Big thanks to @EdinburghDroneCompany for throwing a Nano + to play with for the week. Sorry it's a long one; and sorry for the rant but it's such a stupid and pointless bug! As usual, thoughts below everyone. Cheers!
I got mine yesterday. Many firmware updates were waiting to be downloaded. Updated everything. During the very second flight the screen freezed. Had to turn both the Nano and RC off and on to be able to fly 3 more minutes before the screen freezed again. This, and the voice telling me the connection with the aircraft was lost (once again) made me decide to return the Nano+. It' a shame Autel did'nt put in more effort in their firmware because this drone really has potential when looking at the video quality.
ya know what I did when my nano thought there was something in front of it? Cleaned the fingerprints off the front sensors. When you take the gimbal cover off you probably inadvertently touch them like I do. Also, flying into the sun doesn't help. Mine has been amazing and I love it. No real complaints.
I agree with what you said in your last video, competition is needed in the industry, I’ve just never seen anything that shows DJI is inferior to anyone, nice job Ian
Hi Ian this is my case, i repoted to Autel On Friday, March 18, I received my Autel Nano+ Serial xxxx, purchased at Autelpilot, that's the day I charged the batteries and the control, connecting the control with the Readmi Note 9S cell phone, and installed its AutelSky application, when I connected the Nano+ it asked me to do the firmware update, which went smoothly, I did the same for each battery and Autel Skype didn't ask me to do any more updates. That same day I did short test flights and without any problems, everything seemed to work well. On Saturday, I tried to do other test flights again and the app asked me to update the firmware which I did apparently without any problem. Since then, all the flights I have done have had the same problems: 1. Auto take off doesn't work, nano+ turns on motors but won't take off 2. Manual takeoff, I turn on the motors manually and when I give the lift lever it doesn't take off, today I realized that you have to leave the lever up for more than two seconds for it to take off. 3. The right lever for lateral and forward movements does not work when the front or front sensors of the Nano+ have a lot of light or are facing the direction of the sun, setting the sun behind the Nano+ works without problem, the same at night. 4. The autofocus is not working, I have videos that are really worthless 5. The crooked horizon The are some way to reinstall the firmware to Nano+, since this problem was when it asked me to do the second firmware update. My name is Herman Frias, I live in Caracas, Venezuela, and I own a Dji Mavic Mini, which replace my old mini with the best drone on the market and so far I can't say that. Greetings and thanks for your attention Good morning, Last week i did the firmware update 1.2.14 and the app 1.2.17, and the same problems continue, additionally: 1. When I turn on the Nano it tells me that there is a new update, I do it 2.Remote Control version stays in red V1.0.4.2 3. The gimbal stays at 99% when I auto-calibrate Two weeks have passed since my first complaint and I have not received a response. If I don't have a response soon, I will make my claim with PayPal for the return of my money. It is not safe to fly this drone with all these problems
If I had bought one and experienced this on the first flight, I would be livid. These aren't niggles either; lack of speed, untrustworthy obstacle avoidance ... 😱I was sceptical after seeing previous reviews over the last couple of months, mainly it's lack of stability and it's poor handling in the wind. I was hoping that the recent update had fixed all of these issues. Apparently not. Considering the price tag, this should be perfect, and far superior to the Mini 2 (which is 18 months old). But it clearly isn't. Yes, the camera is stunning. But everything else is underwhelming at best. "And for that reason ... I'm out" 😒 Thanks for sharing the video, it will certainly make many folks' decision a lot easier 👍
Cheers Clinka. I don't want to be so definite on the first flight, so will be playing around all weekend with it. But the speed did not look good flying into the breeze.... Jury is out...
Everything you found with this drone is still evident today. I just purchased one recently, 1st drone. And had the exact same experience yesterday flying it for the second time. The first flight there were no issues as it was midday, light to no wind. Yesterday was a different story altogether. An hour or two before sunset, winds 9 gusting to 13. The obstacle avoidance kept kicking in and the drone would not fly forward at times at around 250’ AGL. Managed to get past that by dropping altitude.
Agreed, you would think that they’d want this issue to go away and the best way to do that would be to fix it, not ignore it. I like everything else about it otherwise.
It had the same issue on the next two flights. After looking into it further and finding out it had been an issue for so long I sent it back and got a refund.
Big Kudos for a straightforward review. Bottom line that I got was that what the camera has to offer is lost in ability for flight. You said something towards the end about "I want to like this little drone . . . ", I found this amusing because I share the same sediment. Why can't they fix this? I'm still moving forward with the purchase because it was the camera that drew it to me in the first place. As far as getting it home, well I've been warned.
Hi again, Ian, from Wisconsin. I have been flying my Mini 2 for 9 weeks now and enjoying it because of your initial review and subsequent tips. I enjoyed your video and the rant which reflects the disappointment many others have expressed concerning the Nano+. I mentioned previously that I liked your video concerning the “light” in the video. The science is great, but as my wife says, “Someone is watching over you.” I hope you have a full recovery soon. Cheers.
