Cinnamon Gardens is an affluent area located in the centre of Colombo. The area got its name from the over 300 acres of cinnamon plantations that existed here in the late 17th century. Cinnamon Gardens is home to important government institutions, the Prime Minister's Office, Independence Hall, Colombo Town Hall and the National Museum, as well as many foreign embassies, high commissions and the homes of the country's dignitaries.
Colombo National Museum or Sri Lanka National Museum is the largest museum in Sri Lanka. Established in 1877, the museum houses the royal collections of Kandyan kings and many other exhibits related to the cultural and natural heritage of the country. Established by Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon, the museum is maintained by the National Museums Department.
The Independence Memorial Hall is a national monument in Sri Lanka built to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from British rule. The memorial was built on the site where Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester opened the first Parliament on 4 February 1948. Originally, this magnificent stone monument was built to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from the British Empire, marking the end of nearly five centuries of colonial rule. The design of the building is based on Magul Madua, the royal court of the King of Kandy, when the Kandyan rulers accidentally handed over sovereignty of the island to the British throne in 1815. The exterior of the assembly hall is decorated with "flowers" that signify wealth and prosperity. The interior of the hall is graced by 60 pillars carved in the famous Mbeke wood of the 14th century Gampola kingdom. At the entrance to the building is a statue of Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister and Father of the Nation, Don Stephen Senanayake, flanked by four stone lions with gaping eyes
The Colombo Lotus Tower is a 1,153 feet tall tower located in Colombo. It is known as an iconic landmark of Sri Lanka. The tower is South Asia's tallest self-supporting structure after India's guy-wire supported INS Kattabomman. It is the 11th tallest tower in Asia and the 19th tallest tower in the world. The lotus-shaped tower is used for communication, observation and other recreational facilities. The building's design is inspired by the lotus flower, which symbolizes purity within Sri Lankan culture.
Galle Face is a 12-acre urban park spread over 500 meters along the coast in the heart of Colombo, the financial and business capital of Sri Lanka. The promenade was originally laid out in 1859 by Governor Sir Henry George Ward, although the original Galley Face Green extended over a much larger area. The Galley Face Green was initially used for horse racing, golf courses, cricket, polo, football and rugby.
