Wow, that was a labour of love to take off all the slats to wax them individually. You must be really pleased. Glad you managed to get it booked in so soon, that was a stroke of luck. Well done 👍

If you use extra-fine steel wool to apply and polish off the Briwax, James, you will probably find you can stop it clogging in the grooves, and it gives a lovely finish. I had a pine shop in UK, and that’s all I ever used. Also, a shoe-brush works well.

Everything looks so nice, what a labor of love! (And so sorry you have to be craned out, but as usual you see the positive side of the situation!)

Really impressed at the way the bed support / shoe shelf came out. Looks really good. Also glad to hear that craning the boat out of the water won't be as horiffic as you thought it could be. Hopefully all shall be well.

Morning James. That bed bracket come shoe holder is absolutely fantastic especially using the old bed slats 🤩👍🏻 Shame about having Sloe Patrol lifted out of the cut after all the issues you had with the hull 😫 At least you’re near a boat yard that seems reasonably priced 👍🏻 So another fantastic boat lift and you’ll be able to see the underneath 🤔 Cheers Stevie 😎

James, moisture can be absorbed on the ends of the ply board, so you ought to put a sealer along all of the rough edges. Something like two part resin or oil-based paint that makes them super protected. Stops them from separating, splintering, warping, etc. The wax might also work a bit. I know it works well on regular wood, but the ply is just really porous and vulnerable on the edges.

I'm looking forward to the day (and I bet you are, too) when all the jobs are finished and you can just live on Sloe Patrol. Come to think of it--does that day ever come on a narrowboat?? I'm glad meanwhile you have time to finish some of those small jobs, take a breather and relax until after the holiday knowing that she'll be taken care of by the expert hands you've fallen into there. Cheers, James!

You just had to go and ‘Screw Up’ twice, didn’t you. 😉 Glad to hear of the plan for the first part of the year, sounds good. I like your version of ‘Wicked Game’, really fit with having to pull and reattach all of those slats. I complement your patience.

    It looks really good, James.
A quiet night in, polishing your wood. Is that a euphemism? ;o)
That's your winter moorings sorted. Hard standing at £50 a week.
    All the best, mate.

Too late, but perhaps you could use a toothbrush, preferably a dead one, on the gaps in the slats?
It's looking so good, and great to know you have a solution for the shaft work.

Any nice stencils about for spray painting your new cupboards - even your front doors? As ever a decent job done for our Advent calendar. Must look into working in London with digs @£7/day!!

Great job with the slats James, don’t think you need a live edge board there. Love your positive attitude to all your problems. Were you always like that or has restoring your narrow boat taught you that ?

  • @ianlaw6410

Many years ago I worked in a chemistry lab where we used bunsen burners to melt the wax into the old, cracked, work benches. A heat gun would probably be safer. No need to buff up

  • @flysteve100

James, would a hairdryer on the cracks not melt the wax?

Was doing some thinking tonight.......... This channel isnt just about "The Narrowboat that James built", but more like Young James's progress through life as it currently is. We sit and watch his construction projects and trials and tribulations of owning a boat. None of us wanting it to end. Im sure there is an Xmas present winging its way over to you soon :-)

Not a bad idea at all. As compared to overplating the hull …. this should be a bargain. Let’s try to remember each other’s names …so that we can nudge a couple hundred subscribers or so. 😉