It does seem that Autel has still not resolved the obstetrical avoidance issue which will keep me in the DJI drone where I don't have these issues. I really wish Autel would be a competitor to DJI, but it won't with these kinds of issues. That's unfortunate. Thank you for the update. Cheers.
Glad you got your hands on it Ian! Got one since January, love it! Yes, I do have the same obstacle avoidance problem facing sun sometimes. (just one click to disable it so not a big problem for me) In my opinion the camera beats the Mavic 3, just spectacular , even at night. Also found one more problem with it, the automatic battery discharging does not work for me. Hope they'll fix it soon. Dynamic tracking still missing as well.
Hi. After watching your previous video I too cancelled my pre-order from last December with the same retailer. I wouldn’t have minded waiting so much if the retailers had a realistic idea of when they were due their deliveries and how many of each colour to expect. I got the impression they’re just getting very few per delivery. Now after watching this I’m even more convinced I made the right decision and like many others I will go for the ‘Mini 3’ which from what I’ve seen of DJI so far will be a better experience. Thanks for sharing this.
Excellent Ian. Makes me feel so much better about my cancellation. I wish Autel well and glad that there is competition but this alas is late in the day for issues to be hanging over it. Hope your leg gets better.
I got an Nano plus and just tested the obstacle avoidance while facing the low sun. It doesn't have this low sun light fake warning problem at all. You may try to do an auto-calibration of the camera sensor. The way to do the auto-calibration is to fly at around 5 m height with some buildings or trees infront. Then do a repeated left-right motion (around 5-6 m distance) with speed around 1-2 m/s while facing the trees and buildings for around 3 minutes. The idea is to let the drone see the objects in front. With proper GPS signal and the photoes taken, the drone will then do auto camera calibration. Hope that will solve your problem.
This pretty much summed up my experience with the nano+. Obs avoidance was disabled as it crippled the already poor flight ability compared to the mini2. As stated before, sent back as no confidence flying in any wind. No point having a better camera if you lose the footage due to non return. Shame really ... bring on the mini3.
Hey Dewie! Really glad you got your Air2S back (again 🤣🤣) Anyone reading this, check out the most insane drone rescue near Moab, Utah: ruclips.net/video/n6LeaFZ3P_c/видео.html
My Mavic pro used to have obstacle avoidance kick in flying into the sun (it was an early one (2017)) but firmware updates fixed it and now it's never an issue.
Hi Ian - Interesting results, I have had the Nano + show up an obstacle in the air but it has never stopped me flying forwards, Always interested in your thoughts and reviews though, just a quick note - at 12:19 if you scroll further down in ludicrous mode and select the option for the drone to prioritize speed rather than video for your next video I believe you will see better results :)
Hey Gavin... Thanks for that! I did wonder why I wasn't getting great speeds. Yesterday I was flying in dull sunshine with high hazy cloud. Only got a couple of false obstacle warnings, so it was better. Got for the week so plenty more testing and playing. Catch up soon, cheers, Ian
Thanks Ian for your initial experience with this drone! I have always been concerned with these small drones' ability to fly with any wind resistance in front of it. I also had the horrific experience with the Evo1 stopping cold because of the obstacle avoidance hitting the sun and I almost lost my drone! Apparently, Autel never addressed this concern! Lesson 1, turn the drone away from the sun and fly sideways or if you have time, turn off the obstacle avoidance and hull ass back home! :) Thanks again for sharing your brilliance with us! Have a great weekend in the UK!
I always turn the obstacle avoidance off when I fly above a certain height. Since no active track yet, it's basically always off for me. I own this drone. I know the mini 2 performs better in the wind, but I'm for image quality. I carefully pick the days I fly to have little or no wind and then performance is excellent. I think that's a fair tradeoff when you need to allocate more power to cameras, you give less for flying, especially in this size.
Ya i would get the mini 2 because the image quality is still good and when it comes to RUclips you don’t need the best so for me i would pick the mini 2, it’s just more reliable and the image quality is good enough
Absolutely fair points. You can see I'm torn here and what I'm trying to do is point out the good and bad; for some it's a deal breaker; for others, it's easily manageable and the camera is the priority.... Glad you're happy; cheers for the input 👍 👍
Great testing Ian, they really need to fix those obstacle avoidance issues. And I'm surprised by the lack of testing on Autel's part, the Nano has had several issues already. Thanks for sharing.
That obstacle avoidance would do my nut in, reckon I would mostly fly with it switched off. I think the Evo Lite is going to be amazing. Same wind resistance as the Lite+ combined with the camera from the Nano+, just need to wait for one with a C1 label.
Thanks for the video Ian. I have flown the nano+ around 10 times, usually sun low in the sky and have never had this issue,it looks very frustrating! Just in case you haven’t discovered yet, to get the most power from the drone you’ll need to go to control settings flight mode and choose speed priority in ludicrous mode.
It seems to me that until Autel fixes the Ob avoidance issues, and the wind issues, there are better drones out there for the same money. If I am gonna drop a grand on a new drone...I will just get a bigger one and register it. The registration process isn't that hard here in the U.S.
