Homeless encampments in DC grow, neighbors and businesses call out government's responsibility

  • The District saw a 40% spike in the number of homeless encampments across the city during the pandemic, but only a 5% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness. That’s because some unsheltered residents set up multiple tents as the city relaxed its enforcement of laws banning encampments during COVID, according to Wayne Turnage, deputy mayor for the District of Columbia Health and Human Services.
“As long as there are people living on the street, you have to conclude that, you know, we need to do more,” Turnage said.
William Everett has been living in a tent in McPherson Square for the past 10 months, which he says is better than sleeping in a shelter.
“There’s too much going on," Everett said of why he doesn't like shelters. "They come to check certain things. They check if you got a knife, gun, bottle of liquor, but they don’t drug test.”

I was homeless for 4 years. As a DC Resident with health conditions. They would house a criminal before they house and care for vulnerable populations.

We will never reduce street homelessness and crime without reducing the amount of fentanyl drug available on our streets. It is everywhere and dirt cheap. Fentanyl destroy humans mentally and physically beyond the point of repair very quickly. Street homeless are fentanyl addicts, and street encampments are open air drugs markets brewing all sorts of crime. They gradually destroy everything around themselves. many will die from overdose, or drugs related violence that's fueling our skyrocketing homicides rate

Homelessness is not a people problem, it is a policy problem. Corporate greed, lack of affordable housing, lack of available units, landlords that price out fixed income or low income households. If this continues, rent controls really need to be put in place.

Amongst plenty other reasons..This was one of the reasons I left the democratic party. I was born in DC and live 20 minutes outside of the city. I took a trip back to VA beach back in April with the family. My son and I caught an uber to Union station(first time I’ve been there in a while). I didn’t really pay attention to the outside area when we where going on our trip. But when got back as we where waiting for our uber is when I realized just how uncivilized it looked from the outside. It looked like bunch of lost campers that where living off the land for survival. One the best views of the monument and the capital overshadowed by one of the worst views of humanitarian. The most disgusting part about it all was how normally ignored everyone seem to be about it.

Decades of assistance has turned the tide. So many people no believe someone else is supposed to take care of their basic needs. The Navajo Nation has a Department of Self Reliance: "Customers are required to comply with program requirements including: developing a Personal Responsibility Plan (PRP) that reflects their personal goals to achieve self-reliance; and complying with established Work Participation requirements (if applicable)."

You live in DC go talk to the president yourself in the right way. With kindness. Instead of Complaining to everyone else. People in Congress are not looking at this stuff they don't want to pay attention to it. Bring the attention to them. They are letting it happen.

NOthing every happens. It only gets worse. The policies are ridiculous. Dont forget it's the taxpayer thhat pays the rents of these homeless, who won't be able to keep a job due to drug addiction. Maybe the homeless should be the ones to make their own life work instead of gov't intervention.
