Bee, Bee, Bumblebee (Counting Out)

  • Every kid should have a good collection of counting out rhymes. When I was a child, we would all rush outside at recess and everyone would put one foot in the middle to choose "It" for whatever game we were playing. The counter usually started with something short to get down to fewer people ("Cub Scout, you're out"), and then switched to something longer to draw out the drama as we got closer to that last final person.
I'm often the first person to show my students a counting out rhyme, and the game of putting your foot in the middle is often sufficient, but I like to have the last person standing get the first turn at the next activity or the first choice of instruments, in the hopes that they'll transfer it to the playground some day.
And, of course, I have a secret music teacher agenda with these kinds of rhymes. Because as they all stand there saying the chant, and staring as my finger goes from foot to foot, they're also intently absorbing steady beat keeping and the concept of one-for-one correspondance: one foot gets one beat (which helps later when they have to count things).
But, don't tell them, okay? It will just be our secret.
    Text:
    Bee, bee, bumblebee
Stung a man upon his knee
Stung a pig upon his snout
I declare that you are out!
