- A number of my viewers have requested that I review these two brands of cheese puffs. Generally, if I'm going to have a keto snack, it will be one of my cracker recipes with some cheese and maybe a handful of nuts. Cheese puffs are simply not something I crave. Fortunately, one of my viewers sent me these to try out.
In this video Connor and I try both Hilo Life and School Yard Snacks cheese puffs and give you our verdict. Are either of them any good?

I am SO with You! I felt the same thing. If they are pushing anything that hard with the obvious BS "chips have already sold out X times" -
If that were true they wouldn't need to advertise at all!
The cereal one is SO stupid. I agree - Never would buy their products based on the stupid ads.

Thank you Steve. I've heard so many positive things about the schoolyard snacks. Adding yours to those, I think I can just skip them. I'm very disappointed about HiLo, there nacho cheese tortilla chips are wonderful and I've been looking forward to these, but I can also say I can just skip them and just buy another bag of their chips from Costco.
I'm with you on the tortilla-style chips. They're the best of the Low-carb/keto type tortilla chips out there.

I love the Hilo Tortilla chips I got at Costco. I bought $100 worth (aprox. 2 year+ supply- since they were *death star'd).
Costco isn't going to have them anymore? Man, that makes me SAD

I actually like Schoolhouse snacks. It might be because I get the snacky snack satisfaction, low carb & high protein. I totally agree that it definitely sticks to my teeth. The best flavors are BBQ & Sour cream & onion. So that’s just my 2 Pennies!

I ordered a box of the School Yard Snack puffs and ended up returning them. They were awful! Haven’t tried the Hilo brand but I DO love their nacho chips.
I am really enjoying Conner's insights. He has a good way of seeing things & seems much more comfortable with the process.

I’ve seen the ads for the schoolyard snacks well over a dozen times and I thought about trying them but then they were way too expensive I figured if I’m gonna break down and eat some cheese puffs I would just get the real thing
12 bags for $21.99 on Amazon. I don't like whisps and will try Hilo. I like baked to a delicate crunch, not crackly crunch. After 6 years on keto, I'm hoping my memory has faded and these will be awesome. LOL Thanks for the review.
Interesting review, I do like Hi Lo products on occasion, but I think they are very expensive, and I agree with your final recommendation, except even better, make your own.
I was so disappointed in Hilo cheese puffs. I like most Hilo products but these. Never tried School House and probably won't now. Thanks for taking one for the team.
Love this channel Steve. I've been wanting to try school yard snack, but really expensive. I have bought HiLow's chips, my favorite is hot and spicy. They also have cheddar and ranch!! Not as expensive too. Love you guys. Have a blessed day!
Don't waste your money on school yard snacks. They're GROSS!
Maybe you can repurpose them for use- I had several pks of the brick oven pizza puffs hanging around, so I made chicken coating and airfried it, my non keto family devoured the chicken- the puffs themselves were not good!

Thank you both for the review. I bought the peanut butter puff balls. Not a fan. Was very disappointed. I do like the Hilo ones.
I tried school yard snacks, both flavors early into my keto journey and they were a huge disappointment. To make them worse you can only get them in large box orders of like 20 bags. I managed to only eat them over the course of that year because I hate wasting money but boy were they a chore to get through.
I agree with just eat cheese whisps or season pork rinds.
TOTALLY AGREE! Schoolyard snacks were very crunchy, but the cheese flavor which is the one I remember most was a huge disappointment. My kids didn’t like them I didn’t like them, unfortunately we just pitched what we didn’t eat which was a number of bags

I had wanted to try Schoolyard Snacks when I first started keto but their ads played CONSTANTLY on YT, FB, and then started seeing them on tv..TV.. ALL THE TIME. Same ad over and over "sold out four times this year...and..." Completely turned me off on the company and have no desire to even look to see what products they all have.
Doesn't appear that I am missing out. Thank you to you and Connor for giving both products a try for us.
Glad I saw this! I really like the Hilo chips so I was going to try these. You just saved me from throwing money in the garbage.
The cheese puffs are almost bland

I liked the school yard cheese puffs, but I really have no use for them in my daily eating, but they are far too expensive! I bought some at an overstock store in North Carolina, but I am not gonna pay the full Amazon price.

I've had the Schoolyard Snacks version. I agree wholeheartedly; they're awful. Not only that, they somehow tricked me into auto shipments and their site makes it difficult to cancel...unless they have fixed it since. I like Hilo keto tortilla chips. I have never tried their cheese puffs.
Same, it was so hard to cancel them and return the unopened second box of their horrible "chips".

If you have the auto shipments on a credit card, contact your bank and reverse the charges.

