Honestly the only thing I personally would change would be the lives system. Moreso the option to only upgrade to 3 max lives, but in order to get MORE lives they are HIGHLY expensive. Whenever I saw a life in a vending machine be 400m when I was at over 2,000m it felt underwhelming to realize "Oh sure I'll get an extra life if it won't cost me much". So make the lives more expensive, and maybe even more rare to show up in the vending machines.

Rougelikes are kinda like those old games where you can't save, it's really fricking hard, and a game over is a hard reset.
Everyone else: One life? NOOOO!
Me: I beat about 75% of the game with 1 life, and it's my preferred way to play. This is nothing.
I only upgraded my lives fully so that I could get more prlz at the end of my runs and get every badge.
