Great stuff Pete, I certanly grooved along!
Thanks dude! :)
01:08 That riff man...Wow.
Only 30 seconds into the song I had to frantically hit the Like button. Pete is the king of riffs!
pretty impressive for a little amp.
Just discovered an awesome trick to make this amp sound phenomenal The Micro Dark is a really bassy and, well, dark, sounding amp with pretty much no presence, so what I do to tame the beast that is the low end on this amp is I stack overdrives. The first pedal I have in the chain is an EHX soul food Klone pedal. I have treble set to 2 oclock, drive set to 10oclock, and volume between 8 and 10 depending on the output of the pickups. This then goes into a tube screamer. The settings on the tube screamer are gain pretty much off, tone at 2:30, and volume at 1 oclock. Then this goes into the micro dark, which has the shape knob at about 1 oclock, and the gain at about 2 oclock. The Soul Food adds in a biting treble, and the Tube Screamer punches the midrange and adds presence with the tone knob cranked. The resulting sound is a night and day difference between the bassy, muffled sound of the micro dark, and the tight, present, aggressive sound with the two pedals. It seriously sounds awesome. I found it was still too bassy even after adding a tube screamer, so adding 2 drive pedals really helped. The last thing I'm considering doing to it is adding a tung sol tube, which is brighter sounding than the stock JJ tube (which is a good sounding tube in the right amp, just not this one.) That should help even more. Just thought I'd share this trick for anyone struggling to get a good tight sound with their micro dark!
I managed to tighten up the bass really well with just the Boss SD-1 into the amp, cranking both the tone and level knobs while having the gain at 0.
Just use an EQ pedal 🤷♂️
Crazy sound and crazy little amp :)
I almost always cry when I see a new video in my sub box.
its so small and cute and i want to get one and put googly eyes on it
+spacefucker Lol. Emergency googley eyes ha ha :)
James, is that you?
Thats what she said!
One of the riffs had a solid Slipknotesque harmonised chord slide vibe. I approve (Y)
+kaioken1110 was definitely going for a Slipknot vibe with this one :)
0:48 - 1:25 is awesome :D
this song is such a banger man, keep it up!Great sounding amp too
+Paul Hatzig Thanks! :)
I was unable of growing a beard for 24 years, but after listening to this I had to shave twice in the span of 10 minutes.
Thank you Pete for helping my beard find its way out with your riffs!
Brutal, made my week!you always come thru.
best demo I've seen for this amp. thank you!
Once again impressed. damn. I love the style your songs have
Sounds sick! Gotta get my hands on one of these.
awesome as always your riffs r really groove heavy
What a riff machine! Listening to him for the first time. Loved it. Great tone as well
soo cool!! Congrats man.
Excellent riff good sir. You really knocked this one out of the park! I give you much praise.
RIFFS!
Awesome job :)
killer song and playing, man!
Thanks! :)
Nasty stuff Pete, keep it up!
Great video Pete (as always). I really liked the sound but was a tad surprised that even with the tube screamer in front of it, the sound was still as dark as it was. Awesome riffs and a sweet demo!
Sounds amazing. Good job pete. keep it up 👊👍
Thanks! :)
I love my Micro Dark! I run a Soul Food in front and a 6 band eq in the loop. Gets loud and metal af! \m/
EQ in the loop makes a world of difference!
I have one of these and I'm sure anyone who has one will back me up in saying it is RIDICULOUSLY loud for such a small amp. Runs my 4x12 Schecter Depth Charge cabinet with no issues and fills my room and it barely touches the first notch on the volume dial. Well worth it for the price and you can run it straight into an interface to record.
I bought it is a joke one day. Plugged it in to my peavey 2x12 cab with dual greenbacks, cranked the volume to 5 and nearly blew my goddamned ear drums out. This thing is an absolute monster!
Yup this little amp is LOUD AF! looks are definitely deceiving lol
Shook the windows of my room. Thought they were gonna blow out.
Monster playing, monster tune - as usual. Thanks Pete.
Now about this 1 video a week thing....:)
Working on it ha ha! I will get there :)
Jesus christ. Your riffs are so fucking good. I don't come for reviews or anything. Except these god-like riffs. These move me.
Amazing video production, as always :D
Thanks! :)
Omg that was an outstanding song, sick riffs
Thanks! :)
Someone's been listening to Slipknot!
Fantastic demo, man.
I’m getting one of these very soon, fittingly enough with the TS-808 Mini like in the video after playing in a guitar store with that combo (I really liked how the TS helped wih the lack of treble there as well as tightening it up well).
i subbed to you like 5 hours ago and i already know that it was a nice decision
Thanks for watching and the Sub! :)
amazing work again. Thumbs up
Dude that song was awesome. The Wah and the solo were very well done.
