  • This week Plant Lovers a BEAUTIFUL orchid that has burst into bloom with the most stunning flower! The accepted name by Kew is Prosthechea prismatocarpa but I bought it as Panarica prismatocarpa and it's also known as Encyclia prismatocarpa!! One of those orchids that jumps from group to group depending upon which way the nomenclature wind is blowing! The orchid is a native of Costa Rica and Panama but at quite high altitudes which is why it seems to LOVE my Melbourne climate - like many other high altitude orchids from around the world that thrive for me. I grow this outside undercover all year so it deals with my winter night time minimums. As I mention in the video, I bought this at a fundraising evening for the Orchid Species Society of Victoria which you can find out more about here: / ossv.inc
Yet another great reason to find a local orchid group near and join!

So nice to see this video. I just happen to have this orchid in my collection in s.e. Florida USA. It is a great grower that flowers reliably. Thank you for sharing your experiences with growing this one.

I was thinking the same. You could let it climb up a moss pole. Bunnings have them for sale. It might be easier than trying to pot it in a shallow tray set up.?

Matthew your channel is one of my favourites! You give such good information about the wonderful hobby of orchids! I bought this orchid during the summer in 23 and it’s growing well so far. I just grow in the house as I live in a cold climate (Canada). It hasn’t bloomed yet but I’m hoping, it does have a few empty sheaths. When I saw those flowers on line I thought I must have it, they are to die for! So unusual and beautiful! C

I once had the change to buy this orchid but I didn’t, a few days later I thought why didn’t I buy it? So I had a look again and guess what, gone! 😅 never seen it for sale again….

Matthew I have a challenge for you ! If it’s a climber ; why not let it climb!? I dare you to insert some sort of upward guide ; perhaps a cork branch ( I know they are not east to find but I am sure you are resourceful enough !) or a coir tower they use for other climbing plants ! This way you can stick it in a groovy big terracotta pot and secure the vertical element with some stones at the base of the pot that will double as great drainage . I grow a few like this so the date is out there .

Apologies for some typos but I am sure you can interpolate 😂

Thanks for watching! It's not actually a climber - just the way the division has been potted!

Beautiful flower but that growth habit?! It will be interesting to see how you repot it when the time comes. I hope you can make a video of it.

you should be able to lay that flat and have it not grow up, it isn't known as a climber.
