If you read the Itchy Tasty book by Alex Aniel, you'd know that the whole thing of RE2 having two discs was pretty much a miscalculation on Capcom's part, which could've instead been combined into one disc had they've been more careful with what to keep and what to take out with the unnecessary duplicated data on both discs. Why do you think they were able to keep it all in one disc for the GameCube and one cartridge for the N64?

A great series yet again. Many facts even I didn't know, despite being an RE geek since 98. I've watched so many videos here and kinda forgot if you already covered the history of RE 3.5. Have to refresh my memory later. If it wasn't for Sugimura, Resident Evil might not exist these days and most likely Kamiya would have ended the series prematurely. He unfortunately passed away in 2005 and I think one of his final works ever was a draft for Resident Evil 4 which tunred to Haunting Grounds. I miss his style and it is most unfortunate he didn't live long enough to see how Resident Evil died and came back from the dead, making one of the greatest comebacks in the gaming landscape. Think he would be proud of the RE2 Remake.

Originally Ada was going to follow Leon throughout most of RE2, joining Leon and Ada(Linda) was Marvin who was going to originally be a second supporting character for Leon, originally Leon's name was also going to be Grant Bitmen, but they later changed it to Leon towards the 60%/70% build of RE1.5.
Elza Walker(Claire Redfield) was going to be supported by Sherry and Kendo(Kendo was originally going to be named John)
Also in the 1.5 Build of RE2 Leon was going to have shorter more slicked back hair. And additionally Roy who was in the 1.5 build is the character model they later used for Leon in the final build of RE2 with some minor alterations, mostly that Roy's glasses were removed when the model was turned into Leon.

While the game has the iconic museum-police station which we remembered so fondly, it always made me feel how unrealistic the police station is. Even as a museum the path is so small that it doesn't felt like one. The car park is so narrow that you can't even park a car properly. So many police, yet so small the police station is.

    • @thermonuclearcollider4418
      @thermonuclearcollider4418 2 месяца назад +1

I agree. RE2 is my favorite (along with C:V), but I remember playing it for the first time and thinking the police station felt odd at best. Also, it is a mashup of different designs and some of them are actually taken from real (or "film-real") police stations: the conference room is lifted from the Detroit PD conference room from "Robocop 3" (which was shot in Atlanta - I think they built the DPD in a fire station). I still think the RPD would've worked as a more realistic location: the one in 1.5 was sterile and pristine, but a more lived-in and semi-destroyed police station would've fit in. My two cents is that they were a bit more conservatives after 1.5's botched development.

You can see the importance of SEGA back then, cause is more than obvious that they based their designs in Virtua Cop and virtua fighter, i mean, Jill and Cris look like virtua cop characters and Leon looks like Lion from virtua fighter 2, Capcom did support heavily the Saturn, and was a big console in japan at the time so it isn´t a surprise if they took inspiration on those games, also in the movie Terminator 2, mister X is the terminator and Lion is a mix between a cop and John Connor

Even when i love Re 1.5 and it has some designs that i was expecting at the time, like the jail zone and other stuff, must admit that Re 1.5 looks like an average game from the time, there were some games that looked and felt like that, but Re2 has STYLE, lots of style, the aesthetic feels more dynamic, it´s a game that makes you feel in action, the first game was more slow and mysterious the second one is more gory and action based, besides the graphics are far superior, so they really knew their stuff back then to notice that, if Re 1.5 came like that it would have felt like "just one more game" like Martian Gothic or Deep Fear on Saturn, Re2 really feels ,looks and plays far superior to it´s clones, you can tell that they really work on that game

The 1.5 prototype would have equally benefited from Sugimura's plot revisions. A modern RPD built by Umbrella with a corrupt police chief would have made for newer, more interesting traps and arrangements than trying to fall back on "if it ain't broke don't fix it" with mansions and dated architecture. The factory could have been as equally interesting.
1.5 had the makings of a good sequel but the decision to scrap everything for an RE1 mansion and older elements in place of newer ones squashed its potential.

