comparatively speaking.
I learned from all these guys the Orginal electric bike and Endlessphere guys and the Orginal Superkids shop that was selling the1000-2000w Bmc Hub and middrive Mac motors for lashout scooters and and Cristalite controllers not to forget electric scooter works twin Schwinn Scooter bmc motor set up 🤔
Eric why did my bike never make it on there. My BMX was built before lukes death bike and It topped out at 53mph on the flats! Luke will tell you all about it. I just find it funny that slower bikes made the top 10....
His slovenly, unprofessional appearance is EXACTLY how his sales and customer service departments are operated. They try to rip people off, then show absolutely Zero regard for helping customers or making anything right. Why? Because they were trying to cheat you to begin with! He’s too much of a coward to do business the right way. Trust me, take your business elsewhere. You will regret trying to order from these people! Btw Eric, I LOVE MY NEW SEGWAY ITS A SUPERIOR PRODUCT ANYWAY!

no axial flux mid drives are only for nut jobs ;)
I don't normally comment but I wanted to say thanks, this was really interesting, especially Farfle's electric plane, that's amazing.

Have you come up with a controller that is variable speed? Is there anyway I can turn my controller to where it’s just not on off

How do i buy a dogati ebike?
Have a look at my bike ;) . On the trail it has to be one of the quickest 50lbs ebikes out there that has a frame mounted battery.
What about George kontopoulos out of greece ?
Well which is it? Is a 59 mph hub motor is hard to achieve? Or is it easy to throw a bunch of power at a 50 pound hub motor to achieve 59mph?
man, this brings back memories. well done. well said. miss all y'all... gotta say, the apollo is looking fine too and has me licking my chops. might be time soon.. peace, all. GCinDC