Isn't the OA turned off when in Ludicrous mode or is that not the case? Should have the option to override it for sure in a critical battery mode. I can't find this drone anywhere in the UK, it's still tempting because of the lack of geofencing. Gonna be a hard choice unless the Mini3 camera blows this away?
Great review honest review Ian and looking at the spec better than the Mini 2 except cost! After watching @Idaho quadcopter, Marcus Autel Evo Nano fell out of the sky while in hover! Looking forward to the new Mini 3. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
Just got this and really enjoying it, I did come from a 6 year old DJi drone though, mainly got this for the C0 category and portability and the camera quality , have encountered the obstacle avoidance issue a couple of times but I’m sure they will fix in firmware
Did you get the first version of it. I'm fairly sure you do just going by the video and the Jell-O affect or what ever it's called. I think they sorted that on the second version of it
Hey there, love your review and tests👍 Autel made some update, it seems it is a real game changer, as for flight performance but also software. It would be nice to cover that👍
I'm looking at buying a new drone and a I'm wondering if the obstacle avoidance issue has been fixed on the autel evo nano plus? after watching this video it has put me off getting the autel evo nano plus if this issue is still present. Just wondering if any firmware updates have fixed the problem.
Good advice on the battery issue. I screwed up once when flying from a riverbank with an avenue of overhanging trees and trying to get the Mini 2 back down when it was over water and only 2% battery left was very stressful. Cost is prohibitive for me at the moment despite the better camera quality plus I'm waiting on the mini 3 (where cash will probably be found for investment).
Thanks for your honest review. I’m looking to buy my first drone(sub 250g), and if your experience dealing with Autel is anything to go by, I will be avoiding that brand like the plague. Regarding the drone itself, sending out a drone with those kind of bugs is ludicrous, pardon the pun. Not a fan of the interface of the app either. Looks like it’ll be a mini 3 for me. I will keep a lookout for your review. Hope you can stay independent and impartial because sponsored reviews are not for me. Speedy recovery with the leg…
Poor little thing is afraid of its lens flare! Great that you had a chance to try it out! Do you think that rotating (yaw) would have solved the problem at the end?
Well in truth, because the critical battery had kicked in, I had convinced myself it was the wind. All I had to do was rotate it 90 ', then fly sideways..... Hindsight always easy! :) Cheers Don.
Thanks Ian, this has made my mind up about the little Nano, its defiantly now completely off my radar. Camera looks stunning, but if you can't fly it, "chocolate fire guard"
Hi Ian! ;) - That's what I call a surprise delivery! Yes, it's the issues of the Nano we should be aware of - and if obstacle avoidance kicking in for no reason is an old acquaintance, we shouldn't bet on Autel getting a grip on this. About ludicrous mode - there's a second setting, Speed/Video priority. If left von Video priority, the speed gets further limited. Give this a try. I've got a Mini 2 - and I just love the way that tiny nimble guy handles flying even in strong wind. But I am absolutely dissatisfied with it's camera - spoiled by Leica/Huawei and Fujifilm. ;) Some weeks ago, I got RAW footage captured by Nano + and DJI Mavic 3 to compare. After that, I instantly ordered a Nano +, well knowing about that speed and obstacle avoiding issues. I don't wish to go with larger drones as I am in Germany. In Germany, you could make a fortune with signs saying "EACH AND EVERYTHING STRICTLY PROHIBITED!" So drones exceeding the 250 g line are just too limited for private purposes. Thus the Nano will be the one for nice visuals, the Mini 2(/3) a trusty workhorse. ;) (Let's just hope the Mini 3 leaks don't turn out to be true.) By the way: What's that place you are? Just beautiful!
Thanks for those points. I will try that setting; interesting you rate it over the Mavic 3. Fully understand the issues you have with rules and regs in Germany :) Let's see what the Mini 3 brings. I'm in north Essex :)
@@IaninLondon - Looks like northern Essex is a place to visit. I've frequently been working for a well-known ferry company for years - maybe one day they'll come up with some free tickets. I already wrote travel guides about Essex, but never been there. :D Regarding RAW footage of Nano Plus/Mavic 3: I did a blind test, took RAW stills of the same subject, developed them and did some sensitive post-processing, then asked some guys to guess which was which. They all voted the Nano's pictures better and guessed they were taken with the Mavic 3. That's a subjective approach, of course. Technically, I regard both cameras to be more or less on par - with the Mavic 3 delivering a bit more detail resolution, but also more noise (did not get night footage, yet) and chromatic aberration, while the Nano showed strong vignetting and picture distortion towards the picture corners - issues we can get rid of manually or with a proper lens profile, except the noise. IF Autel manages to combine present pixel binning with the native sensor resolution of 50 MP for added details, they could nail the Mavic 3 to the wall. But I doubt they'll do. ;) Regarding JPGs, cameras are also on par, but I don't like the sharpening of the Nano (resulting in "sharpness worms", typical for using a sharpening algorithm not specifically suited for non-Bayer sensors) too much. So I'd go for RAWs whenever possible and laziness allows. But all in all, the Nano's footage just looks a bit better and more punchy out of the box. Plus weight and price of the Mavic 3 - decision made easy. ;)
Thanks for another very informative video. I got my first done recently and you're my 'go to' channel for training, info etc. Post production take me ages! What do you use to create your brill RUclips videos?
