The MACK E9 engines have four individual heads and four aluminum valve covers ,they are 998 ci. they have 3 tall oil filters side by side they hold about 18 gallons of oil the block is cast at a 90 degree angle for crankshaft strength when under load. it is a true truck engine made for heavy loads and has very quick response during shifting , they are better suited for owner operators or professional owners that will take proper care and maintenance. a well kept E9 is untouchable. and will sound nice , a beat up one with manifold leaks will sound like shit and will not spin the turbo fast enough to get max power. The 3408 CAT is around just over 1000ci. has 2 tall oil filters has one head per side w/ one valve cover per side the block is cast at a 60 degree angle which makes it more susceptible to crank failure when lugged on hills, the 3408 is used in trucks as well as the 988 cat loader and the D-8L dozer also a good engine if driven properly. but for truck, performance, looks, sound, and horsepower increase capability the E9 is the KING. but remember the E9 is wider than any other truck engine and will not fit in a conventional truck it has to be a RW- superliner or CL700 with the wide frame stance or the R700 prototype. but then again thats wye its the mighty MACK E9 (COSI BELLA) BIG AL BOSTON,MA.
"I say ,I say no way boy" The cat 3408 is around 60 degree or so if you stood on top the E9 engine and looked down at the distance between the heads you can tell , its much wider than other diesel v8 engines. thats wye they more better than good. don't you know boy.
If it was easy and cheap everyone who likes responsive power and good sound would have one. THERE AINT' NOTHING POLITICALLY CORRECT ABOUT IT , THATS WHY ITS MORE BETTER THAN GOOD.

I’d rebuilt three E9s for Hillbilly, two out of frame and one in frame and this was one of the out of frames I did about 2001. My favourite engine of all time ! These engines were good for 2 million kms when looked after properly
Yeah buddy my paternal side is from colonial Pennsyltucky Scots Irish and Lutheran German in the early days soldiers and farmers dad grew up driving trucks and Macks I was born in Lehigh valley Bethlehem!!
Love the sound of the Mack V8. I drove a 1973 RL700 back in the 80s 325 hp with the Mack 5 air shift speed and hi/lo. It had gobs of power for a solo dump truck.
Only thing I miss about being on the road, listening to that big V8 engine thumping it out all night you could hear mine coming 5 kilometres away or more
Out at huenden qld when they first came out at pickles roadhouse you could hear the crackle for ages before they would go past with 3 doublle decks on then crackle into the night heading east
@menz308 What did I just say. IT'S HIS TRUCK HE CAN DRIVE IT HOW HE WANTS, I didn't say that jake shifting was good for any engine, but I'm sure he doesn't do it every shift every day. Jake shifting an E9 once and awhile wont hurt it, letting it rev over 1900 on the jake will.
Truck sounds just delightful. It has the same gearbox as the moto from Terminator 1. Count the shifts and you will agree. I need you boots, sunglasses and some gearbox oil.
if you put an eaton autoshift in this it will jake change automaticly under certain conditions, my series 60 does it with an autoshift, so the old school of it doing damage to the engine is rapidly becoming not tru due to tec- Regards NZ Truckie
Poeple buy a Scania for the engine they say........and a Mack for the looks..... only this one really takes the best of it all , Scania is king of the scrapyard! I want a king of all roads! Hell yeah, A Mack.........
Man you could hear these things coming miles away if they were pulling a double up a grade. Pity they were so heavy on fuel, mine would do 1.4 km/ltr whereas a 400 Cummins would do 1.6 km/ltr
You know I love these old E9's, but can't find any video footage on ones in the U.S. I think I might move overseas. There seems to be more of them over there. Australia, Netherlands, New Zealand.
how did the MACK V8 engines hold up compared to a CAT 3406? i never heard much about the Mack V8s. i have seen a few Cummins 903, they were big but kind of doggy.
They were all good. When we hauled logs Taupo to Napier around 1989 I think which is when Storm had this truck, ours was a 440 so slower than Storm's, but Storm was outrun by a 900hp 3406 that would haul us all in like we were standing still. Can't quite remember the name of that owner but his was an easy day at the office with those hp on that road. Anyone that's ever driven the Napier-Taupo can attest to the challenge that road was (probably still is) - single lane each way - about 70 miles from Waimiha to Napier port with some very steep and tight pieces, followed by some long downhills that would be seat-gripping, even with Voiths and Brakesavers and Jakes. These Macks of course had none of these so we were slower downhill than up. Mack engine brakes in those days were pretty feeble
Were the dynatard engine brakes noticeably better, much stronger in the E9 V8 mack superliners compared to the r series 350hp 6 cylinder motors?? I only ever drove 3 different r series and unfortunately never got the chance to drive a E9 superliner.

He did, for about six months, until he failed to check for traffic and pulled out in front of an old guy in a car. I saw Bob pull up to the intersection at Waimiha, stop, then pull out, and when I pulled around onto the road, his truck was in the ditch on the other side of the road, and the old boy was sitting in his car all messed up. He was still conscious and told me I should take all the mussels he'd collected since he had no further use for them, but I don't believe he made it ultimately. I suppose Bob regretted failing to check properly the rest of his life. That was a nice truck though, with the 3408 custom-installed by Motortruck. Almost couldn't tell it wasn't the E9 until catching a glimpse of yellow under the front fenders. Was a nice blue color with orange chassis if I recall correctly.
@@kronickiller apparently some of the R series could be specced with a detroit in the day. I know of one that had the 8v92 specced in it from factory. @Bush600R I see your point mate but to advise you on the old Mack's as of the superliner valueliner and ultraliner all came out with the E7 or the E9 v8 straight from factory. Now as for a detroit motor being put in. Mostly a owner that is going to buy one from factory can pay for a detroit to be converted over. And %90 of the R models came out with the E7 6cylinder
you cant beat the sound off a v8 mack superliner cheers
yes you can. SCANIA !
no. scania's for pussies.
Scania v8 and Mack e9 are both Very GOOD and sound amazing!
Then I guess you have never heard the sweet sound of a well kept 8V92 with real mufflers on it . The sound is music to my ears
The Scanias sound good , but the E9 sounds more like rolling thunder has more of that thump sound

Thanks for the vid! To Mack bring back the Superliner as it was the best looking truck made in my opinion and the h** with the aero dynamic bulls***!
There's just nothing like the sound of an 8-cyl diesel engine! As distinctive as an AK-47. Probably just as fun, as well!
a AK47, grest analogy!! Love that
Great sound...I wish we had trucks like this in Norway too...:-D...Reminds me a little of a Scania V8...
Børge Undheim Mack made these engines for scania
Scania design that engine I get into arguments all the time pull a Mack engine apart and have a look at the Scania emblems inside the block
