  • Thank you to our patron Gail H for another great pick. I know this was a song written in response to another song we've listened to... "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor. He also did a version of this song and they both won grammys! That's wild. What a pat on the shoulder this track is. I really needed it.

They were friends. Carole was a very successful songwriter with her husband in the 60s. When she got divorced and moved out to California, James befriended her, and convinced her to start performing her own songs. When she heard "Fire and Rain", she wrote this song to support him.

I was having an event for women in our home maybe 10 years ago. I had the music lined up on the stereo and the Tapestry album came on. It was amazing how every woman there - it didn't matter her age or race - knew the words to this album. So an impromptu sing along happened, especially with this song.

There was an incredible group of musicians, singers, and songwriters in the 70's that all lived in Laurel Canyon and supported and nurtured each other. Carole King was one of them and the album cover photo was taken in her Laurel Canyon home. Also, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Eagles, CSN&Y, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Ry Cooder, Karla Bonoff, and several others. Their music made the 70's an incredible decade musically.

The Tapestry album is iconic, one of the best of the 70's. Carole King and James Taylor have great musical chemistry and are genuinely close friends. Carole's song "Natural Woman" was a other great hit from the album, and the legendary Aretha Franklin actually brought Barack Obama to tears by her performance of the song decades later ( worth a watch!).

Carole King's album Tapestry, released in 1971, is one of the greatest albums of the past 60 years, and when you observed she sang genuinely, I think that is a product of her path in music: She wanted to perform more than a decade early but didn't have the stereotypical looks studios wanted, so she and her husband, Gerry Goffin, became prolific songwriters as a side gig to their day jobs, Carole composing the music and Gerry writing most of the music. Their work became hits for a string of leading artists in the 1960s. even number one hits, but she was still an unknown, their marriage failed, so she gave recording another shot. By then she had experienced enough life, both hope and pain, that she performed her songs with a sincerity and passion that simply touches everyone who listens. Every track on Tapestry is a masterpiece and varied too, but I suggest one in particular to react to next: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? She and Gerry wrote the song when they had invested their live and hope into their marriage; she recorded it after that hope had been lost.

Yo, COMMENTS ARE NOT BEING POSTED! I posted 3 comments at the Deep Purple clip and they are NOT POSTED. I provided a couple links for you to check out but the comments ARE NOT POSTED. NO, I DID NOT USE ANY PROFANITY!