I tried Premier Pro on Windows but its frustratingly bad so I gave up. Constant crashes and 'media pending'. I wonder how anyone uses Adobe on Windows. Nothing like a good rant to make me smile 🙂.
Better have a beer Ian. Like you, I so much want it be a great drone. I've had 5 mini 2's returned to dji, so even they are not bullet proof. Love the vids you put out 👍
Interesting video Ian, I agree it would be great if dji had some competition and as it has been said a great camera is fantastic but you have to be sure when you fly your drone will come back to you . Having to remember to keep switch off the obstacle avoidance would be a pain as just one thing you have to do when out flying,
I don't think Autel will concern itself with fixing the obstacle avoidance! After 4 years, I would say forget it! If you buy the drone, keep it close to you or you will lose it!
I noticed that at the end, it showed up as being in Ludicrous mode, but obstacle avoidance was still engaged (your issue). I thought that you could not have obstacle avoidance engaged when in Ludicrous mode? Two problems maybe?
Hello Ian, did you updated the drone with the latest firmware? Maybe there is something wrong with the Nano+ they send you? You have seen my flights sofar, all perfect! The Autel Nano+ has a awesome camera and flights are comparable with my Mini 2. I even flew it in strong winds as you can see in my latest two video’s. I also had no problem with my obstacle avoidance whatsoever. Hope you can solve the problems. Greetings from 🇳🇱
I was told it had been updated this week to the latest firmware but I'll double check tomorrow. But this OA issue is precisely what happened on the Evo 2 pro; and already this is very definitely not comparable with the Mini 2 at all..... Will be doing more flights over the weekend. Anyway, good to get some positive words on this! :)
@@IaninLondon, hope this will be solved for you soon. Maybe the Mini 2 has a little better wind resistance in the end, but I can honestly say that in my flights sofar I think there comparable or at least close to that! See also my latest video I posted last Friday on my YT channel using the HDR Mode. I was very positive surprised by that result also! 🇳🇱
Hey Ian, Pat here from Toronto. I think you were very lucky that you were over the house and not 500ft out over the field. Could you, in a case like that, fly backward or sideways to get home. Great video…..keep tellin’ it like it is!!
Thanks Pat. The best approach here was obviously to turn off the OA; then it would have flow fine. My point is that by pushing the battery, you can get distracted and miss the obvious. Walking 500 ft over the field, on crutches? Wouldn't have been good :)
@@IaninLondon You are so right. It seems the obvious is far from mind when the human semi panic mode sets in. I’m soooo glad you weren’t over a volcano at the time?!?!
I wrote this comment on another site, and I will repeat it here. That Nano+ drone is a fail. I was rooting for Autel to give DJI some competition, but they have not risen to the occasion. I would not spend my money on their drones.
Yes, it's on V1.2.14 which it states is latest firmware. I take a screen shot in the video I filmed yesterday and will be uploading today or tomorrow, so everyone can see the firmware it's on. 👍👍
It appeared that the obstacle avoidance did kick in for a reason. If you listen you can clearly hear a duck, “quacking” very nearby. So I suggest the bird was flying very close and it was that which triggered the avoidance notification!? But the other avoidance notifications were probably a sensor or a software glitch. Pity!
The sound of the ducks was recoded by my collar mic. :) There were literally dozens and dozens of false alerts and always when the drone was pointing towards or away from the sun. :)
Hi Ian, great video as always, thank you. I've had the same problem with my Air 2S though on two occasions. When pointing towards a low sun it just stops and refuses to move forwards. I only had just over three hours flying on it when I first encountered the problem and it was quite worrying as I didn't know why it was happening. The second time I had more experience with the drone (around five hours flying time) but it was a bit more critical as I was flying it back to a very small forest clearing on a steep hillside and it just wouldn't come back to me. Fortunately I remembered the first occurance, just turned it around and came home backwards with no problem. I fly with Litchi which doesn't give such a good visual indication that the collision avodance is operating as Fly, but I think it's exactly the same problem as you had with the Nano.
Yes, I am doing more middle of day flying today; it's easy enough to turn off the OA; a shame it's not working in the first place tho. Can catch people out......
I had high Hope's for this drone rather than going for the Mini 3, but this worries me now. I would need to be able to fly in a breeze and the obstacle avoidance should behave better. Really not sure now
Great video 👍 Ian , I’ve still not seen anything from all these new drones that have convinced me to part with my now 4 year old mavic air , yes they are smaller, lighter with maybe better cameras? But in my opinion, they have only been trying to make something that we already had with the mavic air 🤷🏻♂️ would love to see you do a direct comparison between the now old mavic air and the new offerings available today? Keep up the great work Ian 👍
Ah, well, I still have my original Mavic Air, but I assure you, the signal strength and larger sensor and better functions on the Air2S are defo worth upgrading for...... :)
@@IaninLondon admittedly I’m not has brave as you with long distance flying 😂 so I’ve never had any issues losing the signal yet 😉 but being an amateur fear weather flyer the mavic air does everything i need and I still enjoy flying it 👍 but maybe one day i will retire it.
