- 'Inside Out Outside In, Stories from O'Devaney Gardens', is a 40 minute documentary about life and change in O'Devaney Gardens in Dublin's North West Inner City. With the hepl of local people , the film tells the storyof the area from when it was built in the early 1950s Many original tenants came from the Dominick Street area and many more have close ties with the suburb of Cabra. The film was made for the O'Devaney Gardens Community Development Forum in the context of a proposed redevelopment of the area. The Community Development Forum editorial group included Lena Jordan, Fidelma Bonas and Daniel St Ledger.
Great job on the documentary, Joe. 'It's not where you are brought up, it's how you were brought up'. Brilliant.
That'd be true if not for the fact that if you were brought up right you'd start cleaning your own front yard.
The fact that the people there are even saying that shows that they're justifying bad behaviour and lifestyles.
As a Dublin northsider, this video brought tears to my eye, Great job.
I was brought up in Arbour Hill beside The Gardens during the late 70 to the mid 80s, never had a spot of bother with the residents. We all played games with each other and had great Craic. great place to grow up.
Thank-you pal
when I first moved to mckee park I drank in the city arms and a lot of o devaney people drank in it, They made me very welcome especially yank I live in uk now
And try to get to the arms when ever i'm over merry xmas to you all from mick mc manus

Hi Joe, would you by any chance have or know where I could get a copy of a video you made with an Anco gorup doing a communitions Course based in ther NIHE (DCU today) and St Pappans Hall in Ballymun in around 1984/85? The guy who was running the course was called Brain (Barney) and Denis Kennedy although on the course was his right hand man, Olie McGlinchy came in later. I would love to get a copy but cannot find anyone who has one. Part of the video is shown at the very start of a video shown on RTE (I think) called the 4th Act. Thanks Joe for all the great videos.
From flats and when I lived beside the place and never suffered so much vandalism and robbery
The young man in the video, Mark Noonan, was shot dead in 2010. Very sad.

Sheriff Street Flats make an apperance at 9:39 🤔
Me dads is one of the O’Neills
I was born in no.99 O'Devaney Gdns. Clifford ring any bells?
I was 154, long balconys
We called yours the end block of the ‘luxuries.’ 😂
For the people in the general area the building of O'Devaney Gdns was a disaster. An increase in crime, house break in's in particular, vandalism and general anti social behaviour.
What area is it phibsboro?
@@brianfitzpatrick9949
Not Phibsboro.
The complex was off the the Phoenix Park end of Nth Circ Rd.
Yeah. When you have a load of people together like that you get narcissistic sociopaths who start manipulating others and causing mischief.
Worse is when most people don't know about narcs , they are considered one of the gang because everyone in the flats sticks together.
Very gangy which is no good!
Odg for live
Anyone remember Norah Jones?
So much snobery in Ireland and Dublin great foreign buyers are taken they have to be stopped not the Dublin I was born in phisboro.i was happy till. Things went wrong mother dying ruined all my life
Honestly, it's a kip.
Jesus if Ireland didn't welcome every other nation into the country we would all have a great place to live , when you walk around Dublin now you would hardly here a Dublin accent only in certain area's, what a shame!.
paul leonard its exactly the same here in England more foreigners than British here in Manchester these days!
BrexitCub 38 how can we do something about it, I will never will never be the same again, but there must be a way to do something before it's to late..?
paul leonard lads it only takes one generation for all the eastern european, africans and asians here to sound like dubs. Its happening already trust me
@@1989Chrisc Dubs and Africans are the same type of people really
@@1989Chrisc they don't belong there.,and it's mostly gays who bring them in.
How about power its your land not govern themselves
We need selective breeding.
why would ye's deserve a home? What contribution have you made to the State? What taxes have you paid?
everybody deserves a home ya knobjockey
not when they willfully wreck it they don't. Ye can't look after your own patch then you're no better than the knackers
@@jay1932 No one deserves a home, go out and earn one!!
All of those people speaking in that video were workers who paid their taxes.
You're assuming people who live in flats don't work, but you're wrong.
The majority of those who caused trouble and vandalised the complex weren't from O'Devaney.
@@bernicewade9796 Would you stop. If they weren't from O'Devaney, they why did crime in the area plummet when they tore O'Devaney. down?
all the bulmers ha ha ha
Rose coloured nonsense, the crime rate on Oxmantown road plummeted when the flats were emptied, and the prices of the houses in the area went up by €100k. They used to stone the bus that travelled through the flats and it was regularly cancelled. There were so many young mothers in the flats but very few (involved) Dads. Good riddance to it (ask any of the neighbours).
great video..very instructional...but. man....had a hard time understanding what they were saying.....HEAVY accent.......
