Dame what are you doing? What kind of defense is this? And on this possession, Giannis gives up the switch way too easily, putting Lillard on Turner. And look, Miles just walks his way to the paint and nobody on the Bucks says anything on the potential threat. He gets it inside for some easy 2 points.
And as you see Malik Beasley here struggling against the big man, let me explain why part of this is just bad defense and lack of effort by the Bucks, but more importantly why I believe that Milwaukee just can’t match up with Indiana, and in a potential playoff matchup, I have the Pacers beating the Bucks.
A bit of a shocker I know. But to me, it’s shocking how easy it is for Indiana to penetrate Milwaukee’s defense. Tyrese smokes Beasley here on the first step before collapsing the defense and kicking it out to Jalen Smith who’s 53% from downtown this season. So Lopez storms at him, Smith just blows by inside the empty paint and stuffs it
Again, Haliburton leaves his defender in the dust getting to the paint and this time he floats it up.
And as he turns on the jets here, Lopez sees that he’ll need to step in here, which sets up the kickout, and from there the Bucks are scrambling to close out on the shooters. Great ball movement by the Pacers finding Buddy Hield for an open three and he knocks it down.
We saw the floater and the kickout and this is a layup by Nesmith off of his own dribble penetration.
So you see how Milwaukee just seems a step slower, like they can’t catch up to the Pacers.
The Bucks then had to try a zone as you can see on this possession but Indiana moves the ball inside, and Mathurin floats it in.
Actually, the Bucks were in a zone 5 times in this game, and Indiana scored every single time.
They even got flashy with it.
The no look pass from Haliburton to really rub it in.
But that wasn’t the only no looker.
As bad as this looks, just 2 days before this game, these 2 teams played in Milwaukee and it got even worse for the Bucks.
That’s because they made T.J. look like M.J. Mcconnel scored 12 points in the fourth quarter getting to the rim whenever he wanted. That’s how bad the defense was.
Right now the Bucks have the 9th worst defense in the league, but against a high octane, lightning quick offensive team against the Pacers all the flaws get amplified.
Which brings me to my main point of this video: These 2 teams played 5 times this year, and I watched 4 of those games.
And this will definitely surprise you but Indiana won the season series 4-1. What?!
The Bucks have only 10 losses this year and 4 of them are from the Pacers.
Which is why, I’m calling it right here and right now- if these 2 teams meet in the playoffs this is going to be an upset. I’m taking Indiana.
I could have kept quiet about it, or could have been more conservative with my prediction but then I’d be the same as all of those people saying how they “knew” that the We Believe Warriors would upset the Mavs in the playoffs because Golden State swept Dallas in the regular season.
Ahh yeah…you sure knew. I’m calling it now guys, and I’ll leave with the results.
Whatever happens tho, 1 thing is for sure. If these 2 teams meet in the playoffs, there will be a lot of sparks flying. They do not like each other and it’s not a secret.
The debacle of stealing Giannis’s ball was the most well known incident, but there is chipinnes, pushing and shoving between the 2 teams literally every single game. And last night was no exception. So, I’m just hoping I get a 7 game series out of this.
The Bucks definitely need to tighten up their defense that’s not even a question, and thankfully for me as a Knicks fan, they did just that by trading for O.G. Coaching is awful in Milwaukee like Dam's defense. If they want a 2nd ring they have to change asap their defensive approach. Yesterday's game was a masterpiece from Indiana. The hype for both team to meet during the playoff is high.

The defensive scheme has got to evolve, Griff is a defensive coach but he's just trying to force his system onto this roster which frankly isn't built for it. Offense is still just let Dame and Giannis do something and when they're out we're going to push through MIddleton (all fairness to Khris he has been playing way better)
As a dame fan, I’m having such an awful season. He’s shooting so poorly, but I also know that coach hasn’t been playing him correctly. And on the defensive end, we’re just trash.

Defense is pretty tragic from the Bucks. In the playoffs everything slows down to halfcourt offenses so it'll be interesting to see how things adjust defensively for the bucks but also how the Pacers will still be able to push their pace. Great vid!

everyone keeps saying "trading jrue for dame was a horrible decision" and it's so frustrating. i loved having jrue, and he was crucial to winning the chip in 2021, but people forget that during that playoff run he was putting up abysmally low shooting numbers. the bucks have been a defense-first team for several season leading up to this one and it's only gotten us 1 chip. i get dame has been having a string of bad shooting nights, but this guy scored 40+ points in 15 games last season. he's on a new team, it's his first time playing with another superstar, the bucks are still working out the kinks, and despite all of this they have the second best record in the east. instead of being annoying and calling the titans of the sport washed, just calm down and enjoy the game.

