- After spending a week in Jakarta Indonesia, I decided to try Jakarta's Public Transportation as a Foreigner to see how it was. Jakarta has 3 types of public transportations, TransJakarta, MRT and KRL. But how convenient is Jakarta's public transportation compared to the taxis? Today I wen't on a journey and tried the TransJakarta buses and MRT Jakarta, it surprised me!

The Conclusion: Don't Judge Jakarta because the negative side :Flood,Traffic Jam, Polution, Take the positive side: they have a good public transportation, they have a lot of museum, so many beautiful place in jakarta you can visit, greatings from Bandung West Java😁
Exactly!! I can't tell you how many people told me "Don't go to Jakarta"

Safe and comfortable mobility is important. Public transport plays a big part of that to reduce private, individual car use which causes traffic, higher risk of road crash and pollution.
Thank you for highliting what Jakarta got in terms of PT, which is not bad at all ! It has certainly improved since I was last there.

Hi Alex, I'm an Indonesian who lives in Italy for the last 7 years and I haven't gone back to Jakarta for almost 2 years now because of the pandemic. I watch some videos of yours to feel better about my homesick feeling, and through this video, I even learnt how to take the MRT since it was made recently (yes, I'm preparing myself how to re-adapt to spend time in my hometown, LOL). Anyhow, thank you for the great videos, keep it up and enjoy Indonesia!

I am an Indian and I lived in Jakarta for close to an year and I love the city. Although you have MRT, Transjakarta, I had found using Gojek and Grab way more easier to move around in the city. for all public transportation in jakarta, you can use apps named 'Trafi'. it is very detail more thaan google maps
oh okay that is something i missed!
@@alexandwhite that app is really useful that it can even track buses
@@alexandwhite but i dont think they work together with transjakarta anymore... so if u want real time info on bus departures for both transjakarta and metrotrans (non BRT buses) u shud use Tije app instead! Have fun in Jakarta!
transjakarta tracking doesn't work on trafi anymore, it's now on moovit
More on the prepaid car: You can use the same card for more than 1 passenger on Transjakarta buses, since the payment is done in the beginning when you enter the station (Flat rate: IDR 3,500/USD 0.24 per entrance, regardless of distance/transfers). On the other hand, each passenger on KRL (Commuter Train) & MRT need their personal card since the payment for both is done during exit from the station, as the fee depends on the distance. The current max fee for MRT from one end to another is IDR 14,000/USD 0.97 (15.7 km distance). Train is considerably cheaper (but far more crowded) where a trip from Jakarta Kota to Bogor station (54.8 km distance) will cost IDR 6,000/USD 0.42. Keep great vids like this coming!
You must be drenched in sweat walking that much in Jakarta's heat 😅 And yes, KRL do need its own episode. Try to get in on rush hour 😁
you have no idea 😆😆 I cut out a talking part in the video that said i'm glad i'm not wearing a white shirt right now 😂
The MRT is so cool,
Recent news is the government of Indonesia will apply the MRT system to some other cities as well,
Wow wish they have it in bali by near future,
Anyway need lots of improvement of public information in English as a tourist friendly country 👍
That would be amazing if they brought it to Bali too wow
Well MRT in Jakarta already in English. The others, yes maybe in the future with many tourists/foreigners come in here, they could improve that.
That's true, indonesia goverment will build MRT/LRT in 5 cities. They are bandung, surabaya (Java island)
Medan ( sumatra)
Makassar ( Sulawesi)
And taddaaaaa... (Bali)🤩🤩🤩
Hope this plan soon be come true