@@IaninLondon that's perfect design ...if it worked correctly. Autel need to concentrate resources into sorting this firmware, the camera alone deserves attention, so much potential for massive returns in sales
This is why I never....unless flying in super tight quarters or unless one is very new to flying drones...engage CA sensors as they do nothing but cause flight interference on any make of a drone. I have personally found over the years they also promote lazy flying habits by encouraging lack of awareness..or lack of feeling the need to be as aware as one should be when flying an unmanned AC of ANY size or weight. Know your airframe (prob most importantly its limitations)...know your surroundings (pre flight site survey if a new site)...and never rely on sensor nannies to bail you out of an initially controllable situation. Just one persons opinion though 😬 ( One final small opine..I'd probably go with the Evo lite + rather than any of the Nanos. Once used to a 1" sensor, it's really hard to gain satisfaction in imagery output from anything smaller 👍) Cheers Ian! Much more straightforward reviews than any of the talking hedz on this side of the pond 💯
I noticed you had satellite count on your OSD, why don't I have that . do you know what version you are running? That is weird because I don't have any speed issues with mine anymore but I just don't use obstacle avoidance. the camera in my opinion and others is on par or better than the Mavic three
@@IaninLondon Are you running android. ? I am slowly finding out that I think it is only android users that get the satellite count with a picture of a satellite
I have always wanted an Autel just for the camera's, but that's all! I want a Mini 2 with a waypiont Geofence and an Autel camera. You can forget Obstacle avoidance. PS. Ron has just lost his one in the sea, it just packed in.
There is a very simple solution to this OA issue. I turn off the OA once I'm airborne & above all obstacles. There are zero issues flying this drone once this is performed. The problem only occurs sometimes when the sun is low, so I believe this issue is being overstated in this video.
Fair enough. Or, even better, have the OA work properly. Turning off a feature because it doesn't work properly isn't a great solution. If DJI can make good OA in low sun, so could Autel....
Can you simply turn the obstacle avoidance off? I've never relied on obstacle avoidance for any drone so I wouldn't miss it. By the way, I just can't get over how absolutely amazing the location of your home is, it's a dream spot my friend!! If you ever need a house sitter we will fly from Canada!!
It's kind of a shame, really, that a flying camera -- with such an amazing image quality -- can't fly very well. I'm hoping the Mini 3 matches the Autel Nano+ in image quality, along with DJI's reliable flying capabilities. Great video! Thanks.
Great review but too flakey still for me to take the plunge. If the Mini3 works better out if the box (ie not Mavic3 experiences), this Autel will be consigned to the ‘Sale’ shelf.
I guess if its flying capabilities are not great it could take some pressure off DJI. It will be interesting to see if / how their telegraphed schedule reacts.
Pretty decent flight. I always turn off the OA if I’m flying above obstacles because of this issue with invisible obstacles in the sky. It clearly struggles at higher altitudes with moderate winds and thats where DJI is going to win with their Mini 3 I believe(maybe) Autel needs to give this little one some real TLC before it ends up in an orphanage. 😄
@Drone Syndrome, Maybe DJI will win in higher winds in windresistance, but for the camera the Autel Nano+ even beats the Mavic 3😀 The camera of this little drone is awesome👏. The reason I bought it! I even managed to fly it in strong winds. Take a look at my YT channel and watch my latest 2 video's. Maybe I will even buy the DJI Mini 3 pro as second drone and sell my Mini 2 or I will buy the Air 2S instead. Greetings from 🇳🇱
This is really concerning. Like you said, the obstacle avoidance issue has been going so long. My guess is they cannot solve the issue or they would of done it by now. Looking forward to your next video to see how well it does in the wind. May I suggest doing a comparison with the mini 2 in this respect.
I received my new Evo Nano yesterday, downloaded the Fly app. Went to start everything up and the Fly app keeps telling me 'RC Disconnected'. I've tried a couple of cables, no change. I use a Galaxy Note 9. I tried with an iphine 13 Pro but I had exactly the same problem. Finally I tried with my opad Pro (2020). I had the same problem with your cables but I tried with another one and I succeed to activate the drone. Except that, I wasn't able to update the drone, I didn't have access to drone, I couldn't take photo or videos (I had an sd card inside). I was only able to move the gimbal. Nothing else. I couldn't pair the controller and I couldn't update the drone manually through the app. Nothing is working!! Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you in advance
This happened to me a lot. The remote is really fussy about the cable connection. Make sure it's firmly in all the way. The trouble is the cable connection..... 👍🏻
@@IaninLondon thank you so much for your reply!! I tried with multiple cables but nothings worked except ipad. But I hadn't access at all. I'll try again. Thanks for your help!!
