The Irish War Pipe was a modern (80-90 Years ago) Invention by bagpipe makers Henry Starck of London - They Patented the keyed chanter found on that. It was brought in and used in pipe bands in the Irish regiments of the british Army. The great Highland bagpipe in its present form came into being in the mid 1700's prior to that they only had two drones. MacIntosh's Lament is the oldest known piece of Ceol Mor frm 14th Century - 2 Drone Highland pipes were fully developed then

It's not intuitive but also ... not that bad. The hard part is internalizing the various "widdly bits" that one uses to articulate the tunes - IE, the fingering.

Your Tyneside union pipemaker was a fellow named Robert Reid.
For the record, though, the vast majority of union uilleann pipers were Irish born or of Irish descent. Many early pipers were members of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, or professional musicians who were patronized by the same aristocracy. Once the aristocrats fecked off to London after the Act of Union though Irish pipers had to fend for themselves, and that's how the instrument got ingrained in Irish trad music.

Beautiful! Especially for one with a German (Jewish) family name. Strange enough that people all over the world ask me why I play the pipes being German. Maybe I just should emigrate to the U.S. to avoid being asked again... Apart from that Continental Europe (including the German Bohemian Goat) has an old piping tradition, too.
