We loooooooved cloth diapering our daughter when she was little. We saved all the diapers and are now going to use them on baby sister. We're hoping to use them from birth this time, last time we used them from about week 5.
Have you looked into EC (elimination communication)? We did a lighter/easier version where we sat baby on the potty (from 5 weeks) whenever we changed her diaper, and after a short while she totally caught on and would from then most often go poop on the potty. It saved us a lot of hassle having to deal with poopy diapers. I urge everyone to give it a go, it's easier than having to learn baby's signs and signal (ec at its core) for when they need to go potty.

I have a 6 month old & he’s started playing with solids recently. We started having a hard time getting the diapers clean & we started storing the dirty diapers in a trash can with water & vinegar. When I throw them in the washer I dump the vinegar water in with them & do a rinse & then heavy wash. This makes them so clean! Before we were doing 2 heavy washes.

    • @Just.another.mom3
      @Just.another.mom3 3 года назад +2

Careful that vinegar can wear the elastics and PUL and snaps, just rinse the poo and then do 2 washes cold then warm

A trick for poo diapers is to place a disposable (or fabric/ one reusable wipe) square inside the diaper. If you are using disposable the majority of the poo is simply thrown away. If using fabric these can be separated into a soaking bucket first. I have also seen people reuse and wash the extra over of material if the diaper is just wet, but throw away if soiled! All up to preference but makes a huge difference and means a lot less scrubbing or extra washes equalling the diapers lasting longer!!

Love this video and the realness. I feel like cloth diapering gets the same stigma as breastfeeding....in the way that people think it has to be all or nothing. We put cloth ones on my son for daytime and use bamboo based disposable ones just for night and travel. It works for us and is a happy middle ground. And buying them second hand is super affordable. I go back and forth between loving insert diapers and all in one ones. Thanks for bringing awareness to a topic that intimidates so many people!

A great tip for night nappies is little lambs bamboo nappies. They are a 2 in one system. I used a fleece cover as these I found last the best over night. It can be very hit and miss and we sometimes used natural disposables at night too. Wool covers are great for nighttime too.

I’ve cloth diapered 3 babies from infancy to potty train. We use Alva pockets exclusively! What I would say is : yes 18 if fine! BUT if you can have closer to 30, the diapers will get used less per child, and will not need replaced for YEARS. I have the same diapers that I bought for my first baby and they still are in wonderful condition. I don’t baby mine either! We use tide, and dry in the dryer on medium heat! In 2019, I had my 2year old, 1yr old, and newborn ALL in Alva cloth diapers! Saves us thousands. Formula poop is water solvable just like breastmilk poop. :)

Cloth diapers are amazing! And you’re 100% right, they are SO much easier to use than you’d expect. There is a price range for everyone, “China cheapies” like Alva, Bumgenius, $30+ for Blueberry or Smartbottoms or $40+ for work at home mom diapers. You want good detergent because you’re washing the dirtiest laundry you’d ever wash - literal poop. As baby gets older you may find the microfiber inserts aren’t cutting it and you get leaks. Prefolds are an awesome and natural fiber to use! Hemp is also great for night time. Be careful ordering Bamboo/Charcoal Bamboo from amazon - be sure to check the fiber content. A lot of times it’s just a very thin layer of of bamboo terry and a microfiber core. We cloth diapers both babies and now I sew them for a business! They’re addicting!

My baby boy is 9 weeks old and I LOVE cloth nappies/diapers. I'm using a mix of muslins, prefolds and wraps, all in ones and pocket nappies. Pocket nappies are my favourite so far.

I loved little lambs. Although I didn’t rate the covers. The elastic on the legs was very harsh as it’s a double gusset. I don’t think I tried their pocket nappies. Just the bamboo nappies with a cover. I preferred fleece or minky covers

Great info! I cloth diapered both of my daughters using the same diaper stash. One tip though - the reason most detergent isn’t good for cloth diapers is because it can cause a buildup that makes the inserts and covers repel liquid. So the pee just pours out the leg holes. We used powdered Tide (only a few tablespoons) which was recommended at the time. And girl - try a BumGenius. OMG.

  • @ShawnaRae

Hey Nikki! I’m not a mom but I used to nanny for a wonderful family of three kids and the two year old was wearing hybrid cloth diapers (I believe that’s what they’re called). The “inserts” were directly on the little one’s bottom and it was suuuper soft and comfortable. Plus it was easier to change because most of the time I only had to change the insert and not the whole diaper (unless there was leakage). I also found it easier to clean the poop off since again I was only cleaning the insert and not the whole diaper, which would’ve been very bulky and difficult to do in my opinion. Mind you she was two years old and was eating solids so her poops were completely different from a new born! Just thought I would share my experience. I love you and your wonderful family ❤️

I loooved this video, Nikki! Thank you for being so real, and putting this out there even though you don't feel super well versed in the topic yet. I'm cloth diapering my first, and it's been tough (mine have been leaking a lot - but I did get them secondhand). I appreciated that you said you don't do anything special to wash them, as that was a huuuge reason I was afraid to start using cloth diapers. I agree that it feels really good to use them, and that disposables do seem like throwing away money. Thank you for uploading!