I am also very disappointed in the obstacle avoidance on this drone. I have had to redo several videos due to the drone suddenly stopping because the sun was at the wrong angle (or I stopped the drone to look for the obstacle that doesn't exist). In addition to this, the obstacle avoidance has failed to actually avoid real obstacles. Just today I was flying the drone down a creek with small tree limbs hanging on both sides and the drone went straight into a branch. Obviously still my fault as I should have seen it, but I was quite a distance away and I was watching the drone itself rather than the video feed. At first, I figured I just winged the branch which would explain why the avoidance didn't catch it, but after review of the video, it clearly went straight into the branch. Fortunately, the drone was stable enough to fly back home so I guess that is a positive, although since the props on this drone are very fragile so I need to order a couple more.
The first time the obstacle avoidance kicked on in the air, we could hear ducks passing by, so I thought this was why haha. But then it repeated the annoying bug. It should be called "Obstacle Annoyance" instead. Definitely not buying this thing. Thanks Ian for this test! Waiting for the Mini 3 now ;)
Big thanks to @EdinburghDroneCompany for throwing a Nano + to play with for the week.
Excellent testing flight review, Ian. Thanks for flying it with us. Given its steep price obviously, Autel has some more tuning work to do.

Hi Ian this is my case, i repoted to Autel
On Friday, March 18, I received my Autel Nano+ Serial xxxx, purchased at Autelpilot, that's the day I charged the batteries and the control, connecting the control with the Readmi Note 9S cell phone, and installed its AutelSky application, when I connected the Nano+ it asked me to do the firmware update, which went smoothly, I did the same for each battery and Autel Skype didn't ask me to do any more updates. 1. Auto take off doesn't work, nano+ turns on motors but won't take off
4. The autofocus is not working, I have videos that are really worthless
5. The crooked horizon
The are some way to reinstall the firmware to Nano+, since this problem was when it asked me to do the second firmware update.
My name is Herman Frias, I live in Caracas, Venezuela, and I own a Dji Mavic Mini, which replace my old mini with the best drone on the market and so far I can't say that.
Greetings and thanks for your attention
Good morning, Last week i did the firmware update 1.2.14 and the app 1.2.17, and the same problems continue, additionally:
1. When I turn on the Nano it tells me that there is a new update, I do it
2.Remote Control version stays in red V1.0.4.2
3. The gimbal stays at 99% when I auto-calibrate
Two weeks have passed since my first complaint and I have not received a response. If I don't have a response soon, I will make my claim with PayPal for the return of my money.
It is not safe to fly this drone with all these problems
That's pretty rough. I think it's clear it's better with the obstacle avoidance off in most cases.... Hope you get things sorted.... Cheers, Ian
It's such a shame they just cannot get this right....
Thanks Ian, honest and great review! Thanks for your thoughts and we look forward to seeing more.
Cheers.
Thanks for the good words George. Glad you're enjoying the Mini 2; brilliant drone. Cheers, Ian
It does seem that Autel has still not resolved the obstetrical avoidance issue which will keep me in the DJI drone where I don't have these issues. I really wish Autel would be a competitor to DJI, but it won't with these kinds of issues. That's unfortunate.
Thank you for the update. Cheers.
Saw Idaho Quadcopter just lost his in the drink a few days ago while in FL. Recall him having OA issues as well.
I watched that it was hoovering then just flipped into the water. Crazy
Thanks for this review. I know what "not" to buy now. :)
Great stuff. Glad you're happy with it...... I need to try some evening shots with it too.... :)
@@IaninLondon You won't be disappointed :) If you grade the footage yourself it's just amazing.
Thinking of buying this. Could you tell me what the battery flight time is in reality?
Absolutely nothing worse than being drip-fed delays...... :(
Excellent Video and Excellent Advice Ian. I'm Looking Forward To Your Next Flight To See What The Nano Plus Will Do During The Day. Thank You.
Cheers Doug. Yep, not much wind today but plenty of sun so I'll be checking it out early afternoon....
Thanks Ian for the review I was going to purchase the Autel Nano Plus but I’ll wait now for the Mini 3 to show.
Not a rush out and buy job by any means, For Autel its a drone thats way from finished! Superb video as always Ian, nice one!
Cheers fella. Yep, that's about right. Cheers again for your support 🤠👍🏻👍🏻
Great test Ian! Always full of excellent information!
Thank you for this advice. Is that procedure in any documentation?
This pretty much summed up my experience with the nano+. Obs avoidance was disabled as it crippled the already poor flight ability compared to the mini2. As stated before, sent back as no confidence flying in any wind. No point having a better camera if you lose the footage due to non return. Shame really ... bring on the mini3.
I can see me keeping it switched off... Which is pretty useless..... 😖
My feelings exacty
I've not had this problem. Are you guys getting a bad batch in the Isles?
@@togeika its the sun that's fuckin it up....battery can't power in high winds

@@IaninLondon I think this will be the last one I lose and crash as I created a new setup in the jeep lol
Thank Ian, another great first flight demo. I'll stick with my mini 2 for now.
Cheers Colin
That obstacle avoidance would do my nut in, reckon I would mostly fly with it switched off.
I think the Evo Lite is going to be amazing.
Same wind resistance as the Lite+ combined with the camera from the Nano+, just need to wait for one with a C1 label.
C Labeling is on hold, probably four an indefinite time according to the CAA last week, spend that money, I just have, that's a set I have now...