Hey alex, i recommend going to pik golf island, it's a newly developed area by pik (pantai indah kapuk). You can bike (or jog) there in the morning or evening as it's popular for bikers, theres a lot of shop to rent bikes from, they give reasonable prices. People usually bike around the pier or just go wonder around the island. YoU can also take cool drone shots as its by the ocean. There's also a little china town but this one is organized unlike the one near kota tua. If u decide to go back at the evening maybe take a walk through pik as it is very lively at night(around 6pm and above), a lot of restaurants and bars for dinner. For transportation, you can take transjakarta from the s. Parman podomoro city station (assuming you live by central place and taman anggrek) taking route 9 towards pluit and transit at penjaringan stop and take 1a route going for gold coast pik towards pik,(btw theres a huge bridge there, you can take drone shots there) from there you can ride a gojek or grab bike to the island (or just walk across the huge bridge), its like a 5 to 10 minutes ride. I use traffi app to find my transjakarta route, but it might be easier for you to use google maps.
Thanks Lu!! yeah going to do a video at PIK this weekend probably
Hope you'll have lots of funnnnn!😁
PIK car culture is as bad as America. They hate pedestrians so much they created a whole island just to spit on them. Anywhere in PIK isn't within walking distance. Stay away from that rich ghetto

Just for refference, jakarta is good place to work because the fee standard quite high compares to other cities, the work culture, traffic jam etc sometimes quite frustrating. But it paid off with the salaries. But if you considering less busy city with a lot of things to see as a tourist, try yogyakarta , malang and bandung in java island. You won't regret it.
So far the traffic hasn’t been that bad, been loving the city life
@@alexandwhite because its pandemic, would be disaster when its normal again

Here's how I use public transportation (personally) as an Indonesian in Jakarta
1) I use the mandiri e-money card - everyone needs to have atleast one of these tapcash/e-money card to ride the public transportation.
2) To go between cities I use the Commuter Train (KRL); this is often used by workers and university students because it goes around cities and it's an efficient way of transportation for workers in Bogor, Depok, etc because they mostly work in Jakarta. So avoid rush hour (06-09 AM) (05-08PM).
3) I always use the TJ (Transjakarta) to go to tourist/visitor attraction - it's conveniently placed lol. Note that my dad used to ride TJ to go to work so there's a chance of rush hour too.
4) If I wanna hang around in cafes or places that attract fellow youngsters like me I would use the MRT; current MRT line is from Lebak Bulus to Central Jakarta and areas around the stop station (like Blok M, or Bundaran HI) provides places to hang out such as cafes, etc etc. In MRT there's barely rush hour, not a lot use this method of transportation to go to work yet.
5) Always check Google Maps, or other kind of application to see where you are coming from and where you are going - it'll help you a lot.
6) For foreigner, other method of transportation like Bajaj, Angkot, has more complicated setting because of the language barrier - but Gojek is one of my favorite motorcycle app if I want to go somewhere that's not too far and not too close.
You can use the card for more than one person on Trans Jakarta Bus lines because the bus fee is fixed - only Rp3.500 - and deducted immediately when you tab the card on the machine. You won't be charged when you tab the card when leaving the bus station. The reason you still have to tab the card is just for statistical analysis for improving the service, such as where you board the bus and get off the bus. On MRT line the card fee will be deducted when you leave the station at the end of your journey. And the fee is variable depends on where you exit. So, it cannot be used for more than one person at the same time.
Awesome thanks for explaining this Adolf 🙌🏼
Alexander, you're welcome.
I believe you are supposed to have one card per person for MRT and KRL because they charge you based on the distance. But for TransJakarta, it’s a flat-rate and charged once you tap inside the station so people technically can share by double tapping. Also, Bogor is a really nice place to explore and many good food! Might be tricky to get around but if you have gojek, you’ll be fine.
Yes it seems that many other subscribers are saying the same thing about having one card for MRT and KRL! Thanks Blablabla 😁🙌🏻

Hi Alex, great video :) GBK area is actually in south central Jakarta, but it actually really more in central Jakarta. It is the main sport complex & probably the biggest in Jakarta and in Indonesia. Taman Anggrek area is in west central Jakarta, so it actually still pretty central. And if you go directly from Taman Anggrek to GBK area is actually not that far if you go straight, even by Transjakarta bus it probably only takes 20 minutes with 4 stops exiting in Senayan. GBK is in senayan area. So Taman Anggrek is really still quite central eventhough technically in west Jakarta. Can’t wait for more of your Jakarta video...
Ah okay thanks for explaining this! Yeah I really liked the GBK area I have to go back and explore more of it