Thanks! :)
These riffs are fucking sick.
dude! such tight riffage & solo!
great writing & thanks for le video :)
Great! I saw you've mixed Robs last video. Really really good!
Great tone !.. and playing.
Thanks! :)
Pete I am so glad that Jared featured you in his channel, because I didn't know you before! You're a great, hilarious guy and incredible guitar player! Love the video and it's just freakin unreal that you managed to sound this micro terror like a sonic supernova :D
That's some sweet metal groove, thanks!!
+Matthew McDonald Thanks for watching! :)
Dude this is the demo I needed of this thing. It sounds a lot like Jim. Probably cuz of your killer fingers.
Thanks! It’s also cos I boosted the amp with a Tube Screamer :)
@@peteplaysmusic I think I'm gonna buy this amp. I have a mini pedal board and a Harley Benton 2x12. Been getting back into the knot recently. Gotta scratch itch ya know!
Sounds sick dude!
👍👍👍👍 worth the wait. sick track!
Thanks! :)
Great video dude!
Thanks! :)
Yeah. Those things are great! I came into a music store to try out a few pedals, and ended up trying the Micro dark with a TS Mini (probably the best TS out there [for those that don’t know, it’s the 808 circut uses in the $200 version with true bypass]) through a Marshall 1960’s lead reissue 4x12, and it’s honestly an incredible combination! I’m planning on getting those in a few months (probably longer for the 4x12, but my 1x12 is good for now). Nice video!
Once again you play a killer guitar good job man.
I always injoy watching you play. Your a awesome guitar player.
😆👍
Thanks for watching! :)
Nice riffs !
Thanks! :)
Sounds Like a mix s
of slipknot, disturbed, drowningpool and carajo ( Argentinian nice band, you should check it out)
+Nacho Akd aguante Carajo
+Nacho Akd it kind of reminds me of Degradead
and definetally Lamb of God
Yeah maybe
??? Really? He is the brain of the band, his only problem is that he is so fucking shy that he avoids using solos, or being the protagonist. But technically he is fucking awesome. Hablás argentino? jajajaj
sounds fucking awesome bro !!! good job \m/
Thanks! :)
That was sick dude :)
Thanks! :)
I usually came here to get an idea of the orange micro dark, but after 10 seconds I just watched the whole video because of that highly brutal heavy song and not for the amp. Awesome riffing man, the sound is also outstanding too! Shred on!
isn't pete one of the best riff writers out there?
+Erick Øsøriø He has some monster riffs. I think he keeps 'em under his beanie.
TheLightweaver777 he must have a BIG beanie to fit the sweep picking in.....
it sounds epic
1:07 that riff... holy shit! Groovy as fuck! Great job dude! Love your videos! \m/
+Rui Meirelles Thanks for watching! :)
Thank you so much for this! I've been looking for a good metal demo of this amp. I was thinking about getting one of these or saving for the mini 6505
I'd save for the 6505 MH, awesome amp! :)
awesome dude
Thanks! ;)
Definitely a badass head, even with the small 1x8" speaker cab. 20 watts, so can be used 'safely' in home at lower levels, but have already had numerous complains from neighbors living in a single family home. Will rattle the windows! Only way to play metal!
Behold, the riff master !!
Nice stuff, man! The first demo of the Micro Dark that has actively piqued my interest - may have to go try one out...
Thanks for the video, Pete! I can really dig those bottoms, maybe it's cuz I really like death metal :) \m/
Brutal is the only word to describe this video.
+A. Miller Thanks! :)
Fn sick!!! I through up everywhere
I’m going to pick one of these up for a new project. From everything I hear and read about this, it should be loud enough and thank you, Pete, for finally playing some killer tones out of it. I’m going to fully embrace the Orange tone and crank this thing. With a couple of pedals, this really looks like it would hold it’s own in a 3 piece. The Beatles toured with AC15s when they started. Theoretically, 20 watts is LOUD. The MicroDark and a 7 band EQ into a 4x12 may just become my new rig.
That guitar is Insane!!
Thanks! Ibanez Apex 1, It's the Munky from Korn Signature. I think it's discontinued but you can still find them on Ebay :)
that's a real thrash hand, man!
Downpicking! :)
This tune can be Thrash,Death,Hardcore anytime. Just fucking great pete!
Thanks! :)
I got one of these little guys and holy hell does it sound heavy even at low volumes.