Thanks for sharing your review for Autel Evo Nano +. Like 👍& Subscribed.
Okay; good to know. Today in high cloud with no sun, it was much better.....
Ian, great review.
I was thinking about adding one of these to my kit, but will not now.
It seems to me that until Autel fixes the Ob avoidance issues, and the wind issues, there are better drones out there for the same money. If I am gonna drop a grand on a new drone...I will just get a bigger one and register it. The registration process isn't that hard here in the U.S.
Lovin' the videos Ian!
Yes, stock is low to non existent in UK. Ludicrous mode allows OA unless you switch it off.
@@IaninLondon good to know thanks, I imagine the M3 won't get to the UK until the end of May?
Actually I'm thinking 21 or 28 April... (launch that is.... as for when we get stock? well......)
@@IaninLondon might be sooner than the Nano then 🙄
Great review honest review Ian and looking at the spec better than the Mini 2 except cost! After watching @Idaho quadcopter, Marcus Autel Evo Nano fell out of the sky while in hover! Looking forward to the new Mini 3. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
Yes, I saw that! Poor lad....
I think they sorted that on the second version of it
Ross At Edinburgh drones is a great guy did me a good deal on a 2S . Waiting for mini 3 now
Good first impressions video Ian.
Thanks 👍
Hey there, love your review and tests👍
Autel made some update, it seems it is a real game changer, as for flight performance but also software.
It would be nice to cover that👍
Thanks for that! I got the update a month ago.... If it's another note recent update, then I'm stuck. I don't have the little Nano any more..... 🫤🫤
Was it on the latest firmware?
Please can you provide precise weights for 1) the empty drone, 2) the battery, 3) the controller?
Thanks for your honest review. I’m looking to buy my first drone(sub 250g), and if your experience dealing with Autel is anything to go by, I will be avoiding that brand like the plague. Regarding the drone itself, sending out a drone with those kind of bugs is ludicrous, pardon the pun. Not a fan of the interface of the app either. Looks like it’ll be a mini 3 for me. I will keep a lookout for your review. Hope you can stay independent and impartial because sponsored reviews are not for me. Speedy recovery with the leg…
I'll be buying my mini 3 🤠👍🏻
Poor little thing is afraid of its lens flare! Great that you had a chance to try it out! Do you think that rotating (yaw) would have solved the problem at the end?
Well in truth, because the critical battery had kicked in, I had convinced myself it was the wind. All I had to do was rotate it 90 ', then fly sideways..... Hindsight always easy! :) Cheers Don.
I'll wait for the next dji mini 3 and love my Air 2s
Thanks Ian, this has made my mind up about the little Nano, its defiantly now completely off my radar. Camera looks stunning, but if you can't fly it, "chocolate fire guard"
Yep 👍🏻
Same experience here. Returned it. Too many small issues that made me lose confidence in keeping it!
Hi Ian! ;) - That's what I call a surprise delivery!
But I am absolutely dissatisfied with it's camera - spoiled by Leica/Huawei and Fujifilm. ;)
Some weeks ago, I got RAW footage captured by Nano + and DJI Mavic 3 to compare.
Thus the Nano will be the one for nice visuals, the Mini 2(/3) a trusty workhorse. ;)
(Let's just hope the Mini 3 leaks don't turn out to be true.)
By the way: What's that place you are? Just beautiful!
Thanks for those points. I will try that setting; interesting you rate it over the Mavic 3. Fully understand the issues you have with rules and regs in Germany :) Let's see what the Mini 3 brings. I'm in north Essex :)
@@IaninLondon - Looks like northern Essex is a place to visit. I've frequently been working for a well-known ferry company for years - maybe one day they'll come up with some free tickets. I already wrote travel guides about Essex, but never been there. :D
Regarding RAW footage of Nano Plus/Mavic 3: I did a blind test, took RAW stills of the same subject, developed them and did some sensitive post-processing, then asked some guys to guess which was which.
But I doubt they'll do. ;)
Regarding JPGs, cameras are also on par, but I don't like the sharpening of the Nano (resulting in "sharpness worms", typical for using a sharpening algorithm not specifically suited for non-Bayer sensors) too much. So I'd go for RAWs whenever possible and laziness allows.
But all in all, the Nano's footage just looks a bit better and more punchy out of the box. Plus weight and price of the Mavic 3 - decision made easy. ;)
I had low sun triggering OA on my Phantom4 back in 2017. Haven't enabled OA on any of my drones since.
Maybe they've moved on a bit since then? ;)
Thanks for another very informative video. I got my first done recently and you're my 'go to' channel for training, info etc. Post production take me ages! What do you use to create your brill RUclips videos?
I use Premiere Pro. It takes me ages too! Usually 3 - 8 hours editing for a 5 - 15 min video....
Love the vids you put out 👍
Cheers fella. 5 back? Unlucky...!
bs.
