I would have been more impressed if they had a custom dummy PCB made up and built it up with dummy SMT parts. Would probably cost as much as a real gpu though.

That's the proper way to work with a GPU. Those little hits with the screwdriver are helping you to ground yourself, so you can't destroy the card. A hammer would be even better, though.