Indonesian infrastructure has been improving over the past few years, although most still transport by car and motorbikes and use online cabs to go around places, it is great to see that Indonesia is improving greatly. BTW you were lucky that Bajaj driver offered you at 30k, usually tourists get charged 70k and above
Welcome to Jakarta your loops start from Central Park, Glodok, Kota Tua (old town), Monas, HI MRT, Istora/Senayan, and GBK👍🏤
Yes this was the exact route!
For transjakarta, you can use 1 card for more than 1 person, because the machine charge your card when the first time you tap (just starting the journey).
But for MRT and commuter line (KRL) you can't do that, because the tap machine will calculate your total journey to charge your card on the last stop (when you go out from the station).
I lived here in Bogor, maybe some advice from me as a Bogorian hehe... Before using a commuter line train please make sure you not in a Rush Hour Schedule, because it was so dam* crowded and must wait for a long queue when tap in or out a prepaid card.
When you arrived at Bogor, please try our city Mainstream Tourism Site such as: Kebun Raya Bogor (City Forest of Bogor) right on the center of the City, Bogor Presidential Palace or Bogor Palace, Kujang Monument, Puncak Hill that there are a lot of attraction there like tea plantation, zoo Safari Bogor, Telaga Warna, Taman Bunga Indonesia (Flower Garden Indonesia), White Villa, Cipamingkis Waterfall, Cicurug Waterfall, Parahyangan Agung Jagatkartta Temple, and many more.
It was really excited that knowing you will going to visit Bogor, hahaha. I will wait for other video in Bogor, happy exploring and stay safe Mr.
hahah yes many people have said not to go during rush hour, going to try and avoid it 😆 thanks Ardianto! 🙌🏻
@@alexandwhite yes, I live in the satellite city of Jakarta, and everytime i went to Jakarta, I'll always take a train atleast at 9am, if you take a train before that time, then you will be..... you know the answer 🤣

But if we visit Bogor in the weekend, it'll be rush hour in the morning cause every Jakarta citizen like to visit Bogor.

