  • Head phones on for this one! Really cool to be right next to the engine and
hear the beautiful harmonious sounds of the engine ramping up and down.
Will also show you the electrical cards that are the "electrical controlling stations"
on the locomotive's power control system. These cards are neat to see
and probably something no one has ever saw before, unless you would
be a loco mechanic or electrician.
Train is at the prep plant loading the cars with coal, here at Cumberland Mine
prep plant located near Kirby Pa. #22 locomotive has just had some serious
engine work done to it by and our contract mechanics and she sounds
    great!
Listen to the sounds of our SD 40-2 as it is loading the cars and compare the differences.
The SD40-2 is turbo charged and the SD 38-2 is not:

I worked on a couple of tug boats on St. Thomas usvi. One boat had a single EMD running a quart nozzle with an 11 foot prop. 2100 hp. The other had two EMDs 2400hp each. Sometimes I would just stand between those big EMDs and watch the drive shafts as the tug was maneuvering a ship or barge. The power and sound was just magical. Especially when they would go from idle to full power and back to idle in about a minute. The whole tug would shudder. Really miss those old tugs.

Fifty plus years ago, just after Burlington Northern was formed, I worked as a brakeman out of Balmer Yard in Seattle. There were still a lot of EMD F-units in service at that time, along with a whole assortment of newer units as well. How fondly I remember that unique, complex "whine" they made, and I vividly recall the differences in tone as the units unloaded to make the circuit transitions. US steel was very exclusive with their rails so foriegn power was rare. One of the afternoon/ evening locals, probably Griffith, used to hold the main and park light power right by the crossing and take beans at the local pizza joint. The sound was so amazing. @@ccrx6700 there were other Springfield Illinois railroads that had 2nd generation EMD SD units, Illinois Central had SD-40s(dash 2s as well), and one group had extended range fuel tanks that enabled them to go from Chicago to New Orleans without stopping to refuel, only for crew changes. I.C. also had one (only) SD-45. Illinois Terminal had 6 SD-39s, (the turbo version of the SD-38s). Norfolk and Western had oodles of SD-40s and SD45s, all with the high short hood, and they were configured to run long hood forward, (steam engine style), for collision protection. And lastly, the GM&O had their share of SD-40s, with their #950 being the prototype of all those legions of SD units that followed, and its now residing at the Monticello Railway Museum (Illinois), in servicable condition! I didnt include the B&O RR, because their sketchy track wasnt able to support the weight of any SD unit, let alone the F units and GPs. All those roads i mentioned eventually had their shares of dash-2 units, and the only ones left are now under different ownership, while the B&O and IT have been turned into their former roadbeds/bike 'n' hike trails. Thanks Dave! that was an awesome sound! Reminded me of my youth in our tree fort near the train tracks, where we could hear the train working the nearby siding. Awesome memory 😊

I used to love going to where my Dad worked listening to the diesel engines working. My favorite was the F-7 / F-9 locomotives.

Since General Motors owned EMC, later EMD from around 1930 until early 2005 and, that locomotive was built in 1978, I'd be tempted to call the sounds it makes the ULTIMATE in Chevy Thunder!