Interesting video Ian, I agree it would be great if dji had some competition and as it has been said a great camera is fantastic but you have to be sure when you fly your drone will come back to you . Having to remember to keep switch off the obstacle avoidance would be a pain as just one thing you have to do when out flying,
Thanks Karen. Yep, it's easy to turn off the OA but we shouldn't have to..... Let's see how this week's testing goes... 👍
No thanks Ian, I'll wait for the Mini 3!... Very informative though, thanks to you & Edinburgh Drones for the heads up.
My only attraction to this drone is the colour and no geo fencing. I suppose given time they might sort out the issues
Of the obstacle avoidance
And the sensor looks amazing
I don't think Autel will concern itself with fixing the obstacle avoidance! After 4 years, I would say forget it! If you buy the drone, keep it close to you or you will lose it!
Thank you!
Ian I am finding the same thing it just won't fly into the sun it treats it as an obsticle
Fair assessment.
I noticed that at the end, it showed up as being in Ludicrous mode, but obstacle avoidance was still engaged (your issue). I thought that you could not have obstacle avoidance engaged when in Ludicrous mode? Two problems maybe?
Nope; for over the last year with EVOs, the OA stays on in Ludicrous mode but as the message says, it may not function over a certain speed.... 👍👍
@@IaninLondonThanks for the clarification. I thought it was all or nothing.
Hey Ian, have you updated the firmware at all? I know, Autel has released a few updates recently to address some of the issues.
Yes. It's on the very latest. I show it in tonight's video. None of these issues are addressed....👍🏻
Thanks for the update!!!
I also have not had any of these issues with my nano.
@Gekol Drone Videos Well, I have a week of flying ahead..... :)
I wish they would cover the type-C and SD card slot
Really useful review Ian. Just one question - is it running the latest firmware? I think the question has already been asked but can’t see a response.
Hello Ian. Nice video. I guess you are glad that you cancelled your order. Let's hope the Mini 3 is not a disappointment. Cheers.
I had high Hope's for this drone rather than going for the Mini 3, but this worries me now. I would need to be able to fly in a breeze and the obstacle avoidance should behave better. Really not sure now
Ian's a top reviewer and a very experienced drone pilot, if this hasn't been your mind up I'm not sure what will.
Hi Ian if I was you I would wait to get the Dji mini 3 great video though mate
So frustrating 😖
Why was the obs. avoidance kicking in during Ludicrous mode??
Because it wasn't travelling at top speed.... It's there unless the pitch is too steep...
@@IaninLondon that's perfect design
...if it worked correctly.
Good points. Personally I have it switched off usually too. But of course I want to show its limitations to the wider public.....👍🏻👍🏻
Current drone is a Parrot Anafi which doesn’t have OA sensors so wouldn’t be an issue. Seems like that is the only deal breaker.
I noticed you had satellite count on your OSD, why don't I have that . do you know what version you are running? That is weird because I don't have any speed issues with mine anymore but I just don't use obstacle avoidance. the camera in my opinion and others is on par or better than the Mavic three
I'm unsure. I checked today; there's no option to enable or disable it.... It's just there...

I have always wanted an Autel just for the camera's, but that's all! I want a Mini 2 with a waypiont Geofence and an Autel camera. You can forget Obstacle avoidance. PS. Ron has just lost his one in the sea, it just packed in.
Yeah, saw his disappear.... mad....
Same i was thinking on buying this drone can you do a test with the Obs avoidance switched off ts not a thing i use
If OA is off, it flies way better.... :)
@@IaninLondon I agree it should work properly, I’m simply providing a quick solution in the interim
Oh in truth, I rarely use OA. This is about testing for people to be aware of things..... Cheers :)
Yes, turning the OA off is an option... but the OA was a major selling point! :) Ta for the good words on the pad. It's a fair bit of work tho ;)
Is there a way to turn off the obstacle avoidance so it doesn’t keep jumping in erroneously?
Yes, you can switch it off....
Was this with the most recent firmware?
Yes. Check my video uploading tonight. I show the firmware 👍🏻👍🏻
I want pressure on DJI :) It ensures good development and pricing :)
Yep; ultimately as long as people know its limitations, they can make an informed decision.....
Greetings from 🇳🇱
this is why dji is a number one drone company in the world
Just bought the nano+ for around $500. It’s worth a try for me. 😀
This is really concerning. Like you said, the obstacle avoidance issue has been going so long. My guess is they cannot solve the issue or they would of done it by now. Looking forward to your next video to see how well it does in the wind. May I suggest doing a comparison with the mini 2 in this respect.
I kind of already know the answer with a comparison with the mini 2.... 😉
Really a comparison with the air 2 makes more sense
@@Matanumi Already been done, in terms of video quality its no contest, the Nano+ is significantly better.

Lucky. Drone + Stream + Overhanging branches aren't a good mix.... ;)
Freaking sweet! I want a drone you cant fly during golden hours
Yap i think im going to buy the Mini 3 pro . for me its a no brainer
The first time the obstacle avoidance kicked on in the air, we could hear ducks passing by, so I thought this was why haha. But then it repeated the annoying bug. It should be called "Obstacle Annoyance" instead. Definitely not buying this thing. Thanks Ian for this test! Waiting for the Mini 3 now ;)
Aren't we all..... :)
Mine is perfect. Never had a problem
