I’m turning 40 in December. My dad had all the books. I read them and he also showed me the movie. I love this stuff. He’d beat the dog out of any other superhero to include Batman. We need this to come back. Even as B films I don’t care. I love this
The reason why this didn't get picked up was because its premiere broadcast was interrupted by Reagan's farewell speech on 8/15/1988 and only the last 15 minutes were shown on TV, and that was the only broadcast until 2009
Honestly never knew that this was based on a printed book series! Viewed the film Remo Williams The Adventure Begins and truly thought it was a screen play piece! Will now begin to find the book series!
I read the books to about 80 somewhere around book 30 the quality just dumped and were bad at 50 -60 -I would guess at a ghostwriter and Shirpo wasnt the real authour or the publishing company was behind all or Shipro were old and senile
I just cannot get over learning that Chun was played by 2 American Actors, with Joel Gray having the main role in the cult classic movie, and just does the character way better bc he created it
Like it! Watched Remo Williams: the Adventure Begins at a theater back in late 1980s -- Cinema Lounge in Moorhead, MN. The only bar/movie theater I've ever heard of. Didn't know that a tv series sprang up from it though. Fun.
It would be hard to replicate the paperback Remo Williams' actual combat style. In the paperback series, Remo Williams moves and strikes with the inhuman speed of the fictional vampire. His fights are always lethal where he ends up killing his adversary with bone-crushing, throat smashing blows. There was only one time where Remo Williams was concerned about losing. In one paperback book, he faces off against a big black man trained in Chinese Preying Mantis style. Remo reflects that Preying Mantis Style was intended primarily for smaller men to compensate. It's now being employed by a big, powerful man. Remo reflects further that if the black man can get past Remo's defenses, then Remo would be dead with one blow. So while the black man's onlooking friends tease him about looking faggy with his bent, preying mantis hands, Remo knows this man is a deadly adversary. Fortunately, the black man doesn't slip through Remo's defense and he kills his preying mantis foe with a crushing head blow.
Of ALL the Remakes, Sequals, Movies FROM Shows Hollywood has been MAKING lately -"I" thought THIS would have Been an EXCELLENT Series, &/or MOVIE to CONTINUE!!
Due to President Ronald Reagan's speech on the night of 15th August 1988, ABC made the decision to join "Remo Williams" in progress, rather than start it from the beginning, which would have delayed the network's 9 pm broadcasting. As a result, only the last 15 minutes of the 60-minute program were seen.
How did I not know about this until now?!?!? It's even better than the original. 80s-tastic, but I was totally fine with it by 10 minutes in. This guy moves quite well for the role too, considering it's 80s TV, it's amazing.
I definitely wouldn’t say that. Fred Ward IS Remo Williams. This character doesn’t have the same humility he’s a little too suave in his speech patterns.
En cherchant le film, Remo, sans arme et dangereux, j'ai découvert cet unique pilote de la série faisant à priori suite au film. Merci pour la mise à dispo et les infos.
"OK, Joel Grey in the movie didn't really scream 'Asian martial arts master' to the public at large. Who can we get that is a totally believable martial arts master and is even MORE authentically Asian than Joel Grey?" "uh...I dunno, Roddy MacDowell?" "GIVE THAT MAN A PROMOTION!!!"
Hey James, I've watched your channel a few times . Interesting to see you here. Roddy McDowell does a good Chuin, not Joel Grey, but pretty close. This guy is not Fred Ward though by a long shot.
this wasn't too bad considering how extremely low budget it was for the year that it came out. I agree that it should have been called Chuin: Master of Sinanju
This is the Remo Williams TV pilot episode for a proposed weekly TV Series which was set as a TV sequel to the movie Remo Williams: The adventure begins and was aired on ABC in summer 1988. unfortunately, ABC rejected the pilot and did'nt picked up for the show.
Thanks for replying. too bad for Remo and Chuin since the movie did'nt done great at the Box-office back in 1985 following the wake of Back to the Future.
I have been told that there are 3 1/2 other hour long shows that were filmed, but never made it out of the studio. Was told they just walked out into the filming one day, and said "Stop. We're done."
ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!!!!!!! This was a great pilot (for 1988)! Why it wasn't picked up is a mystery to me. This captured the essence of the “Destroyer” books and the Chiun/Remo relationship. I'll be watching this again. It was actually better then the movie. If there's any flaw here it's that Remo was too young and hip. But he did maintain the Remo attitude (though I wish he would have said “that's biz” some where in there). Sure, looking back some 26 years it seems hokey, but at the time it was was a unique and very well done concept. Here's hoping some one with real insight to the characters and story give it another try.
It was shown in November 88 but was Interrupted by a Speech by then President Reagen and only the last 15 minutes we shown, it was never repeated, Wonder Why It Never Sold? Star Jeffary Meek Would Later star in the short lived Martial Arts Series Raven!
Um, considering the formidable limitations of '80s TV, I suppose this wasn't as bad as it could have been, but in no way shape or form does it even come close to the feel of the novels.
This pilot would make a great companion to a "special edition" DVD of the 1985 film. It has much of the same tone and borrows the excellent music from the film, though Jeff Meek pales in comparison to the legendary Fred Ward. Though Roddy McDowell is near perfect and at par with Joel Grey. Too bad we only got to see a pilot. The opening credits show scenes not seen in this episode, so perhaps there were more produced.
If this was made in 1985, the book "The Arms Of Kali", #59, published that year, might have been a better choice to go with. Because this HARD to watch. As a fan, I can't recommend this except as a novelty.
I went to see the original movie and read several of the books. I hope these characters get a big budget remake soon. I don't think much of the fellow playing Remo in this version but Roddy McDowels take on Chiun is pretty spot on. Almost as good as Joel Grey.
Hello Scott. You are of course right about Chiun. The original film did get his entire look wrong. The movie also altered the circumstances over which Chiun and Remo met. If a remake were ever made I would hope that some of those original mistakes could be corrected as I'm a firm believer in sticking as close to the source material as possible, especially as the books were a pretty good read. This episode definitely reflected the "toughen Remo by getting people to try and kill him" approach of conditioning that Chiun loved in the early novels.