I think it's less Jrue specifically and more the team had some fundamental issues keeping them from getting back to a championship level that getting dame fixes some of them but not all of them and creates a few more that it's hard to tell if it's a net positive change or not.

Dame pops off in the playoffs, so this is kinda goofy. Also, they'll have crawford back most likely and do a trade to have an extra defensive piece by the end of the year. Pacers are playing great, but this is a non issue come playoffs time.

Jrue & CP3 are of same status, but have no problem guarding taller players, due to constant mismatches everybody else has to help causing wide open shoots or cuts to the hoop for dunks
It's just a bad matchup for the Bucks, having defense as your biggest struggle and going against the best offensively rated team in the league is just not going to work. There needs to be some trades or adjustments unless Dame steps it up. At the same time the Bucks are 24-10 so they still have a lot of time to work something out.

Well you are right about the weak perimeter defense. I think that it doesnt make sense to pair Dame together with Beasley both of them are undersized weak defenders. They need to replace Beasley with Pat or Marjon but Milwakee coaching stuff just doesn't care about the defense I guess.
You're right that pairing Beasley with him makes no sense. But Pat looks pretty washed compared to a couple years ago and Marjon is inconsistent. Beasley is okay because he's such a sniper but personally I'd rather see AJJ.

Basket ball is about both sides of the court. A player who score 18 or 20 pts and plays great contributing to opposing team scoring 10plus less points is more valuable than good 30pt and hardly any D as opposing tram can target and score even more.
They really messed this up at expense of keeping Giannis.

As a Pacers fan, I think we match up alright with the Bucks and 76ers. It’s just the Celtics and maybe the Magic that I don’t think we really have a chance against, but if we get good matchups, we could win the East (assuming we are able to maintain health and pace).

They wanted to pair Giannis with a superstar, Dame needed help, and vice versa. They got so thrown off by Jrue's helplessness against Jimmy Butler they went for the trade. Imo though, the most questionable move was firing Budenholzer, its like firing Pop. Yeah sure you get dame, but comparing it to the Spurs, Tony Parker wasn't a great defender either. Budenholzer would've made some adjustments to compensate for Dame's lack of defense, after all his system complements Dame's skills.

Haliburton is the best PG in the east, and he proves that almost every match. I mean, guy himself is the system and that's why Pacers have by far the best offense in the league, both statistically and by the eye test. They are one trade away (not the big one) to be solid top 4 team in the East.

No he doesn’t. It’s that Adrian Griffin isn’t playing dame correctly, and it doesn’t allow him to get a steady rhythm offensively. And the bucks bench needs to not score 9 points so that when dame and Giannis come in they feel a huge burden to make a comeback, always.

Current Bucks are never about defense. They gamble on attacking with Giannis inside and Dame outside. They sold away all of their defenders from Bud's system.

Everything you said was right. Indiana might actually win against them in the playoffs but I think it would be close. The pace wont be this fast and players will try harder on defense. So i think the bucks will be fine they just need a few roster upgrades
The gameplay is simple. Attack the side without Giannis and force them to rotate a mismatch if they even rotate in time. 😂
I loved dame and am a blazers fan. I gotta say I’m not surprised here, dames defense has been disinterested at best and absolutely shit at worst. I love the man’s offense but he’s a problem on D and was a big reason why the blazers couldn’t get past WCF

Heat Check's mistake here is thinking that you can watch regular season footage and how teams perform and think it applies to the playoffs. Teams completely change schemes in playoffs, waiting until then so other teams don't have it on camera. Also the Bucks are being lazy on defense you can see it watching. Most likely cuz their offense is so good they win almost every game anyway. Also, important to understand the Bucks may not play Pacers in playoffs. Pacers could easily get knocked out by 76ers or Celtics prior to getting a shot.

They gave up Grayson and their defense, sign Malik Beasley who is objectively a worse defender than Dame and the biggest part is simply Dame has played like garbage this year for the most part especially against good teams and his ppg only looks decent because of free throws.
