    Don't forget that BOA looks out for their buddies too. Take a look at all of the winners from the grand nationals last week in both the semi-finals and finals and then compare that list to the list of directors that are on their advisory board. Hint, it's a lot. 9 of the 12 bands that placed in the semi-finals have directors on the BOA advisory board. Can't understand how no one's called them out on that.

    • @MusketeerCaptain
      @MusketeerCaptain 2 года назад +13

      Correlation doesn't equal causation, that's why no one is "calling them out." The directors of those marching bands happen to have very strong programs. Additionally, non-partisan adjudicators are the ones scoring the bands, not the executive board.
      You could also make the argument that if bands like Tarpon Springs and Hebron came to Nats, some of those bands whose directors are on the advisory board would not have made finals.

    • @keithkozma
      @keithkozma 2 года назад +4

      If you don't see how being an advisor to the organization that judges the very thing you complete in is a conflict of interest and unfair advantage, I'm not sure what else to say.

    • @MusketeerCaptain
      @MusketeerCaptain 2 года назад +2

      @@keithkozma Again, it's not the board that is judging the shows. Each adjudicator works as an independent contractor, and they have judged hundreds or thousands of shows for all different kinds of circuits. I promise you that they are not thinking about being nicer to the band performing because their director is on the board to the organization that is paying them to judge.

    • @keithkozma
      @keithkozma 2 года назад +5

      @@MusketeerCaptain Maybe I'm a bit jaded, but in my experience with life that's exactly what happens and I'm not only talking about marching bands. Favoritism is everywhere.

    • @MusketeerCaptain
      @MusketeerCaptain 2 года назад +8

      @@keithkozma I can understand your perspective. I know a lot of the adjudicators for BOA and other circuits, so I'm coming from a place of knowing their integrity.
      My favorite story one of them told me was the following:
      "I was judging for a different circuit, not to be named, and it was the only time this issue has ever come up in my (x) years of judging. The contest host didn't like the score I had given their group, so they asked me, "is there anything we can do about that score that you gave?" I told them, "sure, I can lower it if you want" and they knew at that point the conversation was done."
      So, in short, these guys take their job seriously and really love being as honest as they can in their comments/scoring of each group, in *my* experience.

    I agree; probably a 55/45 or 60/40 for music/visual makes more sense to me and then the music score is the tie breaker.
    But yeah, why I like the Barbershop Harmony Society that has a double or triple panel (depending on contest size district vs. international) so 2 or 3 judges per the 3 categories of Singing, Music, and Performance. And those judges all go to a 3yr. candidate school that helps them find what they're categories mean and what they look for.
    Both of these things help to eliminate the outliers in scores. (still always subjective; no way around it even if not malicious)

    Go and look at scoring in DCI from 1983 and earlier...the tick system.
    Highlights:
    Shows were longer -- 11:30 to 13 min (the current 10 - 11:30 started in 1986)
    No one was allowed to vocalize on the field without penalty, except for the DM(s) and color guard captain
    On the first note or first step there was a single gunshot, indicating that timing had started (the first running start was, I think, Cadets in 89).
    At the 11:30 mark, there were 2 gunshot, after which ALL judging ceased except for GE...if you watch a high cam vid from before 84, you see the field judges leaving the field with their clipboards held up high to show they were no longer marking mistakes. You could therefore drop gear, blow a drill set, or completely chow a solo or ensemble section (*cough 82 SCV cough*) and it would not affect the score....which is why corps often held off on their hardest and most error-prone parts until after the 11:30 gun.
    If you went beyond 13 minutes, there was another single shot, indicating overtime penalties were now in play.
    The scoring itself: Everyone STARTED with a score of 100...mistakes, called tics (because they were noted by a tic on the score sheet) were generally 1/10th of a point for moist infractions -- a blown attack, phasing/out of step in the feet, hitting a rim, etc, although there could be larger penalties -- dropping a rifle or stick was 1/10th, but picking it up again was a full POINT. This is partially why corps would repeat one or more charts from the prior year(s)....it was already familiar, which meant (ideally) it would be played cleaner. There were 5 charts in 82 BD...the opener, perc feature, and concert were repeated in 83 (and were in the same place in the show1st, 3rd, and 4th), with only the production (2nd) and closer (5th) being new to the program.
    It was a very punitive system.

  • @OliviaSNava
    @OliviaSNava 11 месяцев назад +1

    For DCA the 250 number: you halve composition and add communication and performance. So for the first one P. Hinman's score for the Buccaneers is Comm: 98, Comp: 99, Perf: 98.
    Comm: 98 + Perf: 98 = 196 and Comp: 99/2 = 49.5 add them together and you get 245.50.
    My guess is that they wanted some judge of composition, but less of a judge for it than the actual performance on the field. That way an exceptional corp could outperform any bad music they had and still get a decent score, but a bad corp with good music wouldn't be carried by it's good music (though in practice, this wouldn't matter so much)

    The World Association of Marching Showbands (WAMSB) it's own judging system they call the One World Judging System. Every caption is well defined using simple words that can easily be translated to other languages (for example, instead of Content and Execution, they say What and How). I can't find a definition on how the total score is added up, but I think this is intentionally vague so local competitions can build their own scoring system off of these definitions based on local valuesand judge availability. This vagueness is also important because marching bands are extremely different around the world. For example, here in Canada, we try to emulate DCI corps, European bands are more militaristic, and Asian bands value cleanliness over difficulty. Band instrumentations vary, at the 2 WAMSB competitions I've taken part in, I've competed against marching bands, drum corps, pipe bands, fife corps, drumlines, and fanfarenzugs, with members aged from elementary school kids to all age groups, and from places like Canada, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Germany, and the Netherlands.

    I’d love to see a followup video comparing DCA and DCI scoring systems to the VFW and American Legion scoring systems. I’ve always heard that DCA and DCI scoring systems came about as a reaction to the inflexible and suffocatingly rigid rules of the VFW and AL, but I have never heard any intelligent discussion around what exact rules people disliked so much. It would be an interesting video.

    Side note, you should look at the scoring systems for pipe bands. I’d say review however they do it in the Honda battle of the bands competition (the hbcu competition the film drumline is based on) but I can’t find the rules online for judging, just the voting process to get there

    I agree with the thought that performance (should) have more impact on the scores. Most of the sheets address this in the content side of individual caption.
    My vote… break down UIL sheets. Different sheets for different contests (region level, area/state, level), and also different from classification/size.
    This is new for Texas high school marching bands this year.
    There is even room for interpretation within some of the captions. Example: does blend/balance in a percussion caption mean blend/balance to the winds when there is a full ensemble box?

    • @igachap7851

      What a nice way to say that Texas UIL score sheets are terrible and confusing… because I agree

    • @michaelhoffman3480
      @michaelhoffman3480 2 года назад +1

      @@igachap7851 I don’t want to sound like I’m crapping on them. As most judging rubrics do; they leave room for interpretation and preference.
      Most of the people judging(especially in the smaller classifications) are used to the old way of doing things, and I believe(and hope) next time around will be better.
      I do like the idea of caption specific judges(5A & 6A). I’ll say again though, not a big of the design portion having some much weight on the outcome.
      Change can be good, but growing pains are real.

    BOA should be lower. As someone who marches BOA, I can’t describe how annoying the judging system is. It’s split into two panels, so a set of judges will judge four bands, then another set of judges will judge four bands, and it’ll go back fourth. The score is then averaged up between the two panels. We didn’t make finals this year because of it and it’s so annoying

    • @sethleverett8889