Thanks for highlighting especially the two major transportation in Jakarta. It's also a great feedback from you towards the government on the difficulties for foreigners in understanding instruction on getting credits for the prepaid card on the ticket machine. Having at least an easy and handy English instruction is the norm of these days (should've been understood even at the first time they set up the system). What I can say also as someone who have used metros in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Berlin, New York, Washington DC, and Paris... we're still way behind in terms of how many lines we have. But we're getting there. I wished that the metro development had started since the end of 1990s but the Asian Financial crisis hit us hard so then the previous municipal government didn't have much budget to construct them until they can in the late 2010s. I think what's also lacking at the moment is an easy interconnection between these four major transportation (Transjakarta, MRT, Commuter Line, and LRT) but they're currently constructing such project (one of them will be located in Manggarai). Hopefully they will build more of the same project. Commuter Line nowadays are much more convenient than those times around 10 years ago. I still remember how crazy the ride was, when people can still climb to the top of the train, the dangers of pickpocketter looms large, and once I was facing someone with a big chunk of durian in front of my eyes (LOL almost hit my head too). However, the problem with the tardiness of time schedule of Commuter Line still persists to these very days. LRT is getting closer to its opening, I believe it will be launched by the end of this year. When these combined have connected to each other, I believe that the quality of life in this city will be very much improved.
As a Jakarta resident, I recognise these public transportation. I know that it's difficult if you don't speak Indonesian. But it's pretty cheap for most foreigners. Jakarta is an amazing place! I know that it has many problems but it's still a valuable and extraordinary part of the beautiful country of Indonesia ❤️🇮🇩❤️
I wish I'm in Jakarta , so I could teach you how to deal with Bajaj....LOL, Great video bro...Cheers from Canada🇨🇦, I will make lots of Video as well , if I am in Jakarta.
Hahah that would be awesome! 😆🙌🏼
Never been to Jakarta before, but my god this feels surreal to see Indonesia have a local easy public transportation system like this. It really feels like I'm watching a Japan vlog. The clean and fancy place, the really cheap train costs, the vending machines although it's not as much as in Japan. Goverment really should do more advertisement to this in the future so that more people use it. It's convenient, cheap, and gives less pollution compared to other transportation.
Hi Alexander.. welcome to Jakarta!
Hope you enjoy your time in Jakarta. Maybe if you want to download an app for public transport, you can download ‘Trafi’ app in Google Store/App Store. it’s include all of transportation type in Jakarta (TransJakarta, MRT, Buses, Angkot, Commuter Line) and for TransJakarta, if the system not error, it can give you real-time estimate buses position so you can estimate how long the journey from A to B.
And if you stayed near Taman Anggrek, I think you can try to go to PIK (Pantai Indah Kapuk), there’s mangrove forest there, and still in PIK, there is an area for all restaurant & cafe area and also waterpark name Waterboom, also a big shopping mall call PIK Avenue. and also a big religious community called Tzu Chi also there, all there on one area so you can spend a day there.
Thanks Maxxie! I think I will do my next video on PIK
@@alexandwhite sure Alex! I hope you enjoy your time stay in Jakarta. Honestly, many places to visit here, but maybe because of the situation now, some of them maybe close.
Anyway if you stay near Taman Anggrek and Central Park, there is an indoor aquarium in Neo Soho Central Park (there’s skybridge from CP mall to Neo Soho) called Jakarta Aquarium (largest indoor aquarium in Indonesia) beside Seaworld in Ancol. And the newest one, called Senayan Park, there’s a mall and open area to walk and relax with nice view
Jakarta Indonesia is the power of Asia❤️😘
Beautiful city!! 😁🙌🏼
this is very cool, even though you have a little trouble there, but still calm, I really like this
Thank you Ibri! appreciate you watching 🙌🏻
you know I am laughing when you try to negotiation the bajaj price as what you did with anastasia. Good Jobbbbb
hahaha I wanted to see if i could get the local price!! 😆
@@alexandwhite hahahah there you go
you need to visit DUNIA FANTASY, its like disneyland but more indonesian version, so much fun there if its open
you think they'll let me film there? haha
@@alexandwhite you can find out!!
For your question about 'Is the prepaid card can be used for more than 1 person" answer is: Yes, but only for Transjakarta bus, because they apply single fare for each trip (IDR 3,5k). So if in case your friend's card is missing, you still can re-tap for them, both while getting in (they charge you only at the entrance) and out (to open the exit gate). But it doesn't work for MRT and KRL where you pay based on the number of stations bracket.
I'm just waiting for tourists to be allowed in again! My Javanese girlfriend and I want to get married as soon as possible and hopefully I'll be able to stay!
As you start this new journey in life, may every day hold wonderful shared experiences! Wish you a very joyous and blissful married life.
@@fais432 Thank you very much! It's weird because I was just thinking about my girlfriend, and thinking about when we're going to be together again? I'm very excited about living in Indonesia and knowing that there's many nice people who will make me feel comfortable. Have a great day!