Man u rock hard!!!
+Andre Vieira Thanks! :)
nice
woowwww,,,,I love that riff man,,,,
blowing my mind,,yeeaaaahhh
No complaints here, that is a hell of a tone.
These things are crazy awesome. I work at Guitar Cebnter, and we hook them up to Marshal 4x12's and people don't believe us when we tell them what we are playing though.
Good Job :)
Thanks! :)
You are simply a genius, a monster. FUCK*NG KILLERS RIFFS LIKE NO ONE ELSE. When i listen to this i want to break my house hahahahaha.
Shit yeah man bad ass riffs..
+David Waelder Didn't expect to see you here, I bet you could make a bitchin guitar for this dude.
You ever think about building a guitar ?
Big fan of you work.
+Jay Ward yes!! As soon as I get some bread and time.
+David Waelder bread, what ?
+Jay Ward money
Thanks! :)
Good to hear this in a metal mix. I thought it sounded pretty muddy and not that great on its own, but yeah, a Tube Screamer (or a clone) in front of it really brings out the awesomeness of this amp.
+Travis Lausch Yep, this little amp is honestly the best Orange I've tried, I quite like it. Thanks for watching! :)
I've only had the pleasure of trying two, myself: this and the Crush 15R, both of which I own. Clearly, the Micro Dark outperforms the 15R in almost every conceivable way, except for the lack of a clean channel and reverb, but then it still has a pretty damn nice effects loop.
So, question: I'm pretty new to hooking up amps to recording devices, but I'm assuming the Torpedo Live just connects to your standard sort of USB interface and probably has cabinet impulses built in? I tried a recording with the cab-sim headphone out but it's a bit harsh and unusable in a mix on its own without some serious editing. Is it more worth getting a Torpedo Live for home recording with a Micro Dark, or do you figure I'd get similar results to this running it through a cab with 12" speakers, with an SM57 in front of it? Obviously, the latter option is cheaper, but I'm curious as to what the benefits of using a load box/speaker simulator unit like the Torpedo Live are.
That riff at 1:08 is so sick. Reminds me of Opeth.
Thanks! :)
Once again, really, really awesome :) Anything that really stood out to you pro or con wise?
Holy shit dude, this is awesome. Can you tell me if it's really worth getting Torpedo Live or its better to get Torpedo C.A.B. for home recording? Also how much of EQ and other mastering you did to the guitar tracks? I really wanna improve sound for my videos and I wonder if I could nail it with this stuff. Thank you in advance for your answer
Fucking badass man!!!!!
Thanks! :)
Awesome track man! I have my own Micro Dark and I love it! Do you have any recommendations for settings/pedals to use with it to get a more thrash metal tone?
+Dennis Plotnik I have a few advice. I use a normal Dark Terror 15W with 2x12 Celestion V30 cab. Orange amps have many midi frequencies. In this case for 80s thrash metal (that have very midi freq.) use a normal distortion pedal for more "metal" distortion. For a modern thrash metal (with more low freq.) i recommend, in addition to the distortion pedal, to use a Eq pedal for reduce a little bit the midi freq.
Hi Dennis, yeah I found the best tone with the tone knob at around 2 o'clock and the Gain at 3 o'clock. I found the volume control added a lot of mids after around 10 o'clock, and didn't really function as a volume beyond that point. I just used a Tube Screamer Mini to boost it also :)
Hi Pete, I'm curious to know how you chain the torpedo live to the amp..
!? Did you use the headphone connection of the orange amp?
If you did, I think you couldn't turn off the amp simulator cabinet for another one... it might be two cabinets in your chain..!?
I'm asking because I'm interested. I would like buying the orange amp , for plug and play and recording without an external mic..
Thanks
Great song, great riffs and great tone! That little sucker sounds great. Is this an amp you recommend? I have watched a lot of videos and this is the first one that is convincing me to make the purchase.
+adamgarrow I'd basically describe this amp as a classic Orange Amp. It can do modern metal stuff but it doesn't excel at it. Without a boost in front it can get quite boomy and the high end is fizzy. It's quite hard to dial in especially if you like to down tune. It does like the mids though and like all Orange Amps, it likes to be played loud. Not sure if that answers your question but hope that helps. There's also a Playthrough linked in the description to a version with just guitar and no backing track so you can hear everything better :)
Pete Cottrell awesome. thanks for the I fo. I bit the bullet and ordered one. it will be here tomorrow. once I fire it up I guess I will find out lol. thanks for the reply and great work man. love your playing.
@@adamgarrow ik this was four years ago but how did you end up liking it?
