This was what I consider to be the golden age of independent comics. There were lots of small publishers doing interesting things. This book is. Great chance to get the whole series in a consistent format.
I originally watched this video when it first came out, then ordered the book right after the video finished... What an incredible deluxe edition! Tje story is great, and the art is some of the best I've seen. RIP Dave Stevens
For any fan of comics or beautiful art, this is a collection that deserves to be on the shelf of every collector. I met Dave at a couple of SDCC’s and he was so kind and generous with his time, signing and sketching in my old Rocketeer HC. He’s the type of talent that always makes me love comics. Thanks Omar!
Omar: great choice for an overview (I still have my 2009 edition)! If anyone doesn’t have a copy in their library, they need to get one ASAP! By the way: YOU, Omar, need to get a copy of “Drawn to Perfection”, a documentary about Dave Stevens that was released on disc last year (I got mine directly from his sister, on Etsy). 😎
Stevens worked with Russ Manning and did work on Tarzan and the Star Wars newspaper strip. I have a run of British Tarzan comics for which Stevens did some strips which were only printed in Europe.
It's a truly beautiful strip. I still have that issue of Starslayer (bought at the time) where the character first appeared. I instantly loved it, taking its influence from the classic serial "King of the Rocket Men". Just sad we lost Dave so early on.
I bought this edition when it came out and compared it to the comics I still have. This edition is so beautiful. Interesting to see how some background colors were changed. One panel in the original comic had a blue sky while this edition on that particular panel is now yellow. If I didn’t have the original comic I would think it was always yellow. Marvel Masterworks have changed background colors too when compared to the their original comics.
I don't know enough information to form a opinion but my thoughts are with Ed Piskor family right now. Whatever might have happened I wish he wouldn't have taken his own life. RIP. I know from my own experience Mental health is important and serious. If anybody is suffering please speak to someone, a family member or even someone online.
Didn’t care much about him, but the few comics of his which I own are pretty darn interesting. Quite shocking to learn he’s gone forever now. Very unexpected.
Thanks for a brilliant review of a beautiful comic classic. Remember buying Pacific Presents book when it was first published, been in love with Dave Steven’s artwork ever since. Defo one of the best comic artists in the modern era. Very sadly missed.
Always loved the Rocketeer. When I first read it back when it was new, it felt like I experienced lost nostalgia as it was being created. I'm sure this makes no sense but explaining a feeling when I was just a dumb kid isn't easy. Well, its even harder as a dumb old man too. Great stuff and highly recommended.
When is this coming out? My usual sellers don't have it in stock and no release date. I got an earlier release but the binding was screwed up and I would like to get another copy.
Rocketeer is so cool. And the movie is very underrated.

Terrific to see the late Mr. Stevens and his fantastic creation The Rocketeer getting some love and recognition.

Back in print! Wonderful stuff - Dave Stevens was truly one of the greats ❤

I could have sworn you had already done a review on this book. Anyway an excellent book.

I got into The Rocketeer when it first appeared as a back up strip. I always loved anything retro and Dave Stevens artwork is amazing!

I think this is a sign for me to finally get this series

I first saw the movie and later found out about the comic ... Connelly, amazing.
Looks like a staple for any collection!! *adds to wishlist*
Thank you for doing a overview Omar.
Wow! I have to pick this up
Great overview, been wanting to add this story to the collection. Looking forward to picking it up.

Heartbreaking situation. All I do know is that no one deserves to be bullied into suicide by an online mob.
I bought a tpb before 2018 of this story. Guess it’s time for a groovy upgrade!!
Never heard of this before this video. Bought it on the spot!

This looks amazing!
I got this and the big artist edition because I love his art so much.
Dave designed the costume for the 1989 Flash TV series, which was created by the team that wrote the Rocketeer movie - Bilson & Dimeo.

This has peaked my interest. Loved the movie but never read any comics
Pulpy goodness
Team leaflet, there's dozens of us!

What's the name of the documentary Omar recommended?
Just guessing... Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection. It's on Prime
is this out?
This is gotta be like a reprint because it’s been on Amazon for a while, but it was sold out on cheap graphic novels for a while too