Hilo may have missed the mark here, but their nacho chips at Costco are amazing! They've disappeared now at my Costco but hopefully they'll be back.

I like Whisp but they can be $4 a bag so learned to make my own. Been snaking with those or pork rinds dipped in your salad dressing.

Thanks Steve, Like you, I hardly ever snack anymore. Really good to know this… I’ll stick to cheese wisps when I want something crunchy. Wisps are satisfying ( so I don’t mow through a whole bag) and actually taste good to me since I’m a cheese head. You have probably saved me money and disappointment too! I really trust your honest reviews, and love that you include your non keto family members on taste tests. Makes for even better testing 🙂 IMO.

You should try the Hilo Life nacho cheese chips. I've gotten addicted to those. They really remind me of Doritos.

I ordered schoolyard snacks. I had to buy a larger amount and they were extremely expensive to ship to Canada on top of the already expensive price. They arrived with ants in the shipping box. When I e-mailed them they said "Oh I hate when that happens" and did nothing. The actual product was tasteless and almost bitter with a texture that was dried out and stale right out of the package. What a waste of money. Round file. Thank you for doing these reviews, they help a lot.

'Shrewd Food' makes protein puffs totally taco flavor. The taco taste was very strong. They'd be better if they dialed down the taco intensity.
The schoolyard puffs are very hard. Hilo makes a decent tortilla chip. This review was funny thank you.
I have tried two flavors of the Schoolyard Snacks cereal (peanut butter and Cocoa) and was not impressed with either of them. Not enough PB flavor and the cocoa ones were just bitter.
I think I prefer your taste tests on items that remind me of food and you find that it's not good. It keeps me from spending money on something that really wouldn't have been good for me, even if it tasted good. But now I don't need to try them. Mostly when traveling - that's when I'm tempted most. Thank you!!!

Wow - I like the Schoolyard Snacks. The Whisps aren't even in the same category to me (I don't consider them a snack). Indeed like everything "keto friendly" nothing is like the original, but I really like the Schoolyard snacks (even their cereals)!

Recently had the hilo ones and they suck! I actually like their tortilla chips but these puffs were just not it. I havent tried the schoolyard ones but I heard they suck too and I see now that its true 😂
Hey Steve, there’s a brand we get in the U.K. called cheesies and they taste really quite good, like little cubes of parmigiana!

Haven’t tried the Hilo puffs. The Hilo nacho cheese chips are pretty good. All the School yard snacks are terrible. I got pulled in by the reviews and the more you buy the cheaper it is only to find out they only refund a small amount. I bought 80.00 in various snacks and tossed them all in the trash. I wish I saw this videos was made before I purchased the SYS!
I make my own cheese wisps to bring to parties, though I can't get them to be as crunchy as I would like. (If there are suggestions to get them crunchy, I'm all eyes! 👀)
Maybe the leftovers in the bags could be pulverized and used as a "breading" on something.
Hilo chips are amazing never tried puffs but those schoolyards I tried and threw away it was aweful
I know there are some brands of puffs that actually aren't bad. I haven't heard of these yet though.
For what it's worth, I love the School Yard Snacks cheese puffs - much less the cheddar and more the other flavors. I love the crunch and the flavor burst. Also, School Yard Snacks makes great peanut butter and chocolate cereal too. Highly recommend!

I found a case (of 12 bags) of SYS barbeque flavor puffs at a bin store for 2 dollars! I like the flavor but not enough to buy a bag at full price. They get stuck in the molars and it's not a good feeling.
Hi-Lo Doritos replacement are decent, but the texture isn't close. However, the flavor is pretty good, imho. I haven't seen these two yet but I would give it a go.

I was so pissed I spent 50 on those school yard snacks. They were not good at all. I tried my best to suck it up and eat them since I spend so much money but I couldn't do it. Ended up throwing them all a away.

Wish I had seen this about 6 months ago. However, I agree with you on the Schoolyard Snack version of Cheetos they remind me of cardboard. I got a lot of them and had a really hard time cancelling my automatic reorder. I even ended up with some sour cream flavored ones and some very hot (spicy) flavored ones, none of them tasted any good to me. Going to have to try the Flocks brand stuff! Thanks for sharing and I am in agreement awful!
I actually like the hilo puffs. Flacks and whisps not so much. The fiery puffs are the best. Just like the spicy chips are the best out of all of hilo chips. I heard alot of negative reviews about school yard snacks. Thanks for the review.
i eat the hilo cheese doritos , i love them. It is very diabetic friendly. Doesnt affect my sugar. !!!!!!! I highly recommend.