Please plug a horizon presicion drive through the micro dark!?!
Sounds like a combination of Amon Amarth and Killswitch Engage. Awesome!
Do you still have this amp?
Wondering if you could do a full demo of it's versatility.
It would probably sound good with something in E or Eb standard, but I wouldn't go much lower. In drop A, it sounds really muffled and not good. Great playing as always, with a gut busting solo. Keep doing your thing \m/
Thanks! :)
Hi, Pete! Great video... as always!
My new album out in March. You are really important for my work... with inspiration and recording notions. So, can I put your name in the album's credits and in a dedicated video as thank you for this?
Warm regards and... good morning, i think! (I'm writing from Italy ahahah)
Hey dude is it recorded on micro dark + orange 20w cabinet? If it is so then this is one of the most impressive sound I've ever heard. Please answer me.
I don't think so since the 20w cab only has an 8 inch speaker and they normally sound kinda thin. But if you want to get something small like the 20w cab get a 1x12 cab
reminds me of feared
What are the amp settings on this? I have one of these, but it sounds really muffled and bad. I'm not good at getting good tones.
I put a GT 12AX7 in mine and threw a TS808 in front of it. Now it sounds HUGE. Also playing through a Peavey 4x12 but have played it through a 2x12 with similar results.
wow, this sounds so cool, now u made me be confused, do u recomend the 6505 or the dark terror??
+alejandro guardado 6505 every time for me :)
+Pete Cottrell thanks mate! just for knowing, do u have the 6505+ or the normal 6505?
+alejandro guardado I have the 6505 MH mini head, it stands up pretty well to its big brothers though. I don't think there is much of tonal difference between the 6505 and the 6505+, just that the + version has a separate clean channel :)
+Pete Cottrell ok, thanks again mate! and great job as always ;)
slipknot it up!!
is it just me or is the guitar in this video missing some high freqs. The guitar sound somewhat dull to me. it almost sounds like you turned off your tone knob or something. (I am listining through krk rp5 for reference)
+Funzgunz fingerhappy Listening back, you do have a point. The high end EQing I did on the Guitar buss was similar to any other guitar or amp. So my theory with this is that it's a combination of the small amp (designed for a small 8 inch Cab) and the Dimarzio Pickups which are not my cup of tea and will be replaced soon. Thanks for watching! :)
+Pete Cottrell Yeah thank you for making videos. i really enjoy them and i learn a lot from them. the tone itself is actually really good i think . but from experience i know bad pickups can really fuck up your tone. I bought a cheap jackson js22 last year wich had the most shitty pickups ever in it. and whatever i tryed to do. the tone always keeped sounding like garbage. Eventually i thought to myself: ''maybe I should change guitar, see if that makes a difference'' and that was actually the problem. Espescially these days with Bias fx, Guitar rig, etc, where tones just sound very good and realistic. The problem of your tone is mainly going to be your pickups or the eq settings.
Les drums in the mix pls it’s a amp demo.. I wanna hear more of the amp 😭
What would you say is the best bedroom setup with headphone usage?
A Micro Dark Terror standalone with a direct headphone output. Or getting an interface and using BIAS into a laptop?
ArcticPanda the headphone port in the micro dark is rubbish. bias is definitely a much more viable option. joey sturgis' tone forge is also very good
Yeah, think I've decided to get an interface and go with BIAS. At least then I can record as well, without micing up etc.
ArcticPanda well you can record real amps through a computer. it's actually what Pete used for this video. It's a loadbox with simulated cabs, called the Two Notes Torpedo Live. Glenn Fricker and Rabea have done some good videos, if you wanted to know more about it. It is $1000, however it is well worth the money in my opinion. I currently use BIAS Amp and FX for demos, but if you wanted to get serious about recording I'd definitly consider the Torpedo Live. The sims sound phenomenal, and you'd still be using a real amp.
Seems like a very expensive option for some casual recording, when you can get a good interface for £100 and be sorted.
ArcticPanda oh no, you're absolutely, right. i mean if you decided that you want to do a professional recording, but don't want to mic up a big cab.
Drop A?
+Jurmu Yes :)
+Jurmu Drop Ayyyyy LMAO
So, anybody know what model Ibanez that is? Is it some sort of premium RG7? Doesn't look like Iron Label to me. It looks (and sounds) great and I want one. And I want an Orange amp, too.
It's an Ibanez Apex 1, it's the Munky Signature model from 2009 :)
I just bought one of these! Still waiting on shipping. Your video is the only one that does the amp justice, by the way. Still trying to earn the money for the 7 string. Thanks.