Love the video! Very informative. My perspective as an infant "teacher" AKA care taker in a Pennsylvania Daycare: If you plan to use cloth diapers while sending your child into a public childcare center, PLEASE don't forget to have a conversation with the teachers/caretakers of the room. Many preschools/daycares do not offer professional development/training when it comes to cloth diapers. It never hurts to make sure the teachers/caregivers are familiar with them. ALSO- check in with the teachers about the diapering situation as time goes on. I had a child in my care who we used cloth diapers with, and at first they were great! But over time it became quite a nuisance. Despite changing him every hour, trying different brands of diapers, etc. He was just constantly leaking out of them. We were having to change his clothing multiple times a day because of the diaper leakage. Thankfully, his mother was flexible and understood how it was becoming an issue. He also was quite a healthy, but wonderfully chunky baby, so his legs would get severe chaffing from the leg holes. Each baby is different, so this situation could be less common than other cloth diaper users. Hope this helps give some perspective from a teacher/caregiver point of view!

So the diapers don’t stain? Because when my son has blowouts (he’s EBF), it tends to stain the clothes and I usually have to use a special baby stain remover and dry it in direct sunlight to get that yellow colour out. I’d like to cloth diaper, this is actually super encouraging ☺️

I worked full time outside the house and I was lucky enough to find a daycare that would use the cloth diapers. So I needed about 30 diapers to be able to make sure I had enough clean and dry every day to send to daycare. I used Alva Baby too though, and bought some of mine second hand. I only paid about $160 for all my diapers plus the pail and diaper sprayer and I never noticed a difference in water or power when I was cloth diapering. Cloth diapering for us was SUCH a money saver!

Major tip for solid poops: Get yourself a cheap fleece blanket and cut it up into strips (about the size of the inserts). When you put the diapers together, lay the fleece strips inside the diaper. It acts as a barrier for the poop, keeps the diapers nicer for longer, and if you’re ever out and about and don’t want to mess with cleaning the poop, you can just throw the strip away because they’re so cheap. We used the strips for a while and eventually started just using them whenever we left the house. Either way, it was super helpful for us :)

I've also seen other brands/non-pocket diapers that have different types of inserts that snap right inside of the covers so you can potentially reuse the covers more than once.

I'm genuinely tempted to start a cloth diaper (that word doesn't feel natural as a british person) stash, even though I'm a few years away from having a baby. My partner feels weird about the idea of washing things that have poop on them in the washing machine, but that happens whether you use cloth nappies or not! That's just part of having a baby! I'll probably convince him, because it's just so much better!

This is not a critic, but a different opinion where I would love to hear an update when Logan is older and you are a more out-and-about family with multiple children.....Back during my nannying days I nannied for a family with 4 kids (2 in diapers @ a time) and we used the same cloth diapers. While I understood the cost effectiveness and the lack of plastics/waste/etc, I found them difficult during times of travel and with more than one child using them. We also had 2 out of the 4 children have horrible diaper rash due to the cloth diapers being so close to their skin without taking the liquid away. We would try to stay on top of changing diapers when we were at home, but typical diapers were still the best solution. Whenever we went out it made things much more difficult. Once they started eating solid food (and their waste consistency changed) the diaper situation was worse. I can't wait for your followup videos where you see the differences as Logan grows and as your lifestyle changes. Overall, thank you for the video! Praying blessings for you and your family!

27:17 you can actually just lay the insert inside the diaper for pocket diapers. Nora's Nursery actually mentions it as an option when you receive their product. We do that to keep the polyester off of baby's skin.

Yes, definitely do not reuse the shell on pocket diapers. There are different kinds where you can use the shell but pockets aren’t one of them. Awesome video!!

I used these for two yrs loved them. Did have to use an extra cleaning product when solids where introduced to stop bacteria and I used flushable nappy inserts (sort of like a dry wipe) so would just pop that in the toilet when I changed the nappy and they remained clean. I never brought new ones so they cost me around the same and they saved me two years of nappy costs when my daughter was older and had very big wee and didn’t wake trough the night I did use disposables for that as i didn’t want to wake her to change her through the night but I only brought 2 boxes of nappys before she was toilet trained

Fleece liners are fab. 15 is a good place to start but if you don’t want to be washing to often you will need around 30. It can be expensive at first but once you have them you have them for a very long time.

