  • @junado
    @junado 3 года назад +42

    Just an FYI, it's likely cracking because of the end grain to side grain connection. The middle (chevron) pieces are drying out and shrinking across their width, but are constrained by the rails (and the dominos used to secure it). You've essentially made a giant breadboard end without allowing for wood movement.

    • @bailyboop
      @bailyboop 3 года назад +17

      This project will be a tough lesson on wood movement.

    • @w2ttsy670
      @w2ttsy670 3 года назад +5

      That was my thought too. If I remember, the reasons that shaker panels are installed into rabbets is to allow the panels to move independently of the rails and styles.
      This would have worked better if the chevrons had been cut with a spline that allows them to slot into a grove along the styles.

    • @EduardoAndreotti2
      @EduardoAndreotti2 3 года назад +1

      Hey guys, I'm considering building an outdoor gate with the same design. What would be the right construction method to avoid the cracks? Should I use tongue and groove to connect everything? For the inside panels, should I use glue or leave them loose to allow for wood movement. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

    • @T3chnoJunk13
      @T3chnoJunk13 3 года назад

      Well he said he's not afraid to fail... that fail will only be seen later.

    • @junado
      @junado 3 года назад +4

      @@EduardoAndreotti2 There are a few things to consider, the way you join the frame is up to you (dominos, dowels, tongue and grove, etc). The most important thing is that wood expands and contracts across its width, so you need to account for that. The easiest way, for a door in that style, would be to construct it like a frame and panel door and make sure the panel part (the chevrons) sits in deep enough grooves that it can move. It would also help to not glue them all together, so the movement can be spread across a few different panels.
      Veneer or using plywood for the chevrons is another option that would work. Using plywood strip instead of solid wood for the chevrons would let you glue everything solid as per this video.

  • @lukecage5932

    Gotta agree with other folks in the comments, the first stain looked better in my opinion.
    Also, I’d love to see an episode where you addressed what you learned about the cracking in the wood. I get that the doors are up now and you’ll just look at them as “adding character” (I’d do the same thing), but you didn’t intend for them to be there. So, I’d really get a lot from an episode where you discuss what you’d do differently if you could.
    Regardless, huge respect for you and our family for putting all of this out there for us to see. That takes courage and I look forward to your videos and watch them as soon as they come out. Keep up the great work, it’s inspirational for all of us DIY’ers out here.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The doors looked beautiful before your spouse complained, however, you needed to make her happy. Honestly, you do a great job, I wish you were near me you would have lots of work to do which I would gladly pay for. Looking forward to the final reveal of the entire home. Stay Hydrated & Cool this summer... Abrazos

    I loved the doors, but fruit stain was the best color and best color for those doors. But if wifey loves it, then it is a "win!" Beautiful work as always

    Gorgeous doors! Amazing build glad you did the stain that fits your house style. I feel empowered for my 8' doors for my master bedroom. Please send me a link to this sliding hardware for massive doors. Thanks!

    Lesson learned: Triple check with the wifey before pressing on. Oh third stain looks like dried mud. Fruit wood (second stain) was the ticket. Not sure how she likes the third. But I don’t have to look at it daily so there’s that. Awesome build though!!

    Gorgeous Alex. I hate gel stain. I always show the customer a sample piece of wood before staining everything. It's crazy how different woods can take the same stain and look wildly different

    That second stain was beautiful absolutely gorgeous. Your wife tries to make it seem like she’s always right but she’s not. I’ve been watching your video’s. Good luck with the rest of the house man. I appreciate all the manhours you’ve put in to make someone else happy.

    Awesome job man!! Also I’m pretty sure that wood started shrinking because it isn’t fully dried from the stores anymore.. I helped my boss build a deck and we didn’t even put spacing between planks and now they’re all evenly spaced out by about a quarter inch! Nice job though those doors are sweet!

    The differing variation in grain orientation is going to get sketchy from a wood movement perspective. Hi likelihood of warping or cracking as moisture levels change.