Thank you for visiting Jakarta, so happy to see your video walking around and trying the public transportation. Hope you will visit Jakarta again in the future :)
thank you Willy!
hi bro, because you're in jakarta. It is better if you get to know more about the history of Jakarta. You can visit a museum in Jakarta. because the city of Jakarta is very historical starting from the era of the kingdom, Dutch colonialism, Japanese colonialism to Indonesian independence. because Jakarta is the capital / important city in every generation. starting from the Tarumanagara kingdom, the Sundanese kingdom, the Banten Sultanate, the Dutch East Indies, the Japanese-occupied Dutch East Indies to the Republic of Indonesia. there are several museums in Jakarta including:
1. The May 12 Tragedy Museum
The May 12 Tragedy Museum is a museum designed as a forum for documenting the active role of Trisakti students in fighting for democracy and human rights. This museum tells a brief story about four students who were shot on May 12, 1998. Inside the museum there are short articles, news collections from newspapers, ornaments, demonstration photos, photos of the deceased and their relics.
2. Satria Mandala Museum, South Jakarta
Historically, this museum was the residence of Ratna Sari Dewi, wife of the first president of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno. This house even became President Soekarno's last resting place before he was buried in the city of Blitar. When President Soeharto came to power, in 1971 this house officially became the Satria Mandala Museum and was converted into the historical center of the TNI.
3. Maritime Museum, North Jakarta
This historic place in Jakarta used to be a former warehouse complex for storing spices such as nutmeg, tobacco, copra, pepper and various other spices. Many collections can be seen in the Maritime museum. One of them is Dutch ship models complete with cannons.
4. National Awakening Museum, Central Jakarta
Before becoming a National Awakening museum, this building was a medical school in the Dutch colonial era called STOVIA or School tot Opleding van Inlandsche Arsten. This place was inaugurated in 1902. In this very historic place, there are several dioramas as museum collections such as STOVIA teachers, STOVIA students and even dioramas about Kartini.
5. Elephant Museum, Central Jakarta
The National Museum of Indonesia or better known as the Elephant Museum was founded by the Dutch colonial government in 1978. The collections in this museum number more than 140,000 which are divided into several sections, namely collections of pre-history, archeology, ceramics, ethnography , and geography.
6. Proclamation Monument, Central Jakarta
This monument was first built on January 1, 1961 and inaugurated by President Soeharto on August 17, 1972. In this place you can remember the history of the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
Ha..ha...udah ngetik panjang2 gak dibales....mampus....😅
Hello i'm from indonesia, enjoy in jakarta
hello laela!
I hope you enjoy your vacation in Jakarta, success is always for you
Him > "to get to Indomaret"
Also him > go to Alfamart
well yeah they are the same tho
Aqua = every mineral water in Indonesia
You can only share the card with transjakarta bus, because it will deduct your balance when you tap in,while MRT or KRL have a policy one card for one person and it deduct your balance once you tab out at your destination station.
the MRT construction phase two is already started, begins from bundaran HI station ,going north passes the old town and ended in west ancol. I think if you come here 5 years later, you might ride it on, LOL.. GBK was the main venue for 2018 ASEAN games... Too bad, monas is already closed for one year becoz of pandemic, actually you could buy ticket climbing up to the top. And umm.. MRT jakarta is celebrating its second year this month! The TAP cash card could be used for many people in transjakarta , coz it reduces card balance directly at the departure gate and flat cost for all trip. For commuter and MRT it reduces by the end of your trip, coz its fare is counted based on how long your trip is.
Correction : ASIAN games Not ASEAN games..
you know its funny they still have the banners outside for the Asian games 😆😆
@@alexandwhite yes it did also happen in jakabaring sport area in palembang, the second venue of ASIAN GAMES.. Well, to be honest, that was the biggest sport venue we ever hosted. You could search in youtube : opening ceremony of 2018 ASIAN games😀😀
Jakarta Metro have 2 subway/train basic metro is MRT Jakarta, commuter line train, and LRT jakarta.
yeah someone told me about the LRT i didnt know about it but will have to try that out before I leave!
