What Happened to the Titanic's Sister Ships

  • The trio of ships saw journeys of triumph and tragedy. Everyone knows the story of the Titanic, but not many people know that the Titanic had 2 sister ships.
Bad luck seemed to follow the trio of ships, but each one of them had glorious moments that live in the minds of those who sailed in them. White Star Line, the company who built the Titanic, had high hopes for what the “unsinkable ship” and its sister ships, the Britannic and the Olympic, would accomplish.

Amazing images that bring back to life Titanic in Colour: Photos of One of the Largest Passenger Liners of Its Time Rendered in Full Colour The RMS Titanic was one of the most opulent liners to have ever been built and the largest steamship in the world. It struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City and sank on April 15, 1912. Since the discovery of its wreckage in 1985, interest in the ill-fated liner slightly dwindled. Now a century after its sinking, the Titanic remains an enduring and enigmatic subject. Thomas Schmid of 3D history, is one such person that has been mesmerized by the tale of this fabled ship that was once pronounced unsinkable. Through his work, we are able to travel back in time to see images of the luxury liner, not as they were taken, but rendered in full colour. Photo shows: RMS Olympic and Titanic side-by-side, Belfast, 6 March 1912: By Thomas Schmid/Exclusivepix Media/EAST NEWS, www.eastnews.ru/pictures/pict...

    SUMMARY:
    - The Olympic was the first of the trio to set sail on June 11, 1911, heading toward New York. The sheer size of it would wow the crowds. The Olympic’s maiden voyage went without incident, and a crowd of 8,000 people in New York got to explore its luxurious accommodations while it was docked there.
    - At some point during the early hours of April 15, 1912, the crew of the Olympic decided they wouldn’t make it in time and halted their course. The survivors of the Titanic were eventually rescued by the Carpathia.
    - The Olympic was set up with lifeboats for all crew and passengers after the Titanic sank. It went from having 20 lifeboats to 64. Changes were also made to the watertight bulkheads, and an extra hull was installed to construct a type of double hull.
    - For several years, the Olympic was used in the war effort against Germany. Throughout the years, she carried over 200,000 passengers, including thousands of Americans fleeing from Europe and troops battling during World War I.
    - The ship crashed with the Nantucket lightship, and the crash signaled the beginning of the end. Beaten up and after years of service, the Olympic was demolished and scrapped for parts.
    - Although the Britannic was the youngest of the trio of ships, having been constructed last, it was also the biggest. They intended to name it “Gigantic.” However, after the Titanic’s disaster, they changed the name to the Britannic since they considered it to be a lucky name.
    - Just a year after it was turned into a hospital ship, the Britannic was making its way through the Aegean Sea to pick up wounded soldiers when it was struck by a loud explosion.
    - Unlike the Titanic’s large death toll, only 30 people perished in the sinking of the Britannic - over 1,000 survived. So many people survived because the accident happened in the morning when the temperature of the water was warmer.
    - The bad luck that followed the Titanic and the Britannic and the accidents and demise of the Olympic were remarkable, but what was most impressive is that there was a woman who sailed on all 3 ships and survived. Violet Jessop was a crew member and nurse aboard the ships.

Brittanic is Titanic's forgotten sister. She served as a hospital ship in WWI. She took less than an hour to sink after hitting an underwater mine. But since the watertight door was jammed opened and portholes left open, that allowed water to come in and sink Brittanic. After Titanic sank, construction was halted on Brittanic to make safety improvements which sadly didn't save her from sinking

Just so everyone knows, the Olympic actually stopped heading for the Titanic’s position once she was at least 100 miles away, and at that time the Carpathia had declined their request to take on survivors because Captain Arthur Rostron and Bruce Ismay feared that the Olympic would traumatize survivors even more as she looked identical to the Titanic in almost every way. It wasn’t just cause they decided they were too far away and too late.

It's also a stupendous idea for such a thing to be done as White Star Line's only major disaster was that of the sinking of the RMS Atlantic which occurred in the late 1800's and by then White Star Line was still doing excellent business. The Britannic only sank for the simple fact that when it hit the underwater mine that it bent the ships superstructure, and the watertight bulkheads weren’t able to close, and the captain wasn’t able to operate the rudder due to this either. If it didn’t bend the superstructure, odds are the ship would’ve been fine and continued service until it was scrapped alongside the Olympic.

There are tons of inaccuracies with this video. Britannic's sinking time, Olympic's updating (the ship shown as he talks of the updates to Olympic after the Titanic Disaster) as well as Britannic's early career (She never did complete a *commercial* voyage for the White Star Line) and etc.