Yeah we got references to it but just outfit references like Elza Walker isn't enough. The remake should've included some of the beta content like the man-spiders and whatnot seeing as it cut the spider enemies entirely for whatever reason. I would not at all call the story of the original idea "boring". It's still essentially the same story but with various details reworked for the final.
For Leon, him starting out in another outfit is not speculation. It's confirmed in The PlayStation Magazine in the 1998 June issue in an interview with Hideki Kamiya and Noboru Sugimura that he was going to change outfits but that they didn't end up having that due to an issue with the CG (IMAGICA, the company that did the CG cutscenes, from my understanding ended up not wanting to make more stuff for as production dragged on so various things from 1.5's CG cutscenes were put into the final version, so they likely didn't want to make a whole new model for Leon in civilian clothes if I had to guess (and it's likely also why Ada has no model for the CG scenes as they didn't have a model in 1.5 for her final design)). For Elza, she actually started as Rachel Speyer in early concepts and Claire herself came in more in the transitioning into 2 period instead of wholey made for the final version of 2 itself.
Whether or not Ada is intended to work for Umbrella in the final version of 2 isn't exactly clear as they just call it The Agency, which could very well be Umbrella being the ones that were intended to send her in, but with the material made up after 2 it solidified more as her being sent in by The Agency/The Organization (The World Xenobiology Company if we're going by the name from the concepts of Code Veronica). They actually had ideas to have John as part of the story for 2, though he and Ada would never have met.
For the hole in the wall in the labs I have wondered if maybe that would've been caused by Birkin's arm. In beta ideas they had for later forms of Birkin (I think the third or fourth form) his arm would have come off and become a creature of its own that you would have had to deal with separately. I'd wondered if maybe it'd have been tunneling through the area creating that hole as an entrance into or exit from the wall.
The Tyrant of the game, while the serial number on the canister in T-00, its actual type is T-103. And though it became known as "Mr. X" overseas due to marketing overseas, it is not called Mr. X in the universe of the game itself. It's just a T-103 Tyrant.
For 1.5 I wouldn't say that it's a "failure" as, firstly, it didn't come out so we don't know how reception would have been, and secondly, from what I've seen, though more dull, it certainly looks like a stable entry of the series to me.

I think RE2 was and still is amazing but it took a step back with boss designs. I like the giant mutated animals of RE1. Also from what I understand the sequel to RE2 was originally going to be Code Veronica with Nemesis being a side story to RE2, but somewhere down the line a decision was made to switch them around. I think it was either to do with RE3 getting bigger and having more in it to the point it was sequel quality or release schedules but don't quote me on those.

You are correct; Code veronica is the original Resident evil 3, and the true trilogy. What transpired was that Sony was angry because Capcom wouldn't finish the trilogy on PS1 by placing Re3: Code veronica on Sega Dreamcast - and since Capcom didn't want to piss Sony off, they decided to label RE: Nemesis as part 3. At the time, Capcom wasn't the powerhouse it is today, so they couldn't risk pissing Sony off.
Resident evil Nemesis didn't move the story forward, the game was mainly about Jill's escape from Racoon City. Thus, it doesn't deserve to be part of the trilogy. Code Veronica progressed the story forward and in my opinion, concluded the initial plans Spencer, Marcus and Edward had: improvement of human DNA becoming a God while still maintaining a regular human body, which is what Alexia perfected! After CV, there is no boss better or more interesting than Alexia.
I love Resident evil: Nemesis (I never call it "part 3"), it was my first RE game ever and the first time a video game scared me! I see why people think its part of the trilogy; it highlights the destruction of Raccoon City, and that's usally the conclusion to every zombie movie. However, the game doesn't conclude the story regarding Umbrella. In CV, we see the destruction of the Ashford family, co-founders of Umbrella, and they even brought Wesker back, the main antagonist of the series. I actually often consider CV to be a sequel to Re1.