@@alexandwhite There's 2 LRT system in Jakarta. LRT Jakarta & LRT Jabodebek. LRT Jakarta already running from Kelapa Gading - Rawamangun. LRT Jabodebek consist of 3 lines haven't finished yet, but the whole line going to be open for public this November '21
Hi alex, you can use your card for many people in transjakarta.
But you can't do this in KRL and MRT. So if your friend had no card but want to use transjakarta, you can borrow your card to your friend after you tap on the machine.
Awesome thanks for letting me know Cahyo!
Heyy Dude...
I hope you enjoy in Indonesia, and make a beautiful story when you are no longer in Indonesia. enjoy every moment and send my message for memories.
Can't wait for the next video 👍👍
Of course!! Thanks for watching Arif! 🙌🏻😁
You deserve more views tbh.
I'm very happy with these views don't get me wrong 😆
Go to Bogor early in the morning, and make sure you return before 3pm, packed commuter KRL is no fun. The train ride is around 90 minutes from Duri Station (a short motorcycle ride from where you're staying). Make sure to get on the train that says Bogor (the other 2 will be depok and Nambo and these 3 shares the same track). Coming back from Bogor, make sure you get on the Angke/Jatinegara train because there's another line that runs to Jakarta Kota
I can tell by your videos that you did an in depth research, the info are very helpful, great video man!
0:15 There are 6 districts actually. The other one you missed is probably Kepulauan Seribu (lit. Thousand Islands). It's a bunch of islands located in the north of Jakarta.
ah yes, many have said that too. I didn't know thousand islands would be another district thanks Panji!
@@alexandwhite No worries! Even some people here still think that Thousand Islands are part of North Jakarta lol.
16:17 you can use 1 prepaid together with another person only in transjakarta bus if I am not mistaken. Their system is kinda old
aaah okay thanks for explaining this Titus it seems most other subscribers are commenting the same thing! 🙌🏻
U can use integrated card called Jaklingko, it's cheaper, reached to microbus as well and can top up by phone using BNI bank account called tap cash go.
this video will very useful for foreign people who want to visit jakarta, thanks to upload this one
One suggestion, choose e-money or indomaret card from Mandiri. They have cooperation with Indomaret and easier to top-up since Indomaret are everywhere and you can simply top-up by using only cash. Other cards most likely (but not all) need ATM card from their respective bank, that is why they said they can't top it up.
And no, this post is not endorsed by anyone. Just sharing info for fellow public transport user.
too late now have the tap cash card haha
good job Indonesia from Thailand 🇲🇨🇹🇭
🇲🇨 Monaco
🇮🇩 Indonesia
The best card to get is E-Money card by Mandiri Bank. It can be used on MRT, commuter trains & Transjakarta buses. You can usually topup the card in Indomaret/Alfamart using cash. If an Indomaret/Alfamart can't topup the card just walk around & find another Indomaret/Alfamart (we got LOTS of them, sometimes there can be multiple stores in 1 kilometer square area)
subscribed! feel excited to watch your next video! Hope you go to Bogor while you try KRL. Stay safe and healthy alex
Thank you Citra!! I will do a video on Bogor maybe next week 😁🙌🏻
Bahasa means Language 🙏 Love from the Philippines ❤️
haah yes another subscriber just told me. Thanks lan!
@@alexandwhite It's derivatived from Sanskrit word "Bhasa" means language...Thailand use Phasa
This video is unbiased which i like. No city is perfect, even New York MTA has its golden days and now it's in crisis.
Jakarta has been disorganized for decades and the "clean up" has just started in the past 10 years or so.
But so far so good in my opinion with many more milestone to reach.
PS: Try to haggle more if you are using Bajaj, they often jacked up the rate when a foreigners is in sight.
And don't forget to ask for help. Indonesians be it ordinary people, street vendors or traffic police love to help even if they cannot understand English.
Me, an Indonesian who never touched any kind of public transport because motorcycle exists : 👁👄👁
haha very true i do love my motorcycles too
Many people use motorcycles because it is just easier way and faster... ofc if people has it...
I will ensure that I will be watching this at 10PM sharp...
Hahah thank you Berpikir 😆👍🏻
South Jakarta is probably the best area to stay in. Followed by West, Central, North, then East.
Yeah you should have stayed in South Jakarta (or Central but only in Thamrin-Menteng area) because that's the boujee area of Jakarta. Cleaner and more comfortable.
yeah maybe i'll try next time, but i still enjoyed the area i lived in