I don't know how you do it, I'm not a mom or pregnant or even thinking about having kids on the next few years, but I loved the video and was very insightful. I did work on a nursery and one of the baby's had very similar diapers and we did that part of taking off the poop, but she only used ir for a couple of months because then there was a lop of spillage and the parents just went back to disposable diapers. I do think this is a topic not talked about enough because as you just don't see this options on around in stores, or at least where I live you don't, many people don't even know they exist or how they work and I do think that I will give it a go once I'm a mom :)

Condensed cloth diapering wisdom for 1, going on 2 kids: coconut oil works perfectly if you run into diaper rash. Grapefruit seed oil and water and gentle baby soap make perfect wipe solution. (Grape seed oil prevents mold) Water in a spray bottle also, fine and very hypoallergenic. I only ran into stink issues after solids. My solution for that was to switch to flats and covers. Cotton flour sac towels and cotton muslin flats are my fav (muslin flats from green mountain diaper with their brand of cover). COTTON COTTON COTTON. I find synthetic fibers hold stink. You can add a fleece insert for dryness protection if you want. You can also put flats in a pocket diaper. And lastly Tide free and clear POWDER is my fav for getting stink out, also if needed, drying in the sun. I love cloth diapering! Thanks for spreading the CD gospel.

Nikki! i am no professional on cloth diapers either! but i wanted to share what i learned! i had twins (boy and a girl justvturned 18 months) and we started with disposable then switched to cloth as well just like you did. We have about 40 diapers id say altogether and its way more than enough for both babies. I am now back in disposables and will use cloth if i notice they start rashing or have any kind of irritation (wgich has only happened once thank goodness! but i think it is because my hubby and i have always been super cautious of their skin because the twins are suuuper sensitive to a lot of things. I got mine on Ebay and didnt go name brand because of the price! (saving money tip!) AND they were the pocket ones like yours!. Also, I ordered more than the normal amount of inserts and would use like 2-3 sometimes as they grew and the amount of pee increased especially overnight.
Sorry this is a ton of info! lol side note: we use sovereign silver for rashes and it has worked better than any other creams out there and is all natural!! we learned this the hard way after tryibg all kinds of creams (prescribed and OTC) until my best friend recommended it!
Let me know if u have any questions! like i said, not an expert here but feel i can share tips after having twins! hahaha..

I’ve always wondered about the environmental impact of disposables. Thanks for the video! Hopefully my future fam will be as adorable as yours

Alvababy does also have bamboo inserts, those are the kind that I ordered with my daughter for the diapers I use with her. There are also liners you can order on amazon that sit on top of the diaper that you can just pull off and throw away and they are biodegradable as well. It helps with the poop diapers 😊. I actually didn’t do any research before choosing to cloth diaper my daughter when she was born 7 months ago but I had a family meme her that did it and ever since then I knew I wanted to do it

I've been cloth diapering for 9 months now. I don't exactly follow the instructions of cloth diapering on the internet.. but I do have my own routine.
After use I prefer to pre rinse them in cold water and then put them in the diaper bucket.
Then laundry day, I just put them in the washing machine and use normal detergent without any softener and wash with cold water. When they're done, I hang them dry in the sun. Simple as that.
My baby don't have any problems with this routine. I do strip wash them with a little bit of bleach once a month to get rid of any accumulating funny smell and avoid yeast things.
It doesn't have to be difficult.

Alvababy diapers are even cheaper than Amazon on their actual website. The only issue is they can take 2-3 weeks to get and Amazon is faster! Love my cloth diapers, just started a few months ago and I agree it’s SO MUCH easier than I expected! ❤️

Another trick when babies start to have normal food poo is to add a disposable (or fabric/one reusable wipe) square in the nappy. If using disposable, the main bulk of the poo is thrown away, if using fabric they can go into a seperate soaking bucket then into the wash. So so much easier!

I feel like if you stuff the diapers correctly for your child and how heavy of a wetter they are, they cloth diapers are actually more absorbent than disposable. The few times I had to use disposables I always had issues with them.

  • @CorinneRose

@NikkiPhillippi Dont put your diaper Shells in the dryer. The waterproof lining in it will fade after some time and your diapers will start leaking and you will have to buy new ones. Also of you have hard water, you have to use a water softener for the washer or the hard water will build up and cause leaking problems too. ❤

I’m convinced and want to buy cloth nappies now even though I don’t have any kids nor am I pregnant 😆 My mum tried using cloth nappies with me and my brother but gave up because she found it too difficult, I wonder if they were a lot harder to wash / less reliable back then.

I use cloth sanitary pads too. They are brilliant. I love them. So much nicer than the plastic ones. I used washable breast pads too and cloth wipes too. I made some of my own wipes from a muslin cloth and some flannels. I stored the dirty inserts in water but not the shells. So wet wee inserts were soaked. Poo ones I would store dry until I rinsed or rinse straight away in a bucket then put them in with the wee ones. Never soak the cover as it will become less absorbent and will degrade fast.

Sadly, formula poops are not water-soluble, only exclusively breastfed poops are! Great video Nikki :) I use Flip covers with prefold and flour sack towels but am thinking about getting some pockets like you have for when I'm doing diaper changes in a hurry. Also, it's pretty easy to find pre-loved (used) cloth diapers on fb marketplace and other platforms. So if you need to save money but don't want Alvas for one reason or another, those are great resources for building your stash without breaking the bank. Just need to sanitize them before use.
