    That's a neat idea, to do a palette focussed on one colour. I was surprised not to see azo green on there; it's a gorgeous yellow-green that doesn't granulate, so it would be a neat one to mix with some of your more blue leaning or dark granulating greens.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад

      Ah, thanks for the suggestion! I should try that. I made this palette using only the greens I already had and I don't own an Azo Green. I'd purchased five greens the other week and it was after seeing how beautiful they looked together that I came up with the idea for this palette! So I decided to go through my entire collection to see which ones went well together. :)

    • @LindsayKitson
      @LindsayKitson 3 года назад

      @@NatashaNewtonArt it's a beautiful yellow-green, PY129, and gives granulating colours a luminous glow. Most brands call it green gold, but daniel smith's single pigment one is called rich green gold, and their green gold is a mix. I know you said you don't tend to like the yellower end of greens as much but it's a really great mixing colour and would be a good contrast to the bluer leaning greens in the palette if you ever decide to swap any of those colours out. :)

    Such a sweet little bird! I love the attention you pay to detail in your artwork. It's funny that the Prussian Green looks so blue on your swatch card. I put mine into a row with all of my blues and in that context it appears to be quite green. It probably is more of an in-between color, a teal or petrol hue. My viridian swatch on the other hand looks much greener than yours, definitely greener than the Fuchsite (moving more towards phthalo green). It's really interesting to see it in such a light wash. Quite a motiviation for me to experiment a bit more with this color.

    Love the idea of a green palette, but then I do love all greens :) You could also just have the lemon yellow pan as the thirteenth colour instead of the ready made mix, to have the option of shifting all the other greens in your palettes by mixing. I thought both the zoisite and perylene mixes were equally beautiful, would have had trouble choosing between them.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад

      Thanks Sigrún! I would have done that (it would certainly make sense), but I wanted the palette to contain greens only. That’s the only reason! The zoisite + lemon yellow mix won in the end purely because of the interesting granulation. 🖤💛

    • @sigrunella1
      @sigrunella1 3 года назад

      I totally get that, and it is certainly a beautiful palette. I seldom use colours straight from the pan myself, I always have to adjust them and muddy them up a bit especially my beloved greens ;) I love how differently we all use our supplies and find it very inspiring to see different approaches. And thank you for the lemon yellow zoisite/perylene recipies! Never thought of that myself.

    This video made me so happy!, I love that you have shared the whole process of creating a palette from swatching the paints to filling the pans in the final choice. Again it shows that you have such a great gift for choosing colours and putting them together,and I'm so glad you tried the experiment with adding lemon yellow (naples yellow also produces interesting mixes too,more muted) to get a colour that made it ino the final palette.
    I have loved putting my own palettes together,so thank you for that inspiration,but it made me realise we stop seeing all the colours we use as we get used to the,but creating themed palettes makes as look at the colours we use again in a whole new way and see new ways of using them too. This might be my new favourite of your bird paintings,he looks so lovely especialy as you embraced the wet in wet that happened it added to his character and the copper moon ties the painting together.

      @@NatashaNewtonArt I had watched other atists here on youtube talk about the A.Gallo paints,but watching your video's on them decided it for me,so thank you for that inspiration,I ordered the 48 set plus some of Alina's metallic/pearlescent paints too I know Alina's paint's are not cheap,but I figured to just go for it and get a large set and I can't wait for them to arrive!. Nickel Azo Yellow is also a good mixing colour too I can vouch for that as well. I have completed all my own pallettes now incuding two metallic ones,it was such a great thing to do,The way you showed how you created your greens palette was how I did all of mine too,but I have have had an idea for one last themed palette of blacks. I always use three blacks,Mars Black,Ivory Black and Lamp Black as they have undertones of colour in them. So inspired by that beautiful "Natures's Palette Book" I am going to find as many differnt handmade black watercolours as I can (on Etsty) and also create a range of tinted blacks in acrylics. I love the Gansai tinted black paints that you and I have and I love the idea of tinted/coloured blacks. There was an American abstract painter called Ad Rienhardt who did a whole series of what appear to be black paintings,but if you step to the side of one of then so the light hit's the surface differently they are actualy lmad up of diffent blacks in squares, what he called 'chromatic blacks' he mixed up black oil paint and other colors himself to create these tinted blacks,and I want to create a series of my own tinted black paintings traditionally and digitaly as well.

    Why didn’t you just pop a pure lemon yellow pan in so you can mix with any of the greens on he go

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад +1

      That would certainly be a good idea, the only reason is because I wanted this to be a palette of greens only. 💚

    Prussian Green is actually a turquoise, historically made of Prussian Blue and a yellow. I am not sure, but I think it is called green in the sense that it is a green shade of Prussian Blue, just as we have Phthalo Blue green shade and Phthalo Blue red shade. The reason why I am not sure about this is because George Field in his Chromatography, published in 1835, mentions:
    PRUSSIAN GREEN. The pigment celebrated under this name is an imperfect prussiate of iron, or Prussian blue, in which the yellow oxide of iron superabounds, or to which yellow tincture of French berries has been added.
    However, in 1885, J Scott Taylor (who edited and updated Field’s work and called it Field’s Chromatography) states:
    PRUSSIAN GREEN Like the preceding (Hooker’s Green) is composed of Prussian blue and gamboge; but contains a very large excess of Prussian blue. It is consequently a bluish-green of the utmost depth and transparency, verging on black in its deep washes.
    Based on the 1885 edition of Field’s Chromatography, it is obvious that Prussian Green is a turquoise since he is comparing it to Hooker’s Green, which is a proper green and also made of the same pigments as Prussian Green. I am not sure, though, why George Field specifically mentions that the yellow “superabounds” in the paint; that phrasing makes it seem as if Prussian Green has an abundance of yellow and hence is a proper green rather than a turquoise.
    Winsor and Newton swatches from the late 19th century and early 20th century show Prussian Green to be a turquoise hue. Those of you who are interested may refer to this digital edition of A Descriptive Handbook of Modern Watercolour Pigments, which is a turn-of-the-20th-century Winsor and Newton Publication: archive.org/details/gri_c00033125012285439/page/n3/mode/2up. The Prussian Green swatch is on page 4. This book also contains a lot of the same information from the 1885 edition of Field’s Chromatography.
    And, yes, I am a pigment nerd 😂

    Have you tried mixing greens with nikel azo yellow rather than lemon yellow? Not sure why but I much prefer the greens you get. Amazonite and nikel azo yellow is a fave mix. (Mission gold ‘green gold a good sub for NAY if you don’t have it)

      I don't own any Nickel Azo Yellow yet, but I may buy a tube and try it! I also don't have any Green Gold either. I'd be interested to experiment though! I really loved all of the mixes I got with the Lemon Yellow though, except for the mix with Viridian!

      I think sap green uses nickel azo pigment to give you an idea of the richness, it’s almost luminous.

    What a nice Birdie!!
    Your Green pallette is wonderful. And you are absolutely right. They are much more adorable if they're among themselves. It is a whole new approach to a colour group. Haven't seen it this way so far.
    And it is stunning that you only used greens besides that little moon of bronze, which fits perfectly to your artwork.

    Your art is so dreamy and fairytale like. I love this little bird! I think the palette is super interesting. I can imagine it working marvels in a full children's book illustration.