@@differentsame9402The basic story is that Capcom was under a contractural obligation to Sony to have three numbered titles on the PlayStation. With the console's reign on the market about to end with the PlayStation 2's approach, Capcom decided that "Resident Evil 3", a game in development for the Dreamcast, would be renamed "Resident Evil CODE:Veronica" and a smaller game in development for the PlayStation be renamed with the '3'.
      The misunderstanding:
The belief is the result of a few of misunderstandings about the series:
There was no Sony deal. People are mistaking it for Shinji Mikami's deal with Nintendo in 2001 over GameCube exclusivity of the remake and numbered titles.
Hideki Kamiya has been cited before talking about working on a "BIOHAZARD 3", but he's talking about Devil May Cry and not CODE:Veronica, which he wasn't involved in.
      The truth
There was indeed a name change, but it isn't what a lot of people think. Hideki Kamiya's "BIOHAZARD 3" title (starring HUNK on a cruise liner) was predicted to be released after the PlayStation 2, so in mid-1998 Capcom ordered him to move the project to a PS2 SDK to avoid losing serious money (this was the era where SEGA could have all games for a console cancelled the day the replacement is released - developers were very worrisome about outdated hardware). This meant re-starting the project on an unfamiliar software, so Capcom was left without any big titles for the older PlayStation console.
The reason for the name change, therefore, was all about money. Knowing that numbered sequels are very attractive to customers (who see it as being superior to numberless titles), Capcom decided that Kazuhiro Aoyama's Resident Evil 2 side-story "BIOHAZARD 1.9" should have the '3' number instead. This was a very controversial decision, as 1.9's small budget nature risked it looking rushed in comparison to Resident Evil 2 - Shinji Mikami threatened to quit Capcom over it and Hideki Kamiya to this day calls the game "a piece of shit" due to its unworthy number.
      In brief:
Capcom wanted to end the PlayStation with a '3' game so it would have a profitable ending on the console, and knew "Resident Evil Survivor" wouldn't do it. CODE:Veronica was always CODE:Veronica, however.

@@White927 there's no source that confirms Capcom having contractual obligation with Sony to finish the trilogy on PS1. However, they did have contractual obligation to give Sony 3 numbered titles, not necessarily a trilogy. Shinji Mikami wanted to title RE Nemesis as "Resident evil 1.9," and that would have finalized their contractual obligation to give Sony 3 numbered titles with RE1, RE2 and RE1.9. Then, Re0 was going to N64 and I personally believe RE3CV was going to Sega Dreamcast (the most powerful console at that time). That would have given each console a numbered title(s).
There is no source that states "Code veronica was always suppose to be code veronica". That was something you copy and pasted from a Reddit thread board, my friend. Again, if Mikami and Okamoto discussed that RE games will sell better and make more money with numbered titles, then what makes you think they didn't consider numbering CV as well?
Either way, Mikami and Okamoto made a huge mistake in not numbering Code veronica. It literally concludes the destruction of Umbrella and this game accomplished umbrella's original goal: to create a virus that turned man into a God while retaining the human form, which was what Alexia accomplished! For this reason, you can't expect me to believe Okamoto and Mikami didn't consider titling it RE3 (or a different number). There's no way "code veronica was always just going to be code veronica." After CV, the series took a whole different turn. Thus, CV represents the end of old school style resident evil games.

@@differentsame9402 Sony wasn't involved. There was no contractual obligation on CAPCOM's part to release a trilogy on the Playstation. CAPCOM's Yoshiki Okamoto insisted on a trilogy for sales reasons, as it was simply the most popular console.

BIO2's success showed this top team should be headed by Hideki Kamiya. The BIO3 project was rebooted on the PS2 as BIOHAZARD 4 directed by Kamiya with a "full model change" being the goal. This became Devil May Cry, and the BIO4 project was rebooted on the Gamecube with Hiroshi Shibata as director. That was rebooted as the BIO4 directed by Mikami, due to technical limitations.
BIOHAZARD 1.9 was a side-story directed by The 4th Survivor designer Kazuhiro Aoyama with an indie style for hardcore fans of BIO1. However, when BIO3 was rebooted on the PS2, Okamoto was adamant about having a trilogy on the PS1 and promoted BIO1.9 to main game status to the chagrin of Mikami and others who threatened to resign, as it would force the game to be caught in-between two things (indie game or main game). BIO1.9 became BIOHAZARD 3 LAST ESCAPE.
CODE:Veronica began as and always was CODE:Veronica, it was conceived as an apology to SEGA fans for aborting the Saturn port of BIOHAZARD 2 since the console's technical limitations made them unsatisfied with the port's quality. CAPCOM expected the Dreamcast to sell a million units in Japan and were hoping that would translate to CV's sales. The USS soldiers also use the MP-5, a 9mm SMG; the MC51 is an American-produced modification of the G3, its 7.62mm battle rifle older brother. The weapon was designed for the British Special Air Service as a compact automatic weapon in a large caliber, capable of stopping most targets in a few shots. It taking up two item slots is likely for balance reasons, and its in-world model seems to have been reskinned in part for the MAC-11, which in real life is substantially smaller.