I can't understand why the people who made both the movie and this pilot didn't bother to read at least a few of the novels. Now, in some of the later books, their capabilities go beyond ridiculous, but here, Chiun can bring Remo back from the DEAD??!

Television is the wrong medium for these stories. Warren Murphy, the man who brought us the screenplay for Lethal Weapon II (the best of all of them in my opinion), meant for much of these to be satirical. Given that this is using 1988 technology for effects, we can lower the bar a bit. The latest word is that "The Destroyer" will be done in the not too distant future by Shane Black - www.darkhorizons.com/news/33528/shane-black-to-direct-the-destroyer Hopefully, someone will be able to do these stories justice.
Roddy McDowell was good as Master Chun in the 1988 Remo Wms TV Pilot ! Yes, The New Actor os Remo Williams was a poor choice ! Since Fred Ward is too old, or deceased, whom else would be a good choice ?
Lord Eden Do you need Jimmy Brown to explain it to you a third time Lord Eden? Or should I say Lord Numb Nuts. You remind me of an old saying... "You can remain silent and have everyone think you the fool, or you can open your mouth and remove all doubt."

While I enjoyed this, I feel Fred Ward was tremendous in the movie, Roddy nailed Chuin from the movie. I would have liked this to continue 👍👍👍

My favorite line from the books "Even Maude's daughter"

@@timothymcdonald6913 Yup, the book series is called "The Destroyer." Fun adventure reads. You can find them at used book stores pretty easily.

This pilot capture the relationship between Chiun and Remo from the books excellently, better than the film.
Too bad there is only a pilot.
😱 The grip in his hands and fingers when he crushed that tennis ball
I see they kept the music from the movie. What I didn't know was that the statue of liberty was a replica

Yeah, I wasn't sure they could manage to trade down, but....
Joel Grey played Chiun perfectly personality wise, I just wish they'd gotten a better fight choreographer.
Interestingly,at the beginning of the pilot,Remo appears to have the same kind of clothes as Marty McFly from BTTF...I wonder... :T
Thanks for posting that. I've never seen the pilot and it was a lot of fun. :-)
Back in the day, Bruce Campbell would have been ideal for Remo.

I see Remo is sporting the late 80's Riggs Mullet.
I thought Jeffrey Meek was excellent in the short lived TV series "Raven" and one of the awesome show of the 90's

The latest word is that "The Destroyer" will be done in the not too distant future by Shane Black - www.darkhorizons.com/news/33528/shane-black-to-direct-the-destroyer
Hopefully, someone will be able to do these stories justice.
good shit
Roddy McDowell was good as Master Chun in the 1988 Remo Wms TV Pilot ! Yes, The New Actor os Remo Williams was a poor choice ! Since Fred Ward is too old, or deceased, whom else would be a good choice ?
Mac, tu avresti costruito le piramidi se ti trovassi .........
i think Roddy McDowall pulled off a great Chuin
Ha, the round eye playing Chiun is hilarious.
That has to be one of the worst attempts to portray an Asian as I have ever seen.
Funny as they were comic books!
Lord Eden
Do you need Jimmy Brown to explain it to you a third time Lord Eden? Or should I say Lord Numb Nuts. You remind me of an old saying... "You can remain silent and have everyone think you the fool, or you can open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Uhhummm Doctor Strange
Not exactly my point Slim but if you think that is a 'good looking anglo man' then go for it.
No Fred Ward, no me watching this.
This show should have been allowed at least one season. Oh good old Chiun.
